Works of Hesiod and the Homeric Hymns

Works [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Works of Hesiod and the Homeric Hymns by Hesiod Book Resume:

Winner of the 2005 Harold Morton Landon Translation Award from the Academy of American Poets. In Works of Hesiod and the Homeric Hymns, highly acclaimed poet and translator Daryl Hine brings to life the words of Hesiod and the world of Archaic Greece. While most available versions of these early Greek writings are rendered in prose, Hine's illuminating translations represent these early classics as they originally appeared, in verse. Since prose was not invented as a literary medium until well after Hesiod's time, presenting these works as poems more closely approximates not only the mechanics but also the melody of the originals. This volume includes Hesiod's Works and Days and Theogony, two of the oldest non-Homeric poems to survive from antiquity. Works and Days is in part a farmer's almanac—filled with cautionary tales and advice for managing harvests and maintaining a good work ethic—and Theogony is the earliest comprehensive account of classical mythology—including the names and genealogies of the gods (and giants and monsters) of Olympus, the sea, and the underworld. Hine brings out Hesiod's unmistakable personality; Hesiod's tales of his escapades and his gritty and persuasive voice not only give us a sense of the author's own character but also offer up a rare glimpse of the everyday life of ordinary people in the eighth century BCE. In contrast, the Homeric Hymns are more distant in that they depict aristocratic life in a polished tone that reveals nothing of the narrators' personalities. These hymns (so named because they address the deities in short invocations at the beginning and end of each) are some of the earliest examples of epyllia, or short stories in the epic manner in Greek. This volume unites Hine's skillful translations of the Works of Hesiod and the Homeric Hymns—along with Hine's rendering of the mock-Homeric epic The Battle of the Frogs and the Mice—in a stunning pairing of these masterful classics.

Works Councils

Works [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Works Councils by Joel Rogers,Wolfgang Streeck Book Resume:

As the influence of labor unions declines in many industrialized nations, particularly the United States, the influence of workers has decreased. Because of the need for greater involvement of workers in changing production systems, as well as frustration with existing structures of workplace regulation, the search has begun for new ways of providing a voice for workers outside the traditional collective bargaining relationship. Works councils—institutionalized bodies for representative communication between an employer and employees in a single workplace—are rare in the Anglo-American world, but are well-established in other industrialized countries. The contributors to this volume survey the history, structure, and functions of works councils in the Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, Sweden, Italy, Poland, Canada, and the United States. Special attention is paid to the relations between works councils and unions and collective bargaining, works councils and management, and the role and interest of governments in works councils. On the basis of extensive comparative data from other Western countries, the book demonstrates powerfully that well-designed works councils may be more effective than labor unions at solving management-labor problems.

Sorry Works!

Works [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Sorry Works! by Doug Wojcieszak,James W. Saxton,Maggie M. Finkelstein Book Resume:

This book is, in part, adapted from speeches I have given to medical, insurance, and legal organizations across the United States and in Australia and Canada over the last two years. Liability exposure has been a major issue for healthcare and insurance professionals for a long time, and they are looking for new solutions to an old problem. More and more doctors, nurses, risk managers, hospital administrators, and insurance executives are turning to Sorry Works! for answers. I thought it was time to put Sorry Works! in a book that was concise and to the point. Along the way I met and had the pleasure of working with James Saxton and his team at the law firm of Stevens & Lee. It was fascinating to me how as lawyers and health law consultants they were spreading the same message. To make sure this message was well grounded in law and risk management principles, we collaborated, and this book is part of that partnership. This book adequately covers the topic of disclosure and apology but has intentionally been kept short so even the busiest professional could read it on a plane ride or over a weekend. Though Sorry Works! has its roots in medicine, it is my hope that this book finds a wider audience in corporations, the small business community, and other sectors of our society that are concerned about litigation. I also hope the book appears in college course syllabi so future doctors, lawyers, and business people can read, discuss, and debate it. Indeed, if Sorry Works! can work in medical malpractice (often thought to be one of the most contentious and expensive litigation arenas) imagine what it can do elsewhere! Moreover, though Sorry Works! is a process and program, it also a way oflife universal to all people. Indeed, Sorry Works! returns us to our parents' lessons about apology and fixing mistakes. People can actually live with mistakes, but they do not accept or tolerate cover-ups. Sorry Works! taps into this psyche and, in doing so, provides a simple yet devastatingly effective way to reduce litigation and associated expenses while improving outcomes and safety, which further decreases litigation exposure. The keys are honesty, candor, and a real commitment to fix problems when something goes wrong. All three elements must be present to prevent conflict, and Sorry Works! shows you how to do it.

The Major Works

Works [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Major Works by Francis Bacon Book Resume:

This authoritative edition was originally published in the acclaimed Oxford Authors series under the general editorship of Frank Kermode. It brings together an extensive collection of Bacon's writing - the major prose in full, together with sixteen other pieces not otherwise available - togive the essence of his work and thinking.Although he had a distinguished career as a lawyer and statesman, Francis Bacon's lifelong goal was to improve and extend human knowledge. In The Advancement of Learning (1605) he made a brilliant critique of the deficiencies of previous systems of thought and proposed improvements to knowledge inevery area of human life. He conceived the Essays (1597, much enlarged in 1625) as a study of the formative influences on human behaviour, psychological and social. In The New Atlantis (1626) he outlined his plan for a scientific research institute in the form of a Utopian fable. In addition tothese major English works this edition includes 'Of Tribute', an important early work here printed complete for the first time, and a revealing selection of his legal and political writings, together with his poetry.A special feature of the edition is its extensive annotation which identifies Bacon's sources and allusions, and glosses his vocabulary.

Mystical and Mythological Explanatory Works of Assyrian and Babylonian Scholars

Works [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Mystical and Mythological Explanatory Works of Assyrian and Babylonian Scholars by Alasdair Livingstone Book Resume:

The cuneiform literature of ancient Mesopotamia is vast, ranging from economic texts, other sorts of record-keeping documents, and letters through texts that modern readers consider literary, including one category that is often considered esoteric. The latter works appear to be attempts on the part of the ancient scribe-scholars to explain parts of their own culture, to elucidate their own traditions. In the mid-1980s, Alasdair Livingstone studied these texts and then published the collection he had gathered. These texts demonstrate that the Assyrian and Babylonian scholars responsible for their creation had their own distinctive ideas about the function of myth and ritual. Livingstone's study was first published in 1986 by Oxford University Press but has been out of print for a number of years. Eisenbrauns is happy to make it available once again, in a quality hardback reprint.

Educational Research: Why 'What Works' Doesn't Work

Works [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Educational Research: Why 'What Works' Doesn't Work by Paul Smeyers,Marc Depaepe Book Resume:

In this book distinguished philosophers and historians of education from six countries focus on the problematical nature of the search for ‘what works’ in educational contexts, in practice as well as in theory. Beginning with specific problems, they move on to more general and theoretical considerations, seeking to go beyond simplistic notions of cause and effect and the rhetoric of performativity that currently grips educational thinking.

The Later Works, 1925-1953: 1939-1941

Works [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Later Works, 1925-1953: 1939-1941 by John Dewey Book Resume:

John Dewey's Experience and Nature has been considered the fullest expression of his mature philosophy since its eagerly awaited publication in 1925. Irwin Edman wrote at that time that "with monumental care, detail and completeness, Professor Dewey has in this volume revealed the metaphysical heart that beats its unvarying alert tempo through all his writings, whatever their explicit themes." In his introduction to this volume, Sidney Hook points out that "Dewey's Experience and Nature is both the most suggestive and most difficult of his writings." The meticulously edited text published here as the first volume in the series The Later Works of John Dewey, 1925-1953 spans that entire period in Dewey's thought by including two important and previously unpublished documents from the book's history: Dewey's unfinished new introduction written between 1947 and 1949, edited by the late Joseph Ratner, and Dewey's unedited final draft of that introduction written the year before his death. In the intervening years Dewey realized the impossibility of making his use of the word 'experience' understood. He wrote in his 1951 draft for a new introduction: "Were I to write (or rewrite) Experience and Nature today I would entitle the book Culture and Nature and the treatment of specific subject-matters would be correspondingly modified. I would abandon the term 'experience' because of my growing realization that the historical obstacles which prevented understanding of my use of 'experience' are, for all practical purposes, insurmountable. I would substitute the term 'culture' because with its meanings as now firmly established it can fully and freely carry my philosophy of experience."

What Works in Corrections

Works [Pdf/ePub] eBook

What Works in Corrections by Doris Layton MacKenzie Book Resume:

What Works in Corrections, first published in 2006, examines the impact of correctional interventions, management policies, treatment and rehabilitation programs on the recidivism of offenders and delinquents. The book reviews different strategies for reducing recidivism and describes how the evidence for effectiveness is assessed. Thousands of studies were examined in order to identify those of sufficient scientific rigor to enable conclusions to be drawn about the impact of various interventions, policies and programs on recidivism. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses were performed to further examine these results. This book assesses the relative effectiveness of rehabilitation programs (e.g., education, life skills, employment, cognitive behavioral), treatment for different types of offenders (e.g. sex offenders, batterers, juveniles), management and treatment of drug-involved offenders (e.g., drug courts, therapeutic communities, outpatient drug treatment) and punishment, control and surveillance interventions (boot camps, intensive supervision, electronic monitoring). Through her extensive research, MacKenzie illustrates which of these programs are most effective and why.

A Practice that Works

Works [Pdf/ePub] eBook

A Practice that Works by Steven Michael Harris,David C. Ivey,Roy A. Bean Book Resume:

In the advent of managed care and the continuing decline in reimbursement felt across the various disciplines of mental health have had profound impacts upon the quality and quantity of care in the field. As it has become increasingly difficult for a practitioner in private practice to provide a satisfactory level of care while earning a living in the process, many clinicians have become more innovative in the services they offer their clients. This book pulls together a group of mental health professionals who have branched out into new markets and services. A Practice that Works represents an anthology of new knowledge in the field, as chapter contributors describe in revealing detail their own innovative techniques. After first describing the idea behind a strategy such as Wilderness Therapy Programs, the editors discuss the logistics of billing issues pertinent to the strategy and provide practical steps to its implementation, follow-through and development. Finally each chapter includes a 'testimonial' from the editors before considering issues such as any other implications of the strategy, how the strategy can fit into one's larger therapeutic model, and how this new way of thinking has impacted the author's life and practice. This timely book should appeal to professionals in all areas of the mental health fields, and is written in a general style that will not turn any of them away from the innovative lessons to be gleaned from such a unique compilation.
