The Freedom Writers Diary (20th Anniversary Edition) by Book Resume:

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The twentieth anniversary edition of the classic story of an incredible group of students and the teacher who inspired them, featuring updates on the students’ lives, new journal entries, and an introduction by Erin Gruwell Now a public television documentary, Freedom Writers: Stories from the Heart In 1994, an idealistic first-year teacher in Long Beach, California, named Erin Gruwell confronted a room of “unteachable, at-risk” students. She had intercepted a note with an ugly racial caricature and angrily declared that this was precisely the sort of thing that led to the Holocaust. She was met by uncomprehending looks—none of her students had heard of one of the defining moments of the twentieth century. So she rebooted her entire curriculum, using treasured books such as Anne Frank’s diary as her guide to combat intolerance and misunderstanding. Her students began recording their thoughts and feelings in their own diaries, eventually dubbing themselves the “Freedom Writers.” Consisting of powerful entries from the students’ diaries and narrative text by Erin Gruwell, The Freedom Writers Diary is an unforgettable story of how hard work, courage, and determination changed the lives of a teacher and her students. In the two decades since its original publication, the book has sold more than one million copies and inspired a major motion picture Freedom Writers. And now, with this twentieth-anniversary edition, readers are brought up to date on the lives of the Freedom Writers, as they blend indispensable takes on social issues with uplifting stories of attending college—and watch their own children follow in their footsteps. The Freedom Writers Diary remains a vital read for anyone who believes in second chances.

Critical Mindfulness by Sayyed Mohsen Fatemi Book Resume:

Expanding on the trailblazing ideas of Ellen Langer, this provocative volume explores the implications of critical mindfulness for making psychology more responsive and its practice more meaningful. Powerful critiques take the discipline to task for positioning therapists as experts over their clients and focusing on outcomes to the detriment of therapeutic process. Contributors use the principles of Langerian mindfulness to inform self-understanding and relationships, areas such as athletic performance and consumer decision making, and basic and complex forms of cognitive engagement. The mindfulness demonstrated here is not only critical but also creative, inclusive, and humane, with the potential to transform the consciousness of psychology and other mind-based fields. Included in the coverage: · Critical mindfulness of psychology’s mindlessness. · The construct of mindfulness amidst and along conceptions of rationality. · Understanding confidence: its roots and role in performance. · Mindfulness in action: the emergence of distinctive thought and behavior. · Langerian mindfulness and optimal sport performance. · Health and the psychology of possibility. Critical Mindfulness is bracing and insightful reading for undergraduate and graduate students, psychologists, psychiatrists, physicians, clinicians, neurologists, and educators within and outside positive psychology. These pages challenge the wider community of professionals to rethink their perspectives on practice—as well as their long-held tenets of living.

Defending God's Gift of Freedom by Mike Morra Book Resume:

Since the 18th century, 1000s of scholarly books have been written about Americas wars. Some of these manuscripts featured economic dynamics, others military tactics or long term strategies, still others accredited victory to the brilliance and character of generalship, or to the individual heroics in the heat of combat. Or, to a particular battle unexpectedly won. Many of these victories must be attributed to the wisdom of the socio/politics of freely elected leaders. Most all of these writings alluded the human cravings for freedom. Other than conventional history, this one of its kind book, Defending Gods Gift of Freedom, will bring to light the religious/spiritual determination of free people who have been energized to fight Americas crusades in defense of Gods gift of liberty.

Sexual Violence and Armed Conflict by Janie L. Leatherman Book Resume:

Every year, hundreds of thousands of women become victims of sexual violence in conflict zones around the world; in the Democratic Republic of Congo alone, approximately 1,100 rapes are reported each month. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the causes, consequences and responses to sexual violence in contemporary armed conflict. It explores the function and effect of wartime sexual violence and examines the conditions that make women and girls most vulnerable to these acts both before, during and after conflict. To understand the motivations of the men (and occasionally women) who perpetrate this violence, the book analyzes the role played by systemic and situational factors such as patriarchy and militarized masculinity. Difficult questions of accountability are tackled; in particular, the case of child soldiers, who often suffer a double victimization when forced to commit sexual atrocities. The book concludes by looking at strategies of prevention and protection as well as new programs being set up on the ground to support the rehabilitation of survivors and their communities. Sexual violence in war has long been a taboo subject but, as this book shows, new and courageous steps are at last being taken Ð at both local and international level - to end what has been called the “greatest silence in history”.

The Underground Railroad by William Still Book Resume:

While working for the Underground Railroad and helped escaped slaves to safety, William Still kept meticulous records. These notes originally were used to help reconnect families and document history, but Still later used these records to create The Underground Railroad, telling the stories of the disenfranchised. Said to have helped nearly eight-hundred slaves, Still depicts their stories of heartbreak, narrow escapes, and oppression. Not only was Still a conductor of the Underground Railroad, but also was the child of a woman who braved the unknown, fought for her own freedom, and escaped life as a slave. The Underground Railroad uses first-hand accounts of the harsh conditions of slavery, and the lengths slaves had to go to for freedom. The Underground Railroad by William Still is a work of historical nonfiction meant for all. The collection of vivid, personal stories serves as an excellent education of antebellum America directly from one of its witnesses. The underground railroad was among the most selfless acts of activism, fueled by the kindness and compassion by Americans who wanted the best for their peers. Still’s honest and raw gives readers direct access to the experiences of those who used the system and reclaimed their freedom. Witness the close encounters, joyful reunions, and incredible bravery of the slaves and activists that defended the American right of freedom for all. Brought back into the light and revived with easy-to-read print, and an eye-catching design, William Still’sThe Underground Railroad is a reminder of both a heinous injustice of America’s past and the triumph of the activism and bravery that overcame it.

In an age that grants plausibility to every idea and certainty to none... WHAT CAN YOU BELIEVE? If you've ever wandered a mall, browsed a bookstore, or explored the Internet, you've seen the evidence: We live in a culture desperately searching for meaning. Like the ancient Greeks, we are haunted by questions. Where did this world come from? Why am I here? As individuals and as a society, we are restless, longing for something, or someone, to believe in. There are perhaps millions of potential answers—but only one truth that wholly explains, resolves, and offers hope for the plight of man. Of this life-giving message, Peter, the disciple of Jesus Christ, wrote: "Even angels long to look into these things." Within these pages, author Alistair Begg explores "these things" more fully, offering fresh insights into the mystery and power of the gospel account and presenting a convincing argument to all those seeking answers to the meaning of life.

The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson Book Resume:

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this beautifully written masterwork, the Pulitzer Prize–winnner and bestselling author of Caste chronicles one of the great untold stories of American history: the decades-long migration of black citizens who fled the South for northern and western cities, in search of a better life. NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD WINNER From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves. With stunning historical detail, Wilkerson tells this story through the lives of three unique individuals: Ida Mae Gladney, who in 1937 left sharecropping and prejudice in Mississippi for Chicago, where she achieved quiet blue-collar success and, in old age, voted for Barack Obama when he ran for an Illinois Senate seat; sharp and quick-tempered George Starling, who in 1945 fled Florida for Harlem, where he endangered his job fighting for civil rights, saw his family fall, and finally found peace in God; and Robert Foster, who left Louisiana in 1953 to pursue a medical career, the personal physician to Ray Charles as part of a glitteringly successful medical career, which allowed him to purchase a grand home where he often threw exuberant parties. Wilkerson brilliantly captures their first treacherous and exhausting cross-country trips by car and train and their new lives in colonies that grew into ghettos, as well as how they changed these cities with southern food, faith, and culture and improved them with discipline, drive, and hard work. Both a riveting microcosm and a major assessment, The Warmth of Other Suns is a bold, remarkable, and riveting work, a superb account of an “unrecognized immigration” within our own land. Through the breadth of its narrative, the beauty of the writing, the depth of its research, and the fullness of the people and lives portrayed herein, this book is destined to become a classic. Protecting the right to freedom of expression under the European Convention on Human Rights by Bychawska-Siniarska, Dominika Book Resume:

European Convention on Human Rights – Article 10 – Freedom of expression 1. Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. This right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority and regardless of frontiers. This article shall not prevent States from requiring the licensing of broadcasting, television or cinema enterprises. 2. The exercise of these freedoms, since it carries with it duties and responsibilities, may be subject to such formalities, conditions, restrictions or penalties as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society, in the interests of national security, territorial integrity or public safety, for the prevention of disorder or crime, for the protection of health or morals, for the protection of the reputation or rights of others, for preventing the disclosure of information received in confidence, or for maintaining the authority and impartiality of the judiciary. In the context of an effective democracy and respect for human rights mentioned in the Preamble to the European Convention on Human Rights, freedom of expression is not only important in its own right, but it also plays a central part in the protection of other rights under the Convention. Without a broad guarantee of the right to freedom of expression protected by independent and impartial courts, there is no free country, there is no democracy. This general proposition is undeniable. This handbook is a practical tool for legal professionals from Council of Europe member states who wish to strengthen their skills in applying the European Convention on Human Rights and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights in their daily work.

You Were Born for This by Bruce Wilkinson Book Resume:

His New York Times phenomenon The Prayer of Jabez changed how millions pray. Now Bruce Wilkinson wants to change what they do next. Anyone can do a good deed, but some good works can only happen by an act of God. Around the world these acts are called miracles–not that even religious people expect to see one any time soon. But what would happen if millions of ordinary people walked out each morning expecting God to deliver a miracle through them to a person in need? You Were Born for This starts with the dramatic premise that everyone at all times is in need of a miracle, and that God is ready to meet those needs supernaturally through ordinary people who are willing to learn the "protocol of heaven." In the straightforward, story-driven, highly motivating style for which he is known, Wilkinson describes how anyone can be a 'Delivery Guy' from heaven in such universally significant arenas of life as finances, practical help, relationships, purpose and spiritual growth. You Were Born for This will change how you see your world and show you what you can expect God to do through you to meet real needs. You will master seven simple tools of service, and come to say with confidence, "I want to deliver a supernatural gift from God to someone in need today–and I expect to!"

Walter Shurden is a longtime champion of the role of freedom in the Baptist tradition. Recognizing that freedom alone does not tell the whole story, Shurden also speaks to and from other cardinal Baptist convictions. Some of the materials in this volume appear for the first time and consist of speeches and addresses that Shurden has made at crucial points in recent Baptist life in America in the latter part of the twentieth century. Especially concerned with the fundamentalist takeover of the Southern Baptist Convention and the resulting lack of emphasis on historic Baptist principles, Shurden addresses directly and indirectly the SBC controversy in several of the chapters of this book. More, Shurden emphasizes what makes Baptists distinctive in American religious life.

Communities in Action by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine,Health and Medicine Division,Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice,Committee on Community-Based Solutions to Promote Health Equity in the United States Book Resume:

In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

The results provide strong evidence of the economic relevance of nonmaterial values, and also prompt a new view of the stochastic elements in the business cycles.

Thanks to the inroads of IMFism and the "war on terror," America has lost much of the soft power it enjoyed in Asia during the early 1990s. The winners, by default, are some of the world's most undemocratic development models, such as Sino-globalism. "Asian values" took a hard blow from the Asian Crash, but have returned in this even more virulent form. The West is left sitting on the sidelines of a distinctly Asian contest of development with or without freedom. Development Without Freedom explores this crucial trial-by-development, which will define the politics of globalization for decades to come.

iGen by Jean M. Twenge Book Resume:

As seen in Time, USA TODAY, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, and on CBS This Morning, BBC, PBS, CNN, and NPR, iGen is crucial reading to understand how the children, teens, and young adults born in the mid-1990s and later are vastly different from their Millennial predecessors, and from any other generation. With generational divides wider than ever, parents, educators, and employers have an urgent need to understand today’s rising generation of teens and young adults. Born in the mid-1990s up to the mid-2000s, iGen is the first generation to spend their entire adolescence in the age of the smartphone. With social media and texting replacing other activities, iGen spends less time with their friends in person—perhaps contributing to their unprecedented levels of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. But technology is not the only thing that makes iGen distinct from every generation before them; they are also different in how they spend their time, how they behave, and in their attitudes toward religion, sexuality, and politics. They socialize in completely new ways, reject once sacred social taboos, and want different things from their lives and careers. More than previous generations, they are obsessed with safety, focused on tolerance, and have no patience for inequality. With the first members of iGen just graduating from college, we all need to understand them: friends and family need to look out for them; businesses must figure out how to recruit them and sell to them; colleges and universities must know how to educate and guide them. And members of iGen also need to understand themselves as they communicate with their elders and explain their views to their older peers. Because where iGen goes, so goes our nation—and the world.

R.J. Rummel: An Assessment of His Many Contributions by Nils Petter Gleditsch Book Resume:

This book is open access under a CC BY license. The book provides a critical and constructive assessment of the many contributions to social science and politics made by Professor R. J. Rummel. Rummel was a prolific writer and an important teacher and mentor to a number of people who in turn have made their mark on the profession. His work has always been controversial. But after the end of the Cold War, his views on genocide and the democratic peace in particular have gained wide recognition in the profession. He was also a pioneer in the use of statistical methods in international relations. His work in not easily classified in the traditional categories of international relations research (realism, idealism, and constructivism). He was by no means a pacifist and his views on the US-Soviet arms race led him to be classified as a hawk. But his work on the democratic peace has become extremely influential among liberal IR scholars and peace researchers. Above all, he was a libertarian.

Exceptions in EU Copyright Law by Tito Rendas Book Resume:

Information Law Series Volume 45 In a copyright system characterised by broad and long-lasting exclusive rights, exceptions provide a vital counterweight, especially in times of rampant technological change. The EU’s controversial InfoSoc Directive – now two decades old – lists exceptions in which an unauthorised user will not have infringed the rightholder’s copyright. To reform or not to reform this legal framework – that is the question considered in great depth in this book, providing detailed theoretical and normative analysis of the Directive, the national and CJEU case law arising from it, and meticulously thought-out proposals for change. By breaking down the concepts of ‘flexibility’ and ‘legal certainty’ into a set of policy objectives and assessment criteria, the author thoroughly examines such core aspects of the framework as the following: the justifications for exceptions, e.g., safeguarding the fundamental rights of users; the regimes established in legislation and case law for key exceptions; the need to promote technological development; the importance of avoiding re-fragmentation caused by uncoordinated national legislative responses to technological changes; the legal status of digital technologies that rely on unauthorised uses of copyright-protected works; and the pros and cons of importing a fair use standard modelled after that of the United States. In an invaluable concluding chapter, the author puts forward a set of reform proposals, articulating their advantages and responding to potential objections. In doing so, the chapter also identifies, synthesises and critically examines the various proposals that have been advanced in the academic literature. In its decisive contribution to the debate around the InfoSoc Directive and the rules that guide its implementation, interpretation, and application, this book isolates the contentious structural features of the framework and examines them in a critical fashion. The author’s systematised review of scholarly and policymaking proposals for increasing flexibility and legal certainty in EU copyright law will be welcomed by practitioners in intellectual property law and other areas of economic law, as well as by interested policymakers and scholars.

What sets Rock Retirement apart is its holistic approach to helping people take back control and act intentionally towards the life they want. It addresses the fears, hopes, and dreams that people have about retirement, goes way beyond the numbers, and shows them how to balance living well today and tomorrow.

God’s Intelligent Design for Planet Earth by Mike Morra Book Resume:

This book is about God the Creator of all; from nothingness to beyond the Multiverse, from cosmic darkness to spiritual light, while surrounding all of His Creation with universal beauty. Godless scholars claim their discoveries as the engine of historic progress, but in truth it has been the Divine revelation of ideas that have propelled the evolution of Mankind. Often, we are discovering that the greatest of human genius has been wrong in their attempts to explain the physical basics of existence. Likewise, their vision of the natural world and the course of cultural/spiritual advancement have been flawed. Albert Einstein’s theories were wrong. Even he admitted that his universal constant that attempted to describe the mechanics of Outer Space was a colossal miscalculation. The philosophies of the most noteworthy of Greek intellectuals, Aristotle, Socrates, and Plato, widely taught today in academia as the pathway to truth, have failed to anticipate the Mosaic, Moral Order and God’s personal relationship with each human soul. Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling proposed a triple-helix for the DNA and he was proven wrong. Along with, the mathematical limitations posed by Isaac Newton and Rene Descartes. Galileo’s science, atomic theory, quantum physics, string theory, Darwin’s biology, Freud’s account of the psyche, and many other intellectual gaffes made throughout the Eras have been proven erroneous and/or partial truths. Has the acquisition of knowledge been a continuous, rational phenomenon leading to truth? Or, will godless reasoning always be imperfect to grasp the Divine complexities of the cosmos? Why can’t rational mathematics explain the irrational numbers, such as the Fibonacci series, the Golden Proportion, and the triangular ratios of sine, cosine, and hypotenuse? Has God’s wisdom been revealing to scholars the rudiments of His Creation throughout the Eras or have the godless, arrogant intellectuals been discovering the created fundamentals of the cosmos, as revealed through time by a Higher Power? Has the issuing of the Nobel Prize been sacrosanct or simply the rewarding of scientific mistakes and limitations via political/cultural correctness? Only God and the message of Jesus have perfectly survived to inspire the ideational and spiritual Ages.

This book combines more than 45 years of the author’s riding experiences with data collected over five years of systematic observation and extensive ethnographic interviews with over 200 male and female riders. Much has been written about hardcore bikers, but there has been little scholarly research on the much larger segment of the population more aptly called motorcycle enthusiasts. This book focuses on them—the hard working plumbers, truck drivers, and other blue collar workers as well as the white collar executives, doctors and other professionals who are mostly married, have mortgages, pay their bills, obey the law, and on weekends and holidays participate in a favorite pastime, riding motorcycles.

Deep Space Propulsion by K. F. Long Book Resume:

The technology of the next few decades could possibly allow us to explore with robotic probes the closest stars outside our Solar System, and maybe even observe some of the recently discovered planets circling these stars. This book looks at the reasons for exploring our stellar neighbors and at the technologies we are developing to build space probes that can traverse the enormous distances between the stars. In order to reach the nearest stars, we must first develop a propulsion technology that would take our robotic probes there in a reasonable time. Such propulsion technology has radically different requirements from conventional chemical rockets, because of the enormous distances that must be crossed. Surprisingly, many propulsion schemes for interstellar travel have been suggested and await only practical engineering solutions and the political will to make them a reality. This is a result of the tremendous advances in astrophysics that have been made in recent decades and the perseverance and imagination of tenacious theoretical physicists. This book explores these different propulsion schemes – all based on current physics – and the challenges they present to physicists, engineers, and space exploration entrepreneurs. This book will be helpful to anyone who really wants to understand the principles behind and likely future course of interstellar travel and who wants to recognizes the distinctions between pure fantasy (such as Star Trek’s ‘warp drive’) and methods that are grounded in real physics and offer practical technological solutions for exploring the stars in the decades to come.
