Tiny Love by Larry Brown Book Resume:

"Larry Brown wrote the way the best singers sing: with honesty, grit, and the kind of raw emotion that stabs you right in the heart. He was a singular American treasure." —Tim McGraw A career-spanning collection, Tiny Love brings together for the first time the stories of Larry Brown’s previous collections along with those never before gathered. The self-taught Brown has long had a cult following, and this collection comes with an intimate and heartfelt appreciation by novelist Jonathan Miles. We see Brown's early forays into genre fiction and the horror story, then develop his fictional gaze closer to home, on the people and landscapes of Lafayette County, Mississippi. And what’s astonishing here is the odyssey these stories chart: Brown’s self-education as a writer and the incredible artistic journey he navigated from “Plant Growin’ Problems” to “A Roadside Resurrection.” This is the whole of Larry Brown, the arc laid bare, both an amazing story collection and the fullest portrait we’ll see of one of the South’s most singular artists.

That Tiny Life by Erin Frances Fisher Book Resume:

Finalist, Danuta Gleed Literary Award Finalist, Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, BC Book Prizes A 49th Shelf Book of the Year In settings that range from the old American West to pre-revolutionary France, from a present-day dig site in the high tablelands of South America to deep space, That Tiny Life is a wide-ranging and utterly original collection of short fiction and a novella that examines the idea of progress — humanity’s never-ending cycle of creation and destruction. In the award-winning story, “Valley Floor,” a surgeon performs an amputation in the open desert in the American West. In “Da Capo al Fine,” set in eighteenth-century France, the creator of the fortepiano designs another, more brutal instrument. And in “That Tiny Life,” the reader gets a glimpse into a future in which human resource extraction goes far beyond Earth. Each story is infused with impeccably researched detail that brings obscure and fascinating subject matter into bright relief, be it falconry, ancient funeral rites, or space exploration. The result is an amazing interplay of minute detail against the backdrop of huge themes, such as human expression and impact, our need for connection, the innate violence in nature, and the god-complex present in all acts of human creation. A highly accomplished, evocative, and wholly impressive work of short fiction, That Tiny Life introduces readers to a writer with limitless range and imagination.

The Tiny and the Fragmented

The Tiny and the Fragmented by S. Rebecca Martin,Stephanie M. Langin-Hooper Book Resume:

Miniature and fragmentary objects are both eye-catching and yet easily dismissed. Tiny scale entices users with visions of Lilliputian worlds. The ambiguity of fragments intrigues us, offering tactile reminders of reality's transience. Yet, the standard scholarly approach to such objects has been to see them as secondary, incomplete things, whose principal purpose was to refer to a complete and often life-size whole. The Tiny and the Fragmented offers a series of fresh perspectives on the familiar concepts of the tiny and the fragmented. Written by a prestigious group of internationally-acclaimed scholars, the volume presents a remarkable diversity of case studies that range from Neolithic Europe to pre-Colombian Honduras to the classical Mediterranean and ancient Near East. Each scholar takes a different approach to issues of miniaturization and fragmentation but is united in considering the little and broken things of the past as objects in their own right. Whether a life-size or whole thing is made in a scaled-down form, deliberately broken as part of its use, or only considered successful in the eyes of ancient users if it shows some signs of wear, it challenges our expectations of representation and wholeness, of what it means for a work of art to be "finished" and "affective." Overall, The Tiny and the Fragmented demands a reconsideration of the social and contextual nature of miniaturization, fragmentation, and incompleteness, making the case that it was because of, rather than in spite of, their small or partial state that these objects were valued parts of the personal and social worlds they inhabited.

Danielle Tiny and the Littles by Cullen Gwin Book Resume:

It was late at night; very, very late at night. But somehow little Danielle Tiny couldn't sleep. Slowly she climbed out of the milk duds box that served as her bed. She was careful not to disturb her brother, Aaron Tiny, who slept above her in an M&M box and her tiny twin sister Rachelle who slept nearby. Rachelle's bed was made from a peppermint candies box. Their mom and dad had made all their beds out of candy boxes so they would have sweet dreams every night, but tonight it wasn’t working. Danielle shivered in the dark. Something was different. She didn't know what it was, but she could feel it. Slowly she snuck out of the room. When she was in the hallway, suddenly she heard a loud noise. CRACK! It sounded like it was right next to her. Danielle froze in her tracks. Her fuzzy brown hair stood straight up on its ends, making her a whole one-quarter inch taller than her normal three inches. She was too scared to even run to her mom and dad's room. Then, as she listened further, she began to hear the rain pattering on the big people's roof far above her head. "Oh, it's just a rainstorm." Danielle said, laughing at herself. "I'm going up to the lookout place and watch it." The lookout place was a special place to the Tinys. A couple of years before, a small chunk of plaster had fallen off the outside of the building. Before the big people noticed the hole, the Tinys got up there and covered it over with a piece of glass. Once she was in the lookout place, Danielle scooted herself all the way over to the edge of the window seat and leaned against the glass. The older Tinys never let her get this close before. They always said that the glass might fall out and send her plunging hundreds and hundreds of inches to the pavement below, but Danielle didn't believe them. Suddenly the glass popped out of its slot and tumbled out the hole. Danielle waved her arms wildly, trying to keep her balance, but it was no good. She also fell out the hole! Find out what happens to Danielle when she falls out the hole and into the big people’s world. The Tinys are a family of very small people that live inside the walls of a big person’s apartment. In many ways Tinys are like littles, but they don’t have tails like littles do. There are four children in the Tiny family. Gabrielle (or Brie as she is better known) is the oldest. Then comes Aaron, the only boy. After Aaron are the twins, Danielle and Rachelle. They all live with their mother and father. Living nearby are their grandmother and their Aunti Karen, who they spend a lot of time with. The Tinys all live in the walls of an apartment that belongs to the Martin family. In the Martin Family there are the parents, June and Jerry, and their only child, Peter. They also have three cats! As you may know, cats love to chase things that are smaller than they are, and tinys are just the right size for a cat to chase. The cats will pounce on the tinys and bat them around. They may not mean to hurt the tinys, but they do. That’s why tinys don’t like cats. The Tinys work hard at making things work. They like to recycle things that the big people throw away. They also like parties, and good times, and spending time together. In many ways, Tinys are just like you and me, only smaller. Read about the adventures of the Tinies in this series.

The Big Tiny by Dee Williams Book Resume:

Dee Williams’s life changed in an instant, with a near-death experience in the aisle of her local grocery store. Diagnosed with a heart condition at age forty-one, she was all too suddenly reminded that life is short, time is precious, and she wanted to be spending hers with the people and things she truly loved. That included the beautiful sprawling house in the Pacific Northwest she had painstakingly restored—but, increasingly, it did not include the mortgage payments, constant repairs, and general time-suck of home ownership. A new sense of clarity began to take hold: Just what was all this stuff for? Multiple extra rooms, a kitchen stocked with rarely used appliances, were things that couldn’t compare with the financial freedom and the ultimate luxury—time—that would come with downsizing. Deciding to build an eighty-four-square-foot house—on her own, from the ground up—was just the beginning of building a new life. Williams can now list everything she owns on one sheet of paper, her monthly housekeeping bills amount to about eight dollars, and it takes her approximately ten minutes to clean the entire house. It’s left her with more time to spend with family and friends, and given her freedom to head out for adventure at a moment’s notice, or watch the clouds and sunset while drinking a beer on her (yes, tiny) front porch. The lessons Williams learned from her “aha” moment post-trauma apply to all of us, every day, regardless of whether or not we decide to discard all our worldly belongings. Part how-to, part personal memoir, The Big Tiny is an utterly seductive meditation on the benefits of slowing down, scaling back, and appreciating the truly important things in life.
