A Light Unto My Path by James J. Bacik,Kevin E. Anderson Book Resume:

There are many books available on creating a good effective homily. This book, unique in that it is the product of a long-standing dialogue between James Bacik, a pastor and theologian, and Kevin Anderson, a clinical psychologist and author, offers those who preach theological perspectives and practical advice on proclaiming the word of God. The authors move through the process of preparing and delivering a homily from its conception to delivery. However, they emphasize the focus and function of the homily rather than the theme, and how this relates the message of the readings to the human or social concerns of the congregation. Here is a one-of-a-kind book that includes empirical data in the form of a survey to explore what works and does not work in preaching. It will provide a fresh perspective to those in homiletics courses in seminaries as well as hands-on advice for those who already preach.

The Juggler of Notre Dame and the Medievalizing of Modernity by Jan M. Ziolkowski Book Resume:

This ambitious and vivid study in six volumes explores the journey of a single, electrifying story, from its first incarnation in a medieval French poem through its prolific rebirth in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Juggler of Notre Dame tells how an entertainer abandons the world to join a monastery, but is suspected of blasphemy after dancing his devotion before a statue of the Madonna in the crypt; he is saved when the statue, delighted by his skill, miraculously comes to life. Jan Ziolkowski tracks the poem from its medieval roots to its rediscovery in late nineteenth-century Paris, before its translation into English in Britain and the United States. The visual influence of the tale on Gothic revivalism and vice versa in America is carefully documented with lavish and inventive illustrations, and Ziolkowski concludes with an examination of the explosion of interest in The Juggler of Notre Dame in the twentieth century and its place in mass culture today. In this volume Jan Ziolkowski follows the juggler of Notre Dame as he cavorts through new media, including radio, television, and film, becoming closely associated with Christmas and embedded in children’s literature. Presented with great clarity and simplicity, Ziolkowski's work is accessible to the general reader, while its many new discoveries will be valuable to academics in such fields and disciplines as medieval studies, medievalism, philology, literary history, art history, folklore, performance studies, and reception studies.

Sacred Fire by Ronald Rolheiser Book Resume:

When one reaches the highest degree of human maturity, one has only one question left: How can I be helpful?—TERESA OF ÁVILA Beloved author Ronald Rolheiser continues his search for an accessible and penetrating Christian spirituality in this highly anticipated follow-up to the contemporary classic, The Holy Longing. With his trademark acuity, wit, and thoughtfulness, Rolheiser shows how identifying and embracing discipleship will lead to new heights of spiritual awareness and maturity. In this new book, Rolheiser takes us on a journey through the dark night of the senses and of the spirit. Here, we experience the full gamut of human life, pleasure and fervor, disillusionment and boredom. But, as Rolheiser explains, when we embrace the struggle and yearning to know God we can experience too a profound re-understanding to our daily lives. “What lies beyond the essentials, the basics?” Rolheiser writes. “Where do we go once some of the basic questions in our lives have been answered, or at least brought to enough peace that our focus can shift away from ourselves to others? Where do we go once the basic questions in our lives are no longer the restless questions of youthful insecurity and loneliness? Who am I? Who loves me? How will my life turn out? Where do we go once the basic question in life becomes: How can I give my life away more purely, and more meaningfully? How do I live beyond my own heartaches, headaches, and obsessions so as to help make other peoples’ lives more meaningful? The intent of this book is to try to address exactly those questions: How can we live less self- centered, more mature lives? What constitutes deep maturity and how do we reach that place? And, not unimportantly, what constitutes a more adult, Christian discipleship? What constitutes a truly mature following of Jesus?” As the poet Rainer Maria Rilke suggests, “Live the questions now.” In Sacred Fire, Rolheiser’s deeply affecting prose urges us on in pursuit of the most holy of all passions—a deep and lasting intimacy with God.

Like a Hammer Shattering Rock by Megan McKenna Book Resume:

Renowned Catholic author Megan McKenna celebrates her 50th book with a controversial interpretation of the Gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John and what they mean for the Church and society today. In many ways, modern audiences have become so familiar with the gospels that we've stopped listening and integreting their wisdom into our everyday lives. Acclaimed author Megan McKenna explores the messages of the four gospels in the context of daily life when they were originally written and interprets their meaning for our modern world. While some argue for the development of new gospels for the 21st century, McKenna argues that we haven't paid due attention to the ones we already have; in many cases, we've ignored sections of these teachings entirely and twisted their meaning to suit our own agendas. McKenna breaks it down, gospel by gospel, and shows us how the lessons of Jesus's apostles continue to resonate.

Some Rise by Sin by Philip Caputo Book Resume:

New York Times bestselling author Philip Caputo tells the story of a Franciscan priest struggling to walk a moral path through the shifting and fatal realities of an isolated Mexican village The Mexican village of San Patricio is being menaced by a bizarre, cultish drug cartel infamous for its brutality. As the townspeople try to defend themselves by forming a vigilante group, the Mexican army and police have their own ways of fighting back. Into this volatile mix of forces for good and evil (and sometimes both) steps an unlikely broker for peace: Timothy Riordan, an American missionary priest who must decide whether to betray his vows to stop the unspeakable violence and help the people he has pledged to protect. Riordan’s fellow expatriate Lisette Moreno serves the region in a different way, as a doctor who makes “house calls” to impoverished settlements, advocating modern medicine to a traditional society wary of outsiders. To gain acceptance, she must keep secret her rocky love affair with artist Pamela Childress, whose troubled emotions lead Moreno to question their relationship. Together, Lisette and Riordan tend to their community. But when Riordan oversteps the bounds of his position, his personal crisis echoes the impossible choices facing a nation beset by instability and bloodshed. Based on actual events, propelled by moral conflict, and animated by a keen and discerning sensibility, Some Rise by Sin demonstrates yet again Philip Caputo’s generous and insightful gifts as a storyteller.

Gathering Together by Rodney Wallace Kennedy,Derek C. Hatch Book Resume:

Concerned to think intentionally about liturgy in Baptist life and thought, this book aims to address the practices of Christian worship in a theological light, examining how each brings individual Christian believers and communities of faith to a greater understanding and embodiment of the gospel. In this mode, worship becomes a seamless garment that forms disciples of Christ and opens out toward the world. In short, theology, worship, and mission all intersect in the liturgical life of the body of Christ. In addition to theological engagement with liturgical practices, Gathering Together links reflection to praxis by offering sample patterns as a guide for reenvisioning the shape of Baptist (and other free church) worship.

Consensus and Conflict by Kenda Creasy Dean,Blair D. Bertrand,Amanda Hontz Drury,Andrew Root Book Resume:

Most students of practical theology recognize Richard R. Osmer as the originator of the “consensus model” of practical theology, one of the most accessible and widely used models of practical theological model in the world. Yet Osmer’s influence extends beyond practical theological method. Over his long career, his writing and teaching spanned Christian education, youth ministry, spirituality, and evangelism as well, giving each of these congregational practices new theological substance. A pastor as well as a scholar at heart, Osmer writes with the American congregation in mind, insisting on making theology central to every Christian practice. Consensus and Conflict traces Osmer’s multi-faceted intellectual career from his days as seminarian through his professoriate at Princeton Theological Seminary and his role in the founding of the International Academy of Practical Theology. These themes unfold against the backdrop of ecclesial change that Osmer barely anticipated as a young pastor in New England and western North Carolina. The contributors to this volume bear witness to Osmer’s indebtedness to social sciences, theologians like Moltmann and Barth, his wide range of interests ranging from confirmation to redemptive agriculture to church planting, and his deep hope that the theological disciplines will play a more vital role in practical theology’s future.

When the Secular World Collides With the Spiritual World by John Rose Book Resume:

After founding a Food Ministry in 1987, and serving as the director, counselor and teacher for sixteen years I found that people, Christian people do not know much about the Bible, I have been studying the scriptures for twenty-five years. My life was nothing to be proud of, but when the Holy Spirit drew me to Jesus and I ask Him to be Lord of my life, that I wanted the best He has for me, and I would give Him the best I could give. I want my Christian brethren to know all He died for us is ours, for He loves us. We counseled with the people and showed them through the bible how Jesus could meet their needs, Then we gave them food, good food that they could make a good meals from, as time passed I did not see that the people were gaining much to change their lives, and Jesus was teaching me more about the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth . It does not penetrate the people's heart that we can have heaven here on earth, because the Preachers and Teachers do not know how to live in heaven here on earth. You need to know how to live in the Spirit and not in the world; the kingdom of heaven is a spiritual place. Galatians, 4:16, This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. V-17, For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary the one to the other, so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. V-18, But if ye be led of the Spirit, Ye are not under the law. I do not mean to go round saying praise the Lord or hallelujah, all over the place, I mean to make your home a heavenly place to live, love your neighbor, love thy God, do good to others get all the unforgiveness out of your heart, ask Jesus to forgive you of your sins. This is the reason for this book and other books to come. There is no reason for people to go to hell, when the kingdom of heaven is in you. My intended reader is all-Christians, that are confused about the bible. and the unsaved. Ephesians, 6:19, And for me, that utterance mat be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, V-20 which I am an ambassador in bonds; that therein I may speak boldly, as I ough to speak. The only way to know the mystery's of the gospels is through the Spirit. John O. Rose E-mail iamthewayminis[email protected]

Catholic Moral Tradition, Revised by David Bohr Book Resume:

Too many Catholics tend to believe that morality is primarily about keeping laws and avoiding sin. 'Catholic Moral Tradition, Revised', shows how from the beginning, the Christian moral life is first and foremost about living our lives according to the new law of grace. The gift of the Holy Spirit, given us at baptism, is a dynamic inner principle that transforms us into a new creation in Christ. This book presents an introductory summary of contemporary Catholic moral teaching based upon the renewal mandated by the Second Vatican Council. It also incorporates subsequent Church documents, especially the moral encyclicals of John Paul II--'Veritatis Splendor' and 'Evangelium Vitae'--along with his three encyclicals on Catholic social doctrine and the 'Catechism of the Catholic Church'.
