Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London. The Silent Patient by Darlene Jamison Book Resume:

I was in my thirties when I attended nursing school, and I took the year-long crash course to get it over with as a LPN (licensed practical nurse). I was blessed to be able to cram the crash course in a year. I was particularly nervous when I had to take the state board exam to determine my becoming a nurse. After studying so hard for a complete year, I wasn’t sure if I would pass the state board exam. But I did pass the test, and I was so thankful to Jesus for this, for allowing me to pass the first time I took the exam. Prior to me going to nursing school and during nursing school, people and some family members were telling me that studying to be a nurse was not going to be easy and that it was going to be hard. There were even statements that I wouldn’t graduate, also gossip that I would drop out. I stayed away from those type of people with negativity and waiting for my failure. Readers, remember, the only thing that beats a failure is a trier, and as long as one tries, then you’re not a failure because at least you tried. After retiring as a nurse, an 8-mm aneurysm was discovered in my brain. I died during brain surgery, and now I know there is life after death. Even though I wanted to stay in the arms of God and not return to my body, He sent me back anyway ’cause it wasn’t my time yet. I will never forget the wonderful experience being with the Lord. That’s why I wanted to stay because of the joy and happiness. I titled this book The Silent Patient ’cause when my spirit returned back into my body—I was in a coma for a week—I was told that I couldn’t speak, but I could hear my visitors and could hear the health care staff. I just couldn’t speak or respond. I had to fight all my life, and now I had to fight to come out of a coma. I’ve been diagnosed with another brain aneurysm, but life goes on and live it to its fullest. Addendum to The Silent Patient: Roger and I didn’t sleep in the same bedroom the last two years of our marriage, which was my decision because he disgusted me. I had grown to despise him. I discovered, as years passed, that he had been doing illicit drugs since he was twelve years old. He would sneak and wear my panties and negligees, and I asked him for a divorce. He told me he would never divorce me, and if I tried to divorce him that he would make my life a living hell, and he smirked and said, “You know what I am capable of doing.” He said he would ruin me in every way that he could dream of. He told me he planned to kill his father for insurance but decided not to go through it. He also told me that he kept trying to get his ex-wife to go to the mountains so he could push her over a cliff and kill her. I did not know how to swim, and he kept insisting that we go see the ocean. Well, I wasn’t going to do that based on what he had told me. It was all about money with him no matter what he had to do to get it. Knowing his murderous intentions, he was capable of anything. I know he drugged me sometimes because I have flashbacks of some things. He was a drug addict; whether it would be prescription drugs or illicit drugs, he would do it. He always became violent when he was on drugs. I receive a lump sum of award money, and since I couldn’t count or do a lot of things after brain surgery, he went through my money like water. I had no idea he was doing this. He was plotting since the day we met. I can see that now. Most of my money went on his drugs and splurging all his desires. He was not going to let go of me. He only wanted to live off me ’cause he was too lazy to work. I overheard him on the phone one day, saying he was not going to work anymore. He didn’t realize that some of my memory was coming back to me. One day, when I came home, he wouldn’t let me in the house ’cause he didn’t want me to see him in women’s clothing and makeup. When I pushed the door open with my key, he slammed the door on my hand, and I called the police. He was arrested, and I filed for divorce right away with a restraining order. I didn’t care what threats he was going to do although I knew he would stalk me, which he did. I just went for the divorce and got it. That was a happy day for me.

The Spellbook of Katrina Van Tassel by Alyssa Palombo Book Resume:

"Marrying forbidden love, devoted friendship, and the supernatural with Palombo's signature passion for music, storytelling, and heartbreaking choices, The Spellbook of Katrina Van Tasselenchants with a concoction of love, longing, and loss plucked from the bones of one of our most enduring and haunting legends." - Erin Lindsay McCabe, USA Today bestselling author of I Shall Be Near to You When Ichabod Crane arrives in the spooky little village of Sleepy Hollow as the new schoolmaster, Katrina Van Tassel is instantly drawn to him. Through their shared love of books and music, they form a friendship that quickly develops into romance. Ichabod knows that as an itinerant schoolteacher of little social standing, he has nothing to offer the wealthy Katrina – unlike her childhood friend-turned-enemy, Brom Van Brunt, who is the suitor Katrina’s father favors. But when romance gives way to passion, Ichabod and Katrina embark on a secret love affair, sneaking away into the woods after dark to be together – all while praying they do not catch sight of Sleepy Hollow’s legendary Headless Horseman. That is, until All Hallows’s Eve, when Ichabod suddenly disappears, leaving Katrina alone and in a perilous position. Enlisting the help of her friend – and rumored witch – Charlotte Jansen, Katrina seeks the truth of Ichabod Crane’s disappearance, investigating the forest around Sleepy Hollow using unconventional – often magical – means. What they find forces Katrina to question everything she once knew, and to wonder if the Headless Horseman is perhaps more than just a story after all. In Alyssa Palombo's The Spellbook of Katrina Van Tassel nothing is as it seems, and love is a thing even death won't erase.

She Lies in Wait by Gytha Lodge Book Resume:

Six friends. One killer. Who do you trust? A teen girl is missing after a night of partying; thirty years later, the discovery of her body reopens a cold case in “a scorching portrait of friendship and its betrayal.” (Nicci French). “This enjoyably chilling suspense tale . . . conveys both the thrills and the dangers of being a teenager on the brink of adult independence.”—The New York Times Book Review On a scorching July night in 1983, a group of teenagers goes camping in the forest. When they wake in the morning the youngest of their group, Aurora Jackson, has disappeared. An exhaustive investigation is launched, but no trace of the teenager is ever found. Thirty years later, Aurora’s body is unearthed in a hideaway that only the six friends knew about, and Jonah Sheens is put in charge of solving the long-cold case. Back in 1983, as a young cop in their small town, he had known the teenagers—including Aurora—personally, even before taking part in the search. Now he’s determined to finally get to the truth of what happened that night. Sheens’s investigation brings the members of the camping party back to the forest, where they will be confronted once again with the events that left one of them dead and all of them profoundly changed forever. This searing, psychologically captivating novel marks the arrival of a dazzling new talent, and the start of a new series featuring Detective Chief Inspector Jonah Sheens. Praise for She Lies in Wait “A novel that literally makes you hold your breath then gasp out loud.”—Val McDermid “She Lies in Wait is an atmospheric, deeply satisfying, well-written mystery whose resolution rings true after lots of false leads and blind alleys. A remarkably adept first novel. One hopes there will be many more to come.”—Daily Herald “The mystery intrigues and twists, offering enough red herrings and moments of police procedural to please fans of the genre.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “What a marvel! A corkscrew-twisty, knife-sharp thriller—yet it doubles as a tender ode to loss and longing. Prepare to be haunted.”—A. J. Finn, author of the New York Times bestseller The Woman in the Window

The Magpies

The Magpies by Mark Edwards Book Resume:

Meet the neighbors from hell, in the gripping thriller that reviewers and readers describe as “fast-paced,” “chilling,” and “impossible to put down.” When Jamie and Kirsty move into their first home together, they are full of optimism. The future, in which they plan to get married and start a family, is bright. The other residents of their building seem friendly too, including the Newtons, a married couple who welcome them to the building with open arms. But then strange things start to happen. Dead rats are left on their doorstep. They hear disturbing noises, and much worse, in the night. After Jamie's best friend is injured in a horrific accident, Jamie and Kirsty find themselves targeted by a campaign of terror. As they are driven to the edge of despair, Jamie vows to fight back—but he has no idea what he is really up against… The Magpies is a gripping psychological thriller in which the monsters are not vampires or demons but the people who live next door. It is a nightmare that could happen to anyone. Praise for The Magpies “Mark Edwards achieves what other writers yearn for, by creating characters that genuinely feel like real people, individuals you know personally—and then puts them into the scariest of situations so that we cannot help but suffer with them. Edwards takes the places that should feel safe and subverts them, shifting the ground beneath our feet, until we're left clinging to the book, hoping against hope for a positive conclusion. There's something deeply unsettling about The Magpies—and that's exactly as it should be.” —Elizabeth Haynes, author of Into the Darkest Corner “The Magpies is absorbing, claustrophobic and terrifying. Read this book! Then get a top notch alarm system fitted in your house.” —Helen Fitzgerald, author of The Cry
