The Wolf And The Lamb [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Wolf and The Lamb by Rosy Cole Book Resume:

When Mary Cole, a butcher's daughter, caught the eye of Lord Berkeley, it was as flint to tinder. A forsworn bachelor, he was taken aback that she refused to be his mistress.Within weeks he'd brought her family to bankruptcy. When, still, she eluded him, he plotted to abduct her. Aided by his corrupt chaplain, Hupsman, the Earl duped his 'shepherdess' with fake nuptials.Tumbling to the truth, Mary became passionately committed to gaining her eldest son's birthright. With an astonishing grasp of pastoral economy, she repaired the Berkeley fortunes while a succession of children compounded her plight. The scandalous activities of Mary's estranged sisters had to be curtailed at the highest level before a legal knot was eventually tied.Upon Hupsman's death, the Earl and Countess conspired to 'find' the registry of the 'first marriage'. The upshot was a sensational trial in the House of Lords whose repercussions were to shake the foundations of the Berkeley dynasty for ever and imperil Mary's life.

The Sheep and The Goats, Second Book in the Berkeley Series

The Wolf And The Lamb [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Sheep and The Goats, Second Book in the Berkeley Series by Rosy Cole Book Resume:

When the Earl of Berkeley escapes death in a duel, defending his wife's honour, the outcome is not what his opponent intended. Prince Ernest, Duke of Cumberland, is a deadly foe. After the failed 1799 Pedigree Trial to prove their first marriage, the Berkeleys must adopt a new strategy to ensure the succession. Their wayward eldest son's courtesy title, Lord Dursley, is far from fixed. Whilst the Prince of Wales seeks favours in return for endorsement of her early status, the Countess finds herself caught up in the Delicate Investigation of Princess Caroline, the banished wife he wishes to divorce. One of his spies, Lady Charlotte Douglas, who grew up in Gloucester and knows Mary Cole's past, tells tales of a liaison at a time she vows she was married to the Earl. Lord Berkeley's tragic death means his widow must face the House of Lords Committee of Privileges alone. Royal promises are broken and allies melt away as the hearing wends its sensational course before Cumberland inflicts the coup de grâce.

Aesop's Fables

The Wolf And The Lamb [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Aesop's Fables by John Esten Keller Book Resume:

In 1489 Johan Hurus printed the first collection of fables in Spain, Lavida del Ysopetconsusfabulas hystoriadas. Illustrated with nearly 200 woodcuts, this work quickly became the most-read book in Spain, beloved of both children and adults. Reprinted many times in the next three centuries and carried to the New World, it brought to Spanish letters a cornucopia of Aesopic fables, oriental apologues, and folktales that were borrowed by such writers as Cervantes, Lope de Vega, and especially the fabulists Iriarte and Samaniego. John Keller and Clark Keating now present the first English translation of this important literary work. The Latin and German lineage of La vida was significant, for it placed Spain in the mainstream of European fable lore. The highly fictitious life of Aesop, the misshapen Greek slave who reached the highest social level, contributed to the development of medieval romance and the picaresque novel. The book is thus important to students of comparative literature, literary history, and the development of the Spanish language. Of equal value are the woodcuts, which depict the daily life of medieval Europe and contribute to a better understanding of fifteenth-century art history, bookmaking, natural history, and the visualization of narrative. La vida del Ysopet thus constitutes one of the finest concordances of text and illustration in European literary history.

The Wolf and the Lamb

The Wolf And The Lamb [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Wolf and the Lamb by Frederick Ramsay Book Resume:

It's Passover. Gamaliel and his physician friend, Loukas, are crime-solving a third time - reluctantly. Pontius Pilate has been accused of murder. He denies the crime. If convicted, he might escape death but would be removed from Judea. Those rejoicing urge the Rabban to mind his own business. But Gamaliel is a just man which is, as Pilate says to him, "your weakness and also your strength." Knowing that exonerating the Roman could cost him his position, possibly his life, Gamaliel, as would Sherlock Holmes centuries later, examines evidence and sorts through tangled threads, teasing out suspects who include assassins, Roman nobles, Pilate's wife, rogue legionnaires, slaves, servants, and thespians. Unusually, justice triumphs over enmity. Gamaliel is satisfied, High Priest Caiaphas is irate, Loukas accepts an apprentice from Tarsus, and few notice the events of what will later be known as Easter. Ramsay's plausible narrative answers some questions which have puzzled Biblical scholars for centuries. Why did Pilate hear the case against Jesus? Why invent a tradition that required one prisoner be released at Passover? And we ask, why could Caiaphas not heed Gamaliel's warnings not to martyr the man?

The Lily and the Thistle

The Wolf And The Lamb [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Lily and the Thistle by William Calin Book Resume:

In The Lily and the Thistle, William Calin argues for a reconsideration of the French impact on medieval and renaissance Scottish literature. Calin proposes that much of traditional, medieval, and early modern Scottish culture, thought to be native to Scotland or primarily from England, is in fact strikingly international and European. By situating Scottish works in a broad intertextual context, Calin reveals which French genres and modes were most popular in Scotland and why. The Lily and the Thistle provides appraisals of medieval narrative texts in the high courtly mode (equivalent to the French “dits amoureux”); comic, didactic, and satirical texts; and Scots romance. Special attention is accorded to texts composed originally in French such as the Arthurian “Roman de Fergus,” as well as to the lyrics of Mary Queen of Scots and little known writers from the French and Scottish canons. By considering both medieval and renaissance works, Calin is able to observe shifts in taste and French influence over the centuries.

A Tutorial on the Kitab-i-iqan

The Wolf And The Lamb [Pdf/ePub] eBook

A Tutorial on the Kitab-i-iqan by Fazel Naghdy Book Resume:

A journey through the Book of CertitudeThe Kitáb-i-Íqán is one of the most important Writings of Bahá'u'lláh, the Founder of the Bahá'í Faith. Bahá'u'lláh revealed this book within the space of two days and two nights, in the last years of His stay in Baghdád (AH 1278—AD 1862). According to Shoghi Effendi, the Guardian of the Bahá'í Faith, The Kitáb-i-Íqán sets “forth in outline the Grand Redemptive Scheme of God” and it “occupies a position unparalleled by any work in the entire range of the Bahá'í literature, except The Kitáb-i-Aqdas Bahá'u'lláh's Most Holy Book.”This current book is a record of the journey that the author has taken through The Kitáb-i-Íqán over a period of 12 years. It is not an interpretation or a critical analysis of the content of the book. Neither does it provide any personal opinion. It primarily guides reader through a systematic study of the Íqán while providing some background information on topics raised by Bahá'u'lláh in each paragraph. It is called a tutorial as it attempts to simulate, as much as possible, the tutor-tutored relationship in a self-paced personal study. All the references in the tutorial are sourced either from authoritative Bahá'í materials or obtained from other reliable sources. The 290 paragraphs of The Kitáb-i-Íqán are apportioned for study to 58 chapters. The size and complexity of each chapter reflects the content and intricacy of the issues addressed in the paragraphs included therein. Each chapter starts with an introduction that highlights the key ideas. Then in a coherent manner, background information on the terminologies, references and mystical concepts inherent in each paragraph is provided. The tutorial covers the 266 topics embedded in The Kitáb-i-Íqán.

The Wolf and the Sheep

The Wolf And The Lamb [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Wolf and the Sheep by Penelope Sky Book Resume:

Till death do us part. My father married me off to one of the most powerful men in Italy. Maverick DeVille. But I call him the wolf. He calls me his sheep. The arranged marriage was detested by us both, but we had to make sacrifices for the right reasons. He needed to avenge his mother and I needed protection from the mobs that want to torture me. He's not what I pictured for my husband. He's ruthless, calloused, and cold. His walls are higher than mine. He possesses cruelty that makes him feared. But it doesn't take long for me to respect him...even like him. I rely on my husband more than anyone else in the world. He provides for me, protects me, and chases away all my fears. He lets me graze in the meadow...not a care in the world. Because the wolf is always watching. "When people look in the darkness, they see shadows. I see monsters. And I kill the monsters that hunt my sheep." I hated this marriage in the beginning, but now I realize how lucky I am. How lucky I am to be the sheep the wolf protects...and doesn't eat.

Picturing the Wolf in Children's Literature

The Wolf And The Lamb [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Picturing the Wolf in Children's Literature by Debra Mitts-Smith Book Resume:

From the villainous beast of “Little Red Riding Hood” and “The Three Little Pigs,” to the nurturing wolves of Romulus and Remus and Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, the wolf has long been a part of the landscape of children’s literature. Meanwhile, since the 1960s and the popularization of scientific research on these animals, children’s books have begun to feature more nuanced views. In Picturing the Wolf in Children’s Literature, Mitts-Smith analyzes visual images of the wolf in children’s books published in Western Europe and North America from 1500 to the present. In particular, she considers how wolves are depicted in and across particular works, the values and attitudes that inform these depictions, and how the concept of the wolf has changed over time. What she discovers is that illustrations and photos in works for children impart social, cultural, and scientific information not only about wolves, but also about humans and human behavior. First encountered in childhood, picture books act as a training ground where the young learn both how to decode the “symbolic” wolf across various contexts and how to make sense of “real” wolves. Mitts-Smith studies sources including myths, legends, fables, folk and fairy tales, fractured tales, fictional stories, and nonfiction, highlighting those instances in which images play a major role, including illustrated anthologies, chapbooks, picture books, and informational books. This book will be of interest to children’s literature scholars, as well as those interested in the figure of the wolf and how it has been informed over time.

Aesop and the Imprint of Medieval Thought

The Wolf And The Lamb [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Aesop and the Imprint of Medieval Thought by Jacqueline de Weever Book Resume:

This work studies two medieval translations of Aesop's fables, one in Latin (1497) and one in vernacular Italian (1526), with a close examination of how each translation reflected its audience and its translator. It offers close readings of the "Feast of Tongues" along with six fables common to both texts: "The House Mouse and the Field Mouse," "The Lion and the Mouse," "The Nightingale and the Sparrow Hawk," "The Wolf and the Lamb," "The Fly and the Ant," and "The Donkey and the Lap-Dog." The selected fables highlight imbalances of power, different stations in life, and the central question of "how shall we live?"

Stigmata

The Wolf And The Lamb [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Stigmata by Hélène Cixous Book Resume:

Hèléne Cixous -- author, playwright and French feminist theorist -- is a key figure in twentieth-century literary theory. Stigmata brings together her most recent essays for the first time. Acclaimed for her intricate and challenging writing style, Cixous presents a collection of texts that get away -- escaping the reader, the writers, the book. Cixous's writing pursues authors such as Stendhal, Joyce, Derrida, and Rembrandt, da Vinci, Picasso -- works that share an elusive movement in spite of striking differences. Along the way these essays explore a broad range of poetico-philosophical questions that have become characteristic of Cixous' work: * love's labours lost and found * feminine hours * autobiographies of writing * the prehistory of the work of art Stigmata goes beyond theory, becoming an extraordinary writer's testimony to our lives and times.

Aesop's Fables

The Wolf And The Lamb [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Aesop's Fables by Aesop Book Resume:

'The story goes that a sow who had delivered a whole litter of piglets loudly accosted a lioness. "How many children do you breed?" asked the sow. "I breed only one", said the lioness, "but it is very well bred!"' The fables of Aesop have become one of the most enduring traditions of European culture, ever since they were first written down nearly two millennia ago. Aesop was reputedly a tongue-tied slave who miraculously received the power of speech; from his legendary storytelling came the collections of prose and verse fables scattered throughout Greek and Roman literature. First published in English by Caxton in 1484, the fables and their morals continue to charm modern readers: who does not know the story of the tortoise and the hare, or the boy who cried wolf? This new translation is the first to represent all the main fable collections in ancient Latin and Greek, arranged according to the fables' contents and themes. It includes 600 fables, many of which come from sources never before translated into English. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.
