Beneath a Hunter's Moon by Michael Zimmer Book Resume:

A intriguing tale of métis buffalo hunts, a long-lost daughter, and a macabre secret. Big John McTavish has been hunting and trading among the métis buffalo hunters of the Red River Valley for more than thirty years. He’s a trusted member of the half-breed nation, and a leader of the mixed-bloods’ twice-yearly buffalo hunts. However, when he returns to the settlements in the fall of 1832 with a mountain man he’s rescued from a Chippewa war party, he has no way of knowing the chain of events the outsider is about to unleash on the unsuspecting hunters, or the kind of destruction that will follow them onto the buffalo ranges that border the lonely Missouri River. Before the hunters return to their homes along the river, Big John will learn the macabre secret that has brought the trapper from the far reaches of the Rocky Mountains. He will discover a daughter he thought he’d lost forever, and relive the horror that took her away. And the métis will come to realize that if they are to survive as an independent nation, they must forever free themselves of the influence not only of the powerful Hudson Bay Company, but also of the man they have viewed as their friend for more than a quarter of a century. Beneath a Hunter’s Moon is a novel of honor and treason, love and betrayal, but mostly it is a story about a proud and wonderful people—the métis of the Red River Valley. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction that takes place in the old West. Go hunting and fishing with Mike Yurk in Hunter’s Moon, Fisherman’s Sun. It is a collection of twenty two stories that will take you from Alaska to Key West with a lot of time in the upper Mid West where Mike grew up and still lives. It begins with memories of opening day of the fishing season and ends with a long winter followed by two more opening days. In between we fish for halibut in Alaska, hunt pheasants in South Dakota and get a fish fry in Key West. We go back with Mike to when he was a boy and young man learning to hunt. He takes us with him hunting for big ducks on a big lake, a pond where he hunted for geese, the joys of hunting on Saturdays, and shooting rabbits in the snow. We go ice fishing when the walleyes went nuts on his favorite home lake and again on a northern Minnesota lake where friends gather in the winter for a special ice fishing event. The stories move from the past to the present. There are memories of Lake Michigan as a boy to many years later catching salmon there. There are recollections of fishing with his grandfather and father on a beloved river to now teaching his grandson to fish for bass. There are the days of unlimited joy of summer vacation as a boy to a perfect summer day catching smallmouth bass as a much older fisherman. The stories are more then just catching fish or shooting game. They are about people, both in the past and present, and the impact they have on the days of a hunter’s moon or a fisherman’s sun.

There, in the company of a charismatic Moroccan guide, amid the sultry heat, the spice markets, and exotic ruins, Julia discovers buried secrets. And in Morocco – just as Cat did before her – she loses her heart. Almost 400 years apart, the stories of the two women converge in an extraordinary and haunting manner that will make readers wonder – is history fated to repeat itself?

The Qualities of Time by Wendy James,David Mills Book Resume:

This book explores the relevance of classical ideas in the anthropology of time tothe way we understand history, participate in the events around us, and experienceour lives. Time is not just an abstract principle we live by or a local cultural construct: it is shaped, punctuated, organized, and suffered in complex ways by real people negotiating their lives and relations with others. Space may be opened up for politics, violence or revolutionary change within the framework of ceremonial markers of social time: holy days, festivals and carnivals. People create and recreate patterns in the way they imagine the past, present and future at such moments, through material objects, language, symbolic action and bodily experience. The rhythms of social life, including periodic episodes of sacred or special time, interact with 'historical events' in strange ways. They are fundamental not only to the human condition but to the making andremembering of history, as well as to what we recognize as the unexpected or abnormal. The Qualities of Time brings anthropologists and archaeologists together in a new conversation about the 'patterns' of our understanding and experience of time. The authors reflect on how we should interpret evidence about the distant past, andhow far the structuring of social time is a human universal. They also consider whether anthropology itself has been so oriented to the present it has still to develop ways of dealing with temporality. The interactions of time-structures, ceremonials, and specific historical events, including violence inspired by the millennium, are interrogated. The experience of individuals who feel the times are for them 'out of joint' is also examined. By combining socio-cultural, philosophical and historical approaches, thisthought-provoking book moves anthropological debates about time's qualities wellbeyond existing studies. This book explores the relevance of classical ideas in the anthropology of time toth
