The Mirror of the Eyes by Book Resume:

The Mirror of the Eyes was inspired by various people whom I have encountered in my life journey. It is a melting pot of expressions and cultures that encourages the reader to find himself or herself on several pages. The choice in name for this book provides an escape to be gentle with oneself as you are allowed to take a glimpse of souls, minds, and hearts that come alive through different lens. The Mirror of the Eyes provides the opportunity for the reader to make time to heal, to reflect, to rest in the fact that changes will come and that one should be prepared. It is divided into seven segments; each segment provides different types of poems for different emotions and times. Colors from a Blink exposes the cultural preferences, The Soul in Black and White reminds us of our sensitivity and sensibility. Both Sides of the Lens shows the struggle between the sexes and highlights the differences as they are, while Eyes of Grain speaks to pain and disappointment. When comparing Opaque Lens to Behind the Retina, the reader is faced with spirituality and human weaknesses. See Through is flirtatious and gives the reader the opportunity to relax in vulnerability and laugh at oneself.

The Mirror in the Mirror by Michael Ende Book Resume:

“The Mirror in the Mirror” - Michael Ende’s book is a fantastic story labyrinth of a very special kind. For the author himself, this work was of great importance: in interviews, he liked to call it his “never-ending story for adult readers.” The reader is taken into a mysterious narrative world, full of bizarre situations and mysterious fates, surreal images and philosophical thoughts. Those who open themselves in amazement to these enigmatic visions and allow themselves to be drawn into the fantastic stories will emerge from Michael Ende’s magic labyrinth with a new perspective. The core question is: What is reflected in a mirror that is reflected in a mirror? If two readers read the same book, they are still not reading the same thing. For both people immerse themselves into the reading. The book becomes a mirror in which the reader is reflected. But in the same way, the reader is also a mirror in which the book is reflected: The mirror in the mirror refers the reader back to himself. The FAZ writes that Michael Ende shows with the book “how much darkness, wildness and rawness is inherent in dreams. He does not trivialize. His dreams make reference to reality because in dreams, Cicero wrote, ‘the remnants of those objects roll and tumble about in the souls which we have thought and impelled while awake’.”

I did, and the Holy Spirit said, who are you to question infinite God and his wisdom, with your finite mind. We may never understand, why God does, what he does, but he is almighty God, and we are just the little people. (Isaiah chapter 40)

The Mirror of the Sea - Joseph Conrad - First published in 1906, The Mirror of the Sea was the first of Joseph Conrad's two autobiographical memoirs. Discussing it, he called the book "a very intimate revelation. . . . I have attempted here to lay bare with the unreserve of a last hour's confession the terms of my relation with the sea, which beginning mysteriously, like any great passion the inscrutable Gods send to mortals, went on unreasoning and invincible, surviving the test of disillusion, defying the disenchantment that lurks in every day of a strenuous life; went on full of love's delight and love's anguish, facing them in open-eyed exultation without bitterness and without repining, from the first hour to the last."

The Mirror of My Heart by Book Resume:

An anthology of verse by women poets writing in Persian, most of whom have never been translated into English before, from acclaimed scholar and translator Dick Davis. A Penguin Classic The Mirror of My Heart is a unique and captivating collection of eighty-three Persian women poets, many of whom wrote anonymously or were punished for their outspokenness. One of the very first Persian poets was a woman (Rabe'eh, who lived over a thousand years ago) and there have been women poets writing in Persian in virtually every generation since that time until the present. Before the twentieth century they tended to come from society's social extremes--many were princesses, some were entertainers, but many were wives and daughters who wrote simply for their own entertainment, and they were active in many different countries - Iran, India, Afghanistan, and areas of central Asia that are now Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan. From Rabe'eh in the tenth century to Fatemeh Ekhtesari in the twenty-first, the women poets found in The Mirror of My Heart write across the millennium on such universal topics as marriage, children, political climate, death, and emancipation, recreating life from hundreds of years ago that is strikingly similar to our own today and giving insight into their experiences as women throughout different points of Persian history. The volume is introduced and translated by Dick Davis, a scholar and translator of Persian literature as well as a gifted poet in his own right.

The Mirror at Midnight by Adam Hochschild Book Resume:

A “stunning blend of reportage, travelogue, history and meditation” by the New York Times–bestselling author of King Leopold’s Ghost (Publishers Weekly). National Book Award finalist Adam Hochschild brings a lifetime’s familiarity with South Africa to bear in this eye-opening examination of a critical turning point in that nation’s history: the Great Trek of 1836–39, during which Dutch-speaking white settlers, known as Boers, journeyed deep into the country’s interior to escape the British colonial administration. The mass migration culminated with the massacre of indigenous Zulus in the 1838 Battle of Blood River. Looking at the tensions of modern South Africa through the dramatic prism of the nineteenth century, Hochschild vividly recreates the battle—and its contentious commemoration by rival groups 150 years later. In his epilogue, Hochschild extends his view to the astonishing political changes that have occurred in the country in recent decades—and the changes yet to be made. Hochschild’s incisive take on these events, noted Nadine Gordimer, “is far more than an outsider’s perception of the drama of our country. Read him, in particular, to understand the rise of white extremism which is threatening the democratic vision of the African National Congress and its allied progressive constituency among people of all colors.” “A good book for anyone who wants a succinct and precise account of how this fascinating country has got where it is. . . . This is a book I recommend warmly.” —Archbishop Desmond Tutu “One of the most illuminating books ever written on contemporary South Africa.” —Publishers Weekly “Thoroughly researched, immensely readable . . . A work of vivid reportage and astute political analysis.” —San Francisco Chronicle

Patrick Fazioli grounds his analysis in contemporary struggles over power and identity in the Eastern Alps, while also considering the broader implications for scholarly research and public memory.

Born is Unborn by Anup Rej Book Resume:

God appears in the mind of a physicist and an existentialist in a puzzling manner, which creates shock and astonishment that the scientist cannot overcome for the rest of his life. Since then he gets confused about finding answers about the true nature of the reality and the mystery of the existence of God. A highly creative person, with wide knowledge in many fields of science and arts, grapples all his life to understand these personal experiences, which defy all scientific knowledge and reason. Whenever he manages to harness enough doubts and attempts to get rid of the supernatural world, which keeps his life a captive of a weird mental phenomenon that cannot be understood by any intellectual reasoning, God appears again and again. He gives messages with such clarity of “illumination” that all defenses of reason, which a scientist may erect with his intellectual capacity, fall apart. Judging from scientific perspective many neurologists would like to interpret such mental phenomenon as caused by abnormal brain activities, and explain God as a delusion rising from malfunctioning of the brain. The book will throw lights upon the questions: “Do these experiences represent a case of a brain damage, resulting in wrong neural circuitry, which generate the messages of God in the mind, or does there truly exist God, who is beyond intellectual comprehension of even a very sophisticated human mind? After experiencing continuous dilemma and conflicts for more than fifty years the nuclear scientist and a cosmologist, who was a believer of the western existential philosophy in his young age, remains at bay without finding any convincing answer. This book reveals a hidden world which has disturbed, puzzled and created agony and despair on one side, and illumined the mind with knowledge and vision, not accessible through intellectual process of the mind, on the other hand. It is a story of pain and joy, suffering followed by profound ebullience of a spirit which is one with the cosmos and resides in us.

A Mirror for England by Raymond Durgnat Book Resume:

Raymond Durgnat's classic study of British films from the 1940s to the 1960s, first published in 1970, remains one of the most important books ever written on British cinema. In his introduction, Kevin Gough-Yates writes: 'Even now, it astounds by its courage and its audacity; if you think you have an 'original' approach to a filmor a director's work and check it against A Mirror for England, you generally discover that Raymond Durgnat had said it already.' Durgnat himself said about the book that 'the main point was arranging a kind of rendezvous between thinking about movies and thinking, not so much about sociology, as about the experiences that people are having all the time.' Durgnat used Mirror to assert the validity of British cinema against its dismissal by the critics of Cahiers du cinéma and Sight and Sound. His analysis takes in classics such as In Which We Serve (1942), A Matter of Life and Death (1946) and The Blue Lamp (1949), alongside 'B' films and popular genres such as Hammer horror. Durgnat makes a cogent and compelling case for the success of British films in reflecting British predicaments, moods and myths, at the same time as providing some disturbing new insights into a national character by whose enigmas and contradictions we continue to be perplexed and fascinated.

Inside from the Outside by Peter Baltensperger Book Resume:

Dealing with the basic elements that make us human, the short stories contained in Inside from the Outside represent explorations of various aspects of human nature in all its complexity and variety. Author Peter Baltensperger has incorporated elements of experimental, surrealistic, and bizarre short fiction. The stories, classified as sudden fiction, are all less than a thousand words long and focus on the many archetypal characteristics which constitute the human psyche. In From the Secrets of Tree, Sybil Strong attempts to discover the secrets of the forest during a horseback ride and swim in the river. Mitchell Collier, in Amid the Variegated Currents, battles the river for answers as he calls attention to Sisyphus of the River. In Across the Lake, Morgana Cronin uses a swim in a clear lake on a hot afternoon to solve lifes puzzles. This collection exemplifies the never-ending search for meaning and the primordial quest for selfhood as the characters struggle to find themselves in a confusing world. Praise for Inside from the Outside Because the dreamscape of Peter Baltenspergers prose is precisely where Jung meets Freud, the spare, direct, and deeply affective stories in this volume represent the specific way that the archetypal heritage can surface far more profoundly in the sensual persona than in the curious intellect or the emotive heart. These are stories about the human condition and about the commonality of the human experience shared by all. Like Conrad, Nabokov, and Appelfeld, Baltensperger writes in a learned language. But that only makes his writing the more remarkable: this is English-language short prose at its most arresting and at its most seductive. Martin S. Cohen, essayist, novelist, commentator, and editor

The Mirror of the Self

The Mirror of the Self [Pdf/ePub] eBook ISBN-10:
Author: Shadi Bartsch
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
File Size: 748 KB
File Format: Pdf
Read Count: 4121631

The Mirror of the Self by Shadi Bartsch Book Resume:

People in the ancient world thought of vision as both an ethical tool and a tactile sense, akin to touch. Gazing upon someone—or oneself—was treated as a path to philosophical self-knowledge, but the question of tactility introduced an erotic element as well. In The Mirror of the Self, Shadi Bartsch asserts that these links among vision, sexuality, and self-knowledge are key to the classical understanding of the self. Weaving together literary theory, philosophy, and social history, Bartsch traces this complex notion of self from Plato’s Greece to Seneca’s Rome. She starts by showing how ancient authors envisioned the mirror as both a tool for ethical self-improvement and, paradoxically, a sign of erotic self-indulgence. Her reading of the Phaedrus, for example, demonstrates that the mirroring gaze in Plato, because of its sexual possibilities, could not be adopted by Roman philosophers and their students. Bartsch goes on to examine the Roman treatment of the ethical and sexual gaze, and she traces how self-knowledge, the philosopher’s body, and the performance of virtue all played a role in shaping the Roman understanding of the nature of selfhood. Culminating in a profoundly original reading of Medea, The Mirror of the Self illustrates how Seneca, in his Stoic quest for self-knowledge, embodies the Roman view, marking a new point in human thought about self-perception. Bartsch leads readers on a journey that unveils divided selves, moral hypocrisy, and lustful Stoics—and offers fresh insights about seminal works. At once sexy and philosophical, The Mirror of the Self will be required reading for classicists, philosophers, and anthropologists alike.

The Mirror of Her Dreams by Stephen R. Donaldson Book Resume:

With The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, Stephen R. Donaldson changed the face of fantasy fiction forever. In The Mirror of Her Dreams, the astonishing first novel in the two-volume Mordant’s Need series, Donaldson shows us a world of wondrous beauty and seductive illusion, where mirrors hold the deadliest of magics and nothing is what it seems. . . . The daughter of rich but neglectful parents, Terisa Morgan lives alone in a New York City apartment, a young woman who has grown to doubt her own existence. Surrounded by the flat reassurance of mirrors, she leads an unfulfilled life—until the night a strange man named Geraden comes crashing through one of her mirrors, on a quest to find a champion to save his kingdom of Mordant from a pervasive evil that threatens the land. Terisa is no champion. She wields neither magic nor power. And yet, much to her own surprise, when Geraden begs her to come back with him, she agrees. Now, in a culture where women are little more than the playthings of powerful men, in a castle honeycombed with secret passages and clever traps, in a kingdom threatened from without and within by enemies able to appear and vanish out of thin air, Terisa must become more than the pale reflection of a person. For the way back to Earth is closed to her. And the enemies of Mordant will stop at nothing to see her dead.

The Mirror of God by James W. Jones Book Resume:

What are the benefits of being a spiritual person? This is the question that James Jones explores in his newest book, The Mirror of God. Jones contends that true religious belief is not a passive process and that one must work hard towards believing in God through acts such as prayer, meditation and communal worship. He explores the boundaries between psychotherapy and religious practice, looks at what Christians might learn from Buddhists and shows their effects on the body and mind. Jones is a psychologist as well as a professor of religion and, ultimately, he provides a blueprint for worship that's smart, effective and grounded in the real lives we all live.

Medieval Women in the Mirror of Geoffrey Chaucer’s Literary Output by Marta Zapała-Kraj Book Resume:

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2021 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 5.0, , language: English, abstract: What can we say about Chaucer’s life with certainty? If we were to be honest – nothing can be said about either his private life or, for example, the exact date of his birth. He, himself – the one who led the English literature to the European peaks, mentions in 1386 that he might be "forty and something". Chaucer’s life was quite well recorder in numerous official documents. In the further part of my discourse I shall explain why it was so. Geoffrey Chaucer – using the pathetic description - one of the Founding Fathers of English literature, had glamorous and satisfying from the mercantile point of view life. His career allowed him to travel extensively and to see and experience much more than the average human-being of the Middle Ages could imagine. The rare periods in his life when he was short of money revealed the self-made man, able to find himself a job that would provide him satisfying profit. What else than a broad mind and brilliant career could satisfy a medieval man? Chaucer proved to be a man far ahead his times, someone whom we could call the Renaissance Man. Being exposed to art and literature, the achievements of his age, he decided to take part in creating it, not only being a passive observer. And so not only did he translate fragments of Italian and French literature to make them broadly known in his home country but also he wrote his own outstanding works. Most of them probably imitations or borrowings from French or Italian texts. However, Chaucer’s unquestionable skill to portray and mock the society of the Medieval times will remain immortal in the superb Canterbury Tales.
