Rimbaud by Book Resume:

The enfant terrible of French letters, Jean-Nicholas-Arthur Rimbaud (1854-91) was a defiant and precocious youth who wrote some of the most remarkable prose and poetry of the nineteenth century, all before leaving the world of verse by the age of twenty-one. More than a century after his death, the young rebel-poet continues to appeal to modern readers as much for his turbulent life as for his poetry; his stormy affair with fellow poet Paul Verlaine and his nomadic adventures in eastern Africa are as iconic as his hallucinatory poems and symbolist prose. The first translation of the poet's complete works when it was published in 1966, Rimbaud: Complete Works, Selected Letters introduced a new generation of Americans to the alienated genius—among them the Doors's lead singer Jim Morrison, who wrote to translator Wallace Fowlie to thank him for rendering the poems accessible to those who "don't read French that easily." Forty years later, the book remains the only side-by-side bilingual edition of Rimbaud's complete poetic works. Thoroughly revising Fowlie's edition, Seth Whidden has made changes on virtually every page, correcting errors, reordering poems, adding previously omitted versions of poems and some letters, and updating the text to reflect current scholarship; left in place are Fowlie's literal and respectful translations of Rimbaud's complex and nontraditional verse. Whidden also provides a foreword that considers the heritage of Fowlie's edition and adds a bibliography that acknowledges relevant books that have appeared since the original publication. On its fortieth anniversary, Rimbaud remains the most authoritative—and now, completely up-to-date—edition of the young master's entire poetic ouvre.

Competition [Pdf/ePub] eBook ISBN-10:

Competition by James Case Book Resume:

The Mathematical Theory of Games Sheds Light On A Wide Range of Competitive Activities What do chess-playing computer programs, biological evolution, competitive sports, gambling, alternative voting systems, public auctions, corporate globalization, and class warfare have in common? All are manifestations of a new paradigm in scientific thinking, which James Case calls "the emerging science of competition." Drawing in part on the pioneering work of mathematicians such as John von Neumann, John Nash (of A Beautiful Mind fame), and Robert Axelrod, Case explores the common game-theoretical strands that tie these seemingly unrelated fields together, showing how each can be better understood in the shared light of the others. Not since James Gleick's bestselling book Chaos brought widespread public attention to the new sciences of chaos and complexity has a general-interest science book served such an eye-opening purpose. Competition will appeal to a wide range of readers, from policy wonks and futurologists to former jocks and other ordinary citizens seeking to make sense of a host of novel—and frequently controversial—issues.

She might indeed be Deborah, a woman who had taken her husband's love and twisted it into something foul and frightening. That would be bad enough. Because if she wasn't Deborah, then Nicholas had murdered his wife—and she was in love with a man who had blood on his hands.

This New York Times–bestselling memoir about an African American man’s struggles and triumphs is “heartrending and beautiful” (Junot Diaz Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao). A Today Show Book Club selection, Raising Fences tells the story of a man whose youth was spent committing petty crimes, experimenting with sex, and developing a mortal fear of police. Like many young black men, Michael Datcher’s childhood was marked by the gaping hole left by an absent father. Out of that absence grew the desire to fulfill a dream that seemed almost a fantasy: to leave the streets behind, build a family, and become what he had wanted so badly—a good father. Moving past his self-destructive habits and taking responsibility for his mistakes wasn’t easy. Datcher’s journey nearly brought him to his breaking point—where he faced the threat of becoming what he feared most. “Datcher’s voice is clear, bold, daring, and welcome.” —Junot Diaz, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao “Honest, brisk and ultimately very moving . . . The Cryptogram: A Novel by James de Mille Book Resume:

Chetwynde Castle was a large baronial mansion, belonging to the Plantagenet period, and situated in Monmouthshire. It was a grand old place, with dark towers, and turrets, and gloomy walls surmounted with battlements, half of which had long since tumbled down, while the other half seemed tottering to ruin. That menacing ruin was on one side of the structure concealed beneath a growth of ivy, which contrasted the dark green of its leaves with the sombre hue of the ancient stones. Time with its defacing fingers had only lent additional grandeur to this venerable pile. As it rose there --"standing with half its battlements alone, and with five hundred years of ivy grown"--its picturesque magnificence and its air of hoar antiquity made it one of the noblest monuments of the past which England could show. All its surroundings were in keeping with the central object. Here were no neat paths, no well-kept avenues, no trim lawns. On the contrary, every thing bore the unmistakable marks of neglect and decay; the walks were overgrown, the terraces dilapidated, and the rose pleasaunce had degenerated into a tangled mass of bushes and briers. It seemed as though the whole domain were about to revert into its original state of nature; and every thing spoke either of the absence of a master, or else of something more important still--the absence of money. The castle stood on slightly elevated ground; and from its gray stone ivy-covered portal so magnificent was the view that the most careless observer would be attracted by it, and stand wonder-struck at the beauty of the scene, till he forgot in the glories of nature the deficiencies of art. Below, and not far away, flowed the silvery Wye, most charming of English streams, winding tortuously through fertile meadows and wooded copses; farther off lay fruitful vales and rolling hills; while in the distance the prospect was bounded by the giant forms of the Welsh mountains. At the moment when this story opens these beauties were but faintly visible through the fast-fading twilight of a summer evening; the shadows were rapidly deepening; and the only signs of life about the place appeared where from some of the windows at the eastern end faint rays of light stole out into the gloom.

Weaved throughout is the vivid, emotional history of adoption in the UK. The Lowdown on China’s Higher Education by Martin Wolff Book Resume:

“Obviously, you are not chanting the exultations of China which many of my country people are used to listening to.” A Chinese scholar recognizes that this book is not a further attempt to curry favor with China by tickling its leaders’ ears. This book examines what is right and the truth about what is wrong with English language education in Chinese colleges and universities. As our Chinese colleague further states, “Most Chinese are learning English like one learning swimming ashore.” We have been writing about these shortcomings for ten years. It arises because administrators posted to their positions due to party affiliation and good standing, are basically ignorant of administration and educational matters. “The VIPs of EEC believe that they know, while they don’t, what are under their supervision; the professionals of EEC believe that what they are doing academically is helpful while it’s not. The two types are making the common non-professional people believe that they are knowingly reliable while they are not. . . . The educated, as well as the illiterate, do not know what to do and what not to do, what is correct and what is wrong, what is worthy and what is not, etc. The weakness, from the historical perspective, is also a consequence of modern Chinese history whose knowledge most Chinese people are poor at but reluctant to admit.” This book could not be published within China due to its truthfulness.

Author: Riantee Lydia Rand
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
File Size: 1066 KB
File Format: Pdf
Read Count: 8093430

The Many Faces of Subud by Riantee Lydia Rand Book Resume:

Subud is a direct and spontaneous spiritual experience that allows people to receive a contact with the Great Life Force. It re-awakens their inner feeling and puts them in touch with their own guidance, eventually bringing to the surface their true nature which was before obstructed and cluttered with erroneous beliefs, ancestral patterns of behavior, culture, education and their family malfunctions. Many have found a deeper understanding of their own religious beliefs from the evidence they receive for themselves. Others have come to actualize their true talent and work. There are Subud groups in eighty countries, bringing together harmoniously people of many different religious and ethnic backgrounds. The spiritual practice, or latihan, arises from within. It is a natural process that occurs without effort or study. This book is the result of the collaborative effort of three women who have practiced the latihan of Subud for decades. It compiles testimonies of Subud members from all over the world, on different topics. Each chapter begins with a short account of observations, experiences, receivings and dreams on the subject. People interviewed were of different age groups, social and ethnic backgrounds, some newly "opened" in Subud, some older members, some second and third generation Subud. The opening latihan - when one first receives this contact - is a ceremony of introduction into the spiritual exercise after a three-month period of inquiry referred to as the probation or investigation period. Through the latihan people renew their contact with the power of God and become aware of the latent powers that reside in all of humankind. The central feature of Subud is the latihankejiwaan, or inner training, which takes place for half an hour up to an hour, two or three times a week, and is practiced by men and women separately. Subud has little doctrinal teaching except for the belief in divine power and higher centers of consciousness. The implication is that people practicing the latihan align themselves with those higher centers. It is available to any person seventeen and older who has a sincere wish to worship God and wants to receive this contact. The action of the latihan within each person allows the power of God to express itself spontaneously through singing, chanting, shouting, moving, dancing, crying, laughing, etc. Subud's founder, Bapak Muhammad Subuh, explains that in this way, when in the latihan we make a complete surrender to the Power of God (or the Great Life Force), we can receive the education of our inner selves, free from interference by our minds and hearts and according to our own individual needs. Participants have often reported strong feelings of rapture and release, psychological and physical healing. During latihan, one lets go of thoughts and emotions in order to follow what surfaces: those movements and sounds that spontaneously arise from deep within. It is a form of cleansing which allows the worship of God to become stronger and less obstructed, a training that lets individuals get in touch, develop and trust their inner guidance, enabling the complete self to emerge through an action that comes from beyond the thinking and the will.

I hope you will join me in this humorous, rocky, and unpredictable journey to happiness. Learn how Tom and Julie, thrown together repeatedly at the most inopportune times and often under the worst possible circumstances, still somehow find love. And even more to their surprise, they find that they are exactly the person designated to fill each other’s gaping emotional void—selected in a way even more surprising and unexpected than their implausible relationship.

This set contains all four books of the True Girl Fiction series: Just Call Me Kate, T is for Antonia, Yuzi's False Alarm, and Danika's Totally Terrible Loss. In Just Call Me Kate, sixth-grader Kate Harding has bigger problems than trying to get her parents to stop call her "Katie." She has a major crush on her older brother's best friend: Zachary Donaldson. In a moment of insanity, she dares to write his name on the bathroom wall in eight-inch high pencil letters. It doesn't take Principal Butter long to match the handwriting to the doodling on her book covers. Kate is sent to detention where she meets up with three new friends who decide to become the True Girl Club. Her case of boy craziness is doused with some good advice from her new friends. In T is for Antonia, Toni Diaz has a major problem. She's faster, stronger, and taller than most of the boys in her 6th grade class. Doesn't sound like a problem? Think again! She can't understand why God made her both the best athlete in her class and a girl! She wants to play for the Rutherford B. Hayes middle school football team, but school rules. . . and her parents. . . won't allow it. Toni decides to do it anyway. When dressing like a boy to pose for tryouts lands her in detention, she meets the founder of the True Girl Club. The club's crazy assignments help her learn that the coolest person she can be is. . . herself! In Yuzi's False Alarm, Yuzi Ukachi has every right to be mad. Because of her dad's job, their family has moved all over the place, so it's always been tough to make friends. And now his job has landed Yuzi in quite possibly the smallest town on the planet: Marion, Ohio—the Popcorn Capital of the World. Her mom volunteered her to wear a totally embarrassing corncob costume to the Popcorn Festival, and at school she ends up in detention for something she definitely did not do! When she opens up her heart to the three girls she meets in detention, she's invited into the True Girl Club. The club's adventures teach her that revenge isn't always the sweetest end to a story. In Danika's Totally Terrible Loss, Danika McAllister has everything a 12-year-old girl could want including a seat at the popular girls' table at lunch and a shot at winning the Miss Teeny Pop crown! But the pressure of her fake, popular personality is building. She ends up exploding and tossing her mom's famous Purple Glurp dessert. It accidentally hits her lunch lady in the head and now she's in big trouble. Not only is she headed to detention, but her dreams of the Teeny Pop crown are in trouble. She learns that she needs a new circle of friends so she can be the real Danika. When her true personality emerges, she discovers that she's not a follower at all. . .and the adventures of the True Girl Club begin.

My House Renovated One Room At a Time by Paulie Rogers Book Resume:

"Exhausted from the whirlwind of wedding activities, we stood in front of our antiquated old house, staring at the grandeur of it. I took in the intricate carved workmanship etched in the solid wood front door, the detailed front porch with it's trims and spindled railings. The romantic gabbled windows that jutted out from tall majestic roof lines.... my husband on the other hand, saw the rot that was causing the porch about to fall away from the house, the wood shingles that had let loose, the warped door that wouldn't quite shut properly and the old windows that were cracked and single paned. This was our house that we were about to make into our home." Remodeling isn't easy. It can be painstakingly hard work. And once you start, where does it end....? In this unique Bible Study, Paulie Rogers takes the reader on a journey of self-restoration with Jesus, while sharing examples of living in a farmhouse, that is in dire need of it's own restoration, one room at a time. And when the project is finished, our joy is complete.
