“The Cleaner has it all: exotic locales, James Bondian derring-do, and ingenious plot twists that will keep you sweating all the way ’til the end.“—Tess Gerritsen Meet Jonathan Quinn: a freelance operative with a take-no-prisoners style and the heart of a loner. His job? Professional “cleaner.” Nothing too violent, just disposing of bodies, doing a little cleanup if necessary. But Quinn’s latest assignment is about to change everything, igniting a harrowing journey of violence, betrayal, and revenge. The job seemed simple enough: investigating a suspicious case of arson. But when a dead body turns up where it doesn’t belong—and Quinn’s handlers turn strangely silent—he knows he’s in over his head. Quinn’s only hope may be Orlando, a woman from his past who could hold the key to solving the case. Suddenly the two are prying into old crimes, struggling to stay alive long enough to unbury the truth. But as the hunt intensifies, Quinn is stunned by what he uncovers: a brilliantly orchestrated conspiracy—with an almost unimaginable goal. Praise for The Cleaner “Battles is a compelling new voice in the thriller genre. The Cleaner combines the best elements of Lee Child, John le Carré and Robert Ludlum. . . . A stellar debut.“—Sheldon Siegel “A brilliant and heart-pounding thriller.”—Jeffery Deaver “A tightly written page-turner.”—Booklist

Bertram and his three friends have formed a small gang of thieves called The Ravens. He lives alone with his mom, who works as a waitress. One day, Bertram steals an expensive "Schott Made in USA" leather jacket from a restaurant, which will have fatal consequences, and not just for Bertram. Rolando Benito, an investigator at the Police Complaints Authority, and his colleague are sent out to question two police officers. A prison guard has jumped out of his window on the fourth floor, just as the two officers were pulling up, after a noise complaint had been made for loud music coming out of his apartment. As the prison guard is the father of Rolando grandchild's school friend, he hears a rumour that a prisoner has died in the prison the man worked in, and that the prison guard had felt threated and persecuted. Is it in fact not a suicide case at all? Anne Larsen, a journalist for TV2 East Jutland, is also on the case. Everyone seems to be connected to one prisoner, the murderer Patrick Asp, who killed his own infant baby and is a prisoner in the jail the prison guard worked at. The Trauma Cleaner by Sarah Krasnostein Book Resume:

Winner of the Victorian Prize for Literature, Sarah Krasnostein’s The Trauma Cleaner: One Woman’s Extraordinary Life in the Business of Death, Decay, and Disaster is the fascinating biography of one of the people responsible for tidying up homes in the wake of natural—and unnatural—catastrophes and fatalities. Homicides and suicides, fires and floods, hoarders and addicts. When properties are damaged or neglected, it falls to Sandra Pankhurst, founder of Specialized Trauma Cleaning (STC) Services Pty. Ltd. to sift through the ashes or sweep up the mess of a person’s life or death. Her clients include law enforcement, real estate agents, executors of deceased estates, and charitable organizations representing victimized, mentally ill, elderly, and physically disabled people. In houses and buildings that have fallen into disrepair, Sandra airs out residents’ smells, throws out their weird porn, their photos, their letters, the last traces of their DNA entombed in soaps and toothbrushes. The remnants and mementoes of these people’s lives resonate with Sandra. Before she began professionally cleaning up their traumas, she experienced her own. First, as a little boy, raised in violence and excluded from the family home. Then as a husband and father, drag queen, gender reassignment patient, sex worker, small businesswoman, and trophy wife. In each role she played, all Sandra wanted to do was belong. The Trauma Cleaner is the extraordinary true story of an extraordinary person dedicated to making order out of chaos with compassion, revealing the common ground Sandra Pankhurst—and everyone—shares with those struck by tragedy.

The Vacuum Cleaner by Carroll Gantz Book Resume:

House cleaning has been an innate human activity forever but only since the early 19th century have mechanical devices replaced the physical labor (performed mostly by women). Mechanical carpet sweepers were replaced by manual suction cleaners, which in turn were replaced by electric vacuum cleaners in the early 20th century. Innovative inventors, who improved vacuum cleaners as electricity became commonly available, made these advances possible. Many early manufacturers failed, but some, such as Bissell, Hoover, Eureka and others, became household names as they competed for global dominance with improved features, performance and appearance. This book describes the fascinating people who made this possible, as well as the economic, cultural and technological contexts of their times. From obscure beginnings 200 years ago, vacuum cleaners have become an integral part of modern household culture.

Mimicry and Meaning: Structure and Semiotics of Biological Mimicry by Timo Maran Book Resume:

The present book analyses critically the tripartite mimicry model (consisting of the mimic, model and receiver species) and develops semiotic tools for comparative analysis. It is proposed that mimicry has a double structure where sign relations in communication are in constant interplay with ecological relations between species. Multi-constructivism and toolbox-like conceptual methods are advocated for, as these allow taking into account both the participants’ Umwelten as well as cultural meanings related to specific mimicry cases. From biosemiotic viewpoint, mimicry is a sign relation, where deceptively similar messages are perceived, interpreted and acted upon. Focusing on living subjects and their communication opens up new ways to understand mimicry. Such view helps to explain the diversity of mimicry as well as mimicry studies and treat these in a single framework. On a meta-level, a semiotic view allows critical reflection on the use of mimicry concept in modern biology. The author further discusses interpretations of mimicry in contemporary semiotics, analyses mimicry as communicative interaction, relates mimicry to iconic signs and focuses on abstract resemblances in mimicry. Theoretical discussions are illustrated with detailed excursions into practical mimicry cases in nature (brood parasitism, eyespots, myrmecomorphy, etc.). The book concludes with a conviction that mimicry should be treated in a broader semiotic-ecological context as it presumes the existence of ecological codes and other sign conventions in the ecosystem.

This is a message from the Virgin Girl: From here, I will start my life. From here, I will build a bridge, walk on it, go up to the top of the ranks that many people dream of, break all the barriers that stand in my way, and walk on it and then rise to the top and raise my head. I dream of a prosperous future a lot—one that can fill my life with joy and happiness and raise the reputation of my family. Yes, I was born to a low-income but respectable family, and I was subjected to the worst methods of persecution. I have received tempting offers from senior people in businesses about selling my beautiful body to them so they could relish it on quiet music strings and piano tones. I didn’t care about the palaces filled with bliss I couldn’t get, and I turned down all these offers and walked with a clean, pure, and flawless face to confront a bitter and difficult life. But I promised myself to strike hard at the one who hurt my family and me, who distorted my good reputation. I have a hellish internal power. I’m not going to show it right now, but I will unleash it in front of the one who thinks he can buy me with money. I lost my family, and I stayed alone and had no one in my life, but I will take revenge on the one who destroyed my life. I will raise the flag of triumph in the end. The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning by Margareta Magnusson Book Resume:

A charming, practical, and unsentimental approach to putting a home in order while reflecting on the tiny joys that make up a long life. In Sweden there is a kind of decluttering called döstädning, dö meaning “death” and städning meaning “cleaning.” This surprising and invigorating process of clearing out unnecessary belongings can be undertaken at any age or life stage but should be done sooner than later, before others have to do it for you. In The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, artist Margareta Magnusson, with Scandinavian humor and wisdom, instructs readers to embrace minimalism. Her radical and joyous method for putting things in order helps families broach sensitive conversations, and makes the process uplifting rather than overwhelming. Margareta suggests which possessions you can easily get rid of (unworn clothes, unwanted presents, more plates than you’d ever use) and which you might want to keep (photographs, love letters, a few of your children’s art projects). Digging into her late husband’s tool shed, and her own secret drawer of vices, Margareta introduces an element of fun to a potentially daunting task. Along the way readers get a glimpse into her life in Sweden, and also become more comfortable with the idea of letting go.

What Does One Reef Matter?: A 15-Minute Book by Cullen Gwin Book Resume:

Janey loved the beach. She loved playing in the waves and digging in the sand. She loved swimming in the water. She loved looking at all the brightly colored fish. She loved feeding the seagulls and other birds. She also loved watching them fly. She loved everything about the beach. Everything, that is, except the reef. The coral reef she didn't like. She didn't like it at all. When she got to the beach, Janey ran out across the sand. She quickly helped her mother spread out the blanket. They set up the umbrella so her mother could have some shade. Then Janey headed for the water. In her hands, Janey had a soda. She drank it while she headed out into the water. Then she decided to swim. But it was too far to go back to the beach to throw her soda away. So Janey decided to just dump the rest of it into the ocean. Then she could throw the can back. “Hey, maybe the coral reef hates soda,” she thought to herself. “Maybe it will kill the coral to have soda dumped on it.” Janey went over to the coral. When no one was looking, she dumped her soda into the water. At least she thought no one was looking. But Janey's mother saw her do it. “Janey, come here, please,” her mother yelled. Janey climbed out of the water. She went to where her mother was sitting and she stood by the blanket. “I saw you dump soda in the water,” her mother said. “I just wanted to kill the reef,” Janey said quietly. She hung her head. “Why would you want to kill the reef?” her mother asked. “Because it cuts my feet when I go swimming,” Janey answered. “Besides,” she said. “What would one reef matter? Find out the role one reef plays in the ecosystem and the life of the ocean. Ages 7 and up Educational Versions include exercises designed to meet Common Core standards. Deception by Robert W. Mitchell,Nicholas S. Thompson Book Resume:

Mitchell and Thompson have compiled the first interdisciplinary study of deception and its manifestations in a variety of animal species. Deception is unique in that it presents detailed explorations of the broadest array of deceptive behavior, ranging from deceptive signaling in fireflies and stomatopods, to false-alarm calling by birds and foxes, to playful manipulating between people and dogs, to deceiving within intimate human relationships. It offers a historical overview of the problem of deception in related fields of animal behavior, philosophical analyses of the meaning and significance of deception in evolutionary and psychological theories, and diverse perspectives on deception—philosophical, ecological, evolutionary, ethological, developmental, psychological, anthropological, and historical. The contributions gathered herein afford scientists the opportunity to discover something about the formal properties of deception, enabling them to explore and evaluate the belief that one set of descriptive and perhaps explanatory structures is suitable for both biological and psychological phenomena.

Chance that Louisiana's inmates are being murdered at an alarming rate by medical professionals in order to harvest their organs and sold to the highest bidder... all perpetuated by national lawmakers. Risk the possibility that Hurricane Katrina was a hoax; a mass murder to gain money, power and political strongholds nationwide. Now picture a young thirty-five year old ex-convict (John Wright) freshly released from the infamous Angola. Nicknamed Jon Jon, he is bent on doing the right thing, but is trapped in between two vicious assassins, and is the cause of the two meeting. The Art of Being a Parasite by Claude Combes Book Resume:

Parasites are a masterful work of evolutionary art. The tiny mite Histiostoma laboratorium, a parasite of Drosophila, launches itself, in an incredible display of evolutionary engineering, like a surface-to-air missile at a fruit fly far above its head. Gravid mussels such as Lampsilis ventricosa undulate excitedly as they release their parasitic larval offspring, conning greedy predators in search of a tasty meal into hosting the parasite. The Art of Being a Parasite is an extensive collection of these and other wonderful and weird stories that illuminate the ecology and evolution of interactions between species. Claude Combes illustrates what it means to be a parasite by considering every stage of its interactions, from invading to reproducing and leaving the host. An accessible and engaging follow-up to Combes's Parasitism, this book will be of interest to both scholars and nonspecialists in the fields of biodiversity, natural history, ecology, public health, and evolution.

The ecology and importance of marine parasites are discussed in the second part of the book, where contributions investigate behavioural and ecological aspects of parasitism and discuss the evolution and zoogeography of marine parasites. In addition, the economic, environmental and medical significance of these organisms is outlined, particularly their importance in aquaculture and their effects on marine mammals and birds. Written by an international team of contributors, the emphasis is on a thorough grounding in marine parasitology combined with reviews of novel concepts and cutting-edge research.

Natural Selection and Social Theory by Robert Trivers Book Resume:

Robert Trivers is a pioneering figure in the field of sociobiology. For Natural Selection and Social Theory, he has selected eleven of his most influential papers, including several classic papers from the early 1970s on the evolution of reciprocal altruism, parent-offspring conflicts, and asymmetry in sexual selection, which helped to establish the centrality of sociobiology, as well as some of his later work on deceit in signalling, sex antagonistic genes, and imprinting. Trivers introduces each paper, setting them in their contemporary context, and critically evaluating them in the light of subsequent work and further developments. The result is a unique portrait of the intellectual development of sociobiology, with valuable insights for evolutionary biology, anthropology, and psychology.
