The 1902 Classic This is a thoroughly enjoyable anthology on deer and hunting by numerous famous outdoor authors of the time, including then Vice-President Theodore Roosevelt. Unlike many vintage books on hunting, you'll find the tone and readability to be excellent, as well as being still very topical to hunters of the twenty-first century. Roosevelt is in true form as he discusses Mule-deer, Whitetail, Pronghorn Antelope, and Wapiti (Elk) in detail, and adds personal stories of his own experiences in the field. Hunting adventures of his youth and specific methods as the relate to each species as discussed at length. Next is Van Dyke's "Deer and Elk of the Pacific Coast" as fascinating and colorful treatise of hunting in California, Oregon and British Columbia around the turn of the century. The vivid descriptions of the area, environs and prey are especially well written in this addition. The Caribou and The Moose round out this excellent collection on the Deer family, with more information on each variety and species as it relates to hunting and sport. Both add interesting insights and anecdotes that will interest the sportsman. This must-have Anthology includes all of the following titles: The Deer and Antelope of North America - Theodore Roosevelt The Deer and Elk of the Pacific Coast - T.S. Van Dyke The Caribou - D.G. Elliot The Moose: Where it Lives and How it Lives - A.J. Stone

Buddhist Birth Stories: or, Jataka Tales, Vol ? 1 by V. Fausboll Book Resume:

It is well known that amongst theBuddhist Scriptures there is one book in which a large number of old stories, fables, and fairy tales, lie enshrined in an edifying commentary; and have thus been preserved for the study and amusement of later times. How this came about is not at present quite certain. The belief of orthodox Buddhists on the subject is this. The Buddha, as occasion arose, was accustomed throughout his long career to explain and comment on the events happening around him, by telling of similar events that had occurred in his own previous births. The experience, not of one lifetime only, but of many lives, was always present to his mind; and it was this experience he so often used to point a moral, or adorn a tale.

Mary Gaunt by Bronwen Hickman Book Resume:

This is a rare biography of the pioneering Australian author, Mary Gaunt. Born on the Victorian Goldfields in Chiltern in 1861, Mary was well-educated and well-connected. She was a tomboy and a rebel - her father encouraged her, her mother disapproved. One of the first female students to attend the University of Melbourne, she wrote articles and stories in order to fund her travels. She trekked through the great mahogany forests of West Africa. She went to China in the chaos that followed the downfall of the Ch'ing dynasty, and narrowly avoided the marauding White Wolf. She proved that a woman could live by her pen in that era. When war came, she was trapped behind enemy lines and never made it home to Australia.

Alone in West Africa by Mary Gaunt Book Resume:

Sometimes when people ask me with wonder why I went to West Africa, why I wanted to go, I feel as if that wife must have grown old and feeble and will bear no more men to send across the sea. I hope not. I trust not. More than ninety years ago she sent my mother’s father into the Honourable East India Co.‘s service, and then, in later years with his ten children to colonise Van Diemen’s Land. Nearly sixty years ago she sent my father, a slim young lad, out to the goldfields in Australia, and she breathed her spirit over the five boys and two girls who grew up in the new land. I cannot remember when any one of us would not have gone anywhere in the world at a moment’s notice. It would not have been any good pointing out the dangers, because dangers at a distance are only an incentive. There is something in the thought of danger that must be overcome, that you yourself can help to overcome, that quickens the blood and gives an added zest to life. I can remember as a small girl going with my sister to stay with an uncle who had a station, Mannerim, behind Geelong. The house had been built in the old days of slabs with a bark roof, very inflammable material. I loved the place then because it spoke of the strenuous old days of the Colony. I love the memory of it now for old times’ sake, and because there happened the first really exciting incident in my life. It was a January morning, the sky overcast with smoke and a furious hot wind blowing from the north. The men of the household looked out anxiously, but I sat and read a story-book. It was the tale of a boy named Carlo who was wrecked on the coast of West Africa—nice vague location; he climbed a cocoa-nut tree—I can see him now with a rope round his waist and his legs dangling in an impossible attitude—and he was taken by savages. His further adventures I do not know, because a man came riding in shouting that the calf paddock was on fire and everyone must turn out. Everyone did turn out except my aunt who stayed behind to prepare cool drinks, and those drinks my little sister and I, as being useless for beating out the flames, were sent to carry to the workers in jugs and “billies.”

The Grasmere and Alfoxden Journals by Dorothy Wordsworth Book Resume:

'I went & sat with W & walked backwards & forwards in the Orchard till dinner time - he read me his poem. I broiled Beefsteaks.' Dorothy Wordsworth's journals are a unique record of her life with her brother William, at the time when he was at the height of his poetic powers. Invaluable for the insight they give into the daily life of the poet and his friendship with Coleridge, they are also remarkable for their spontaneity and immediacy, and for the vivid descriptions of people, places, and incidents that inspired some of Wordsworth's best-loved poems. The Grasmere Journal was begun at Dove Cottage in May 1800 and kept for three years. Dorothy notes the walks and the weather, the friends, country neighbours and beggars on the roads; she sets down accounts of the garden, of Wordsworth's marriage, their concern for Coleridge, the composition of poetry. The earlier Alfoxden Journal was written during 1797-8, when the Wordsworths lived near Coleridge in Somerset .Not intended for publication, but to 'give Wm Pleasure by it', both journals have a quality recognized by Wordsworth when he wrote of Dorothy that 'she gave me eyes, she gave me ears'. This edition brings the reader closer to the hurried flow of Dorothy's writing and includes rich explanatory notes about the places and people described in the journals. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

EASTERN STORIES AND LEGENDS - 30 Childrens Stories from India by Anon E. Mouse Book Resume:

Herein are a collection of children’s stories from the East are a collection of Hindu and Buddhist tales, which are a marked change from our normal diet of Western folklore. In this volume you will find 30 children’s which have their roots in the life giving waters of the Brahmaputra and Ganges rivers of that magnificent range of mountains we know as the Himalayas. Here you will find stories like: The Banyan Deer The Pupil Who Taught His Teacher The Man Who Told A Lie The Crow That Thought It Knew The Judas Tree The River-Fish And The Money; and many, many more. You may be astonished to find that the ethics of these stories are identical with many of the Western standard fare: here we find condemnation of hypocrisy, cruelty, selfishness, and vice of every kind and a constant appeal to Love, Pity, Honesty, loftiness of purpose and breadth of vision. In a time when our awareness of nature and the threats it faces is ever more present, the Indian mind never has any hesitation in acknowledging its kinship with nature, its unbroken relation with all, which is perhaps the best summing up of the value of this collection. So sit back with a steamy beverage and be prepared to be entertained for many-an-hour with this collection of “fresh” tales and stories. If and when you come to pick up the story where you left it, don’t be surprised if you find a younger reader is now engrossed in the book and is reluctant to let it go. 10% of the net sale will be donated to charities by the publisher. ============== KEYWORDS/TAGS: Indian Jungle, Tales from Old India, fairy tales, folklore, myths, legends, children’s stories, childrens stories, bygone era, fairydom, ethereal, fairy land, classic stories, children’s bedtime stories, happy place, happiness, Hare, Run Away, Monkey And The Crocodile, Spirit, Live In A Tree, Not Afraid, Parrot, Fed, Parents, Man, Work, Give Alms, King, See, Truth, Bull, Demand, Fair Treatment, Gratitude, Horse. Oriental Mythology by Joseph Campbell Book Resume:

Explore the power of myth as it flowered in Asia In this second volume of The Masks of God — Joseph Campbell's major work of comparative mythology — the pre-emimenent mythologist looks at Asian mythology as it developed over the course of five thousand years into the distinctive religions of Egypt, Mesopotamia, India, China, and Japan. The Masks of God is a four-volume study of world religion and myth that stands as one of Joseph Campbell's masterworks. On completing it, he wrote: Its main result for me has been the confirmation of a thought I have long and faithfully entertained: of the unity of the race of man, not only in its biology, but also in its spiritual history, which has everywhere unfolded in the manner of a single symphony, with its themes announced, developed, amplified and turned about, distorted, reasserted, and today, in a grand fortissimo of all sections sounding together, irrestibly advancing to some kind of mighty climax, out of which the next great movement will emerge. This new digital edition, part of the Collected Works of Joseph Campbell series, includes over forty new illustrations. (Comparative Mythology: Ancient Egypt, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism)

Epic by Herbert F. Tucker Book Resume:

This book is the first to provide a connected history of epic poetry in Britain between the French Revolution and the First World War. Although epic is widely held to have been shouldered aside by the novel, if not invalidated in advance by modernity, in fact the genre was practised without interruption across the long nineteenth century by nearly every prominent Romantic and Victorian poet, and shoals of ambitious poetasters into the bargain. Poets kept the epic alive by revising its conventions to meet an overlapping series of changing realities: insurgent democracy, Napoleonic war, the rise of class consciousness and repeated reform of the franchise, challenges posed by scientific advance to religious belief and cherished notions of the human, the evolution of a postnationalist and eventually imperialist identity for Britain as the world's superpower. Each of these developments called on nineteenth-century epic to do what the genre had always done: affirm the unity of its sponsoring culture through a large utterance that both acknowledged the distinctive flowering of the modern and affirmed its rootedness in tradition. The best writers answered this call by figuring Britain's self-renewal and the genre's as versions of one another. In passing Herbert Tucker notices scores of mediocre congeners (and worse), so as to show where the challenge of a given decade fell and suggest what lay at stake. The background these lesser works provide throws into relief what the book stresses in extended discussions of several dozen major works: an unbroken history of daring experimentation in which circumspect, inventive, worried epoists engaged because the genre and the age alike demanded it.

The Numerical Discourses of the Buddha by Book Resume:

Like the River Ganges flowing down from the Himalayas, the entire Buddhist tradition flows down to us from the teachings and deeds of the historical Buddha, who lived and taught in India during the fifth century B.C.E. To ensure that his legacy would survive the ravages of time, his direct disciples compiled records of the Buddha's teachings soon after his passing. In the Theravada Buddhist tradition, which prevails in Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia, these records are regarded as the definitive "word of the Buddha." Preserved in Pali, an ancient Indian language closely related to the language that the Buddha spoke, this full compilation of texts is known as the Pali Canon. At the heart of the Buddha's teaching were the suttas (Sanskrit sutras), his discourses and dialogues. If we want to find out what the Buddha himself actually said, these are the most ancient sources available to us. The suttas were compiled into collections called "Nikayas," of which there are four, each organized according to a different principle. The Digha Nikaya consists of longer discourses; the Majjhima Nikaya of middle-length discourses; the Samyutta Nikaya of thematically connected discourses; and the Anguttara Nikaya of numerically patterned discourses. The present volume, which continues Wisdom's famous Teachings of the Buddha series, contains a full translation of the Anguttara Nikaya. The Anguttara arranges the Buddha's discourses in accordance with a numerical scheme intended to promote retention and easy comprehension. In an age when writing was still in its infancy, this proved to be the most effective way to ensure that the disciples could grasp and replicate the structure of a teaching.

This little book owes its origin to the fact that, with the exception of Professor Shairp's Sketch contained in the preface to the "Tour in Scotland," no biography or memoir of the subject of it has hitherto been written. Seeing what an important part Miss Wordsworth occupied in influencing the revival of English poetry at the close of the last century, this has frequently been to me a matter of surprise. To the best of my knowledge, she does not even occupy any place in the numerous sketches of famous women which have from time to time appeared. At the same time the references to her in the biographies of her brother and in the reviews of his works are many.

Forgotten Tales and Vanished Trails by Theodore Roosevelt Book Resume:

Forgotten Tales and Vanished Trails gathers together Roosevelt’s many writings on game hunting and the outdoors from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. Published in various magazines and excerpts from his other publications, this collection finally brings the best musings of a great sportsman into a single volume. These articles span topics from hunting typical game animals (buck, wildebeest, and the like) to the hunting of dangerous predators such as wolves and bears; others are tales told around a campfire, of marauding wolves and man-eating bears, or detailing the finer points of ranching. Some pieces span years, while others detail his shorter exploits across the country. A passionate advocate for the outdoors, Roosevelt’s writing is filled with fascinating insights into a world mostly now lost to civilization and commerce. Many of his comments on the precarious balance of the natural world are noted in this volume, and his chapters on conservation and the responsibility of hunters reflect his ever-present interest in preserving the environment for the benefit of generations to come. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for hunters and firearms enthusiasts. We publish books about shotguns, rifles, handguns, target shooting, gun collecting, self-defense, archery, ammunition, knives, gunsmithing, gun repair, and wilderness survival. We publish books on deer hunting, big game hunting, small game hunting, wing shooting, turkey hunting, deer stands, duck blinds, bowhunting, wing shooting, hunting dogs, and more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

The One Year Chronological Bible offers a fascinating way to read through the Bible in one year, in as little as fifteen minutes per day! Gain a better understanding of the order of biblical events and the historical context in which they unfolded. The entire Bible text—books, chapters, and even verses—is arranged in the order the events actually happened. Prophetic books are interwoven with the historical accounts they accompanied. Psalms follow the events about which they were written. Proverbs are placed in the time they were compiled. The life of Christ is woven into one moving story. And Paul’s letters to the young churches in the first century are integrated into the book of Acts. Transition statements help you understand why some Scripture portions appear where they do. You do not have to be a Bible historian to appreciate the fascinating new perspective waiting for you in The One Year Chronological Bible. It’s like reading some of your favorite passages for the very first time. This edition uses the popular New King James Version of the Bible.

The Weekly Torah Portion by David M. Morgan, PhD Book Resume:

Believe in not just the ancient Word, but the Living Word. Reading a parasha—a weekly passage of scripture—will help you understand how God’s words transcend time and speak to your life today down to exact details. Are you eager to hear God’s prophetic voice through the scriptures? A parasha is a passage of scripture that is read every Sabbath day in every Jewish synagogue across the world according to the schedule provided for the year. By reading a weekly parasha, readers can know what is being pronounced prophetically on that very day. This book provides the full year of parasha readings—the complete scriptures from the Torah (the Pentateuch, of the first five books of the Bible)—the same passages read in synagogues according to Jewish tradition. Scriptures are provided in the Modern English Version (MEV) translation and David Morgan, one of the translators of the MEV, provides an introduction that will explain the significance of the parashas and how to get the most from reading them in this format.

The 64 Sonnets by John Keats Book Resume:

John Keats is among the greatest English poets. (He himself imagined he would be counted so!) For some readers, his odes define the essence of poetry. We also discover in Keats a great composer of sonnets. Here, for the first time published in a separate edition, are all sixty-four sonnets, the first written when Keats was eighteen, the last just five years later. Reading these poems, you'll experience the wonder of Keats's growing poetic powers; you'll feel the "shock of recognition" when you come upon the great ones. Presented with an introduction by Edward Hirsch, and accompanying explanatory notes, the sonnets stand out as a triumph of their own. "Between 1814 and 1819, John Keats wrote sixty-four sonnets. He was eighteen years old when he composed his first sonnet; he was turning twenty-four when he completed his last one. He restlessly experimented with the fourteen-line form and used it to plunge into (and explore) his emotional depths. You can sit down and read these poems in a single night and have a complete Keatsian experience—he breathes close and offers himself to us; his presence is near. You can also read them throughout your adulthood and never really get to the bottom of them. These short, durable poems are filled with the mysteries of poetry. "In the sonnets, Keats conveys the range of his interests, his concerns, his attachments, his obsessions. Some are light and improvisatory, tossed off in fifteen minutes, a moment's thought. Some are polemics, or romantic period pieces; others are brooding testaments or compulsive outpourings, which seem to expand on the page. These sonnets are replete with a sensuous feeling for nature—'The poetry of earth is never dead'—that looks back to Wordsworth and forward to Frost. They also luxuriate in the spaces of imagination—'Much have I travell'd in the realms of gold'—and trigger the daydreaming capacities of the mind." —from the Introduction by Edward Hirsch
