German E-boats 1939–45 by Book Resume:

By the outbreak of World War II, Germany had done much to replace the Kaiser's High Seas Fleet, which was scuttled following their surrender at the end of World War I. Forced to build anew, the Kriegsmarine possessed some of the most technically advanced warships in existence. Although the heavy units of the fleet were too small in number to pose much of a threat, Germany was particularly well served by her Navy's smaller vessels, in particular the U-Boats and the S-Boats. Known to the allies as the E-Boats ('Enemy'), they performed sterling duties in the Black Sea and English Channel, where they became a particular scourge.

The Power of Unfair Advantage

The Power of Unfair Advantage [Pdf/ePub] eBook ISBN-10:
Author: John L. Nesheim
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
File Size: 933 KB
File Format: Pdf

The Power of Unfair Advantage by John L. Nesheim Book Resume:

A Silicon Valley veteran and author of the bestseller High Tech Start Up reveals the nature of unfair advantage -- that holy grail for every company, the mysterious quality that separates successful businesses from the nine out of ten that fail -- and then shows how to create an unfair advantage, build it into a business plan, and use it to maximum effect. Nesheim's first book, originally self-published during Silicon Valley's wild west days in the 1990s, quickly moved from underground hit to business bestseller. He witnessed the incredible highs and lows of the Internet bubble, and he got an intimate look at why some companies weathered the storm while others went under. Now, in The Power of Unfair Advantage, Nesheim shows you how to bring the pioneer spirit to your new enterprise -- whether you are starting a new company or trying to breathe new life into an old dog. Unfair advantage is an enduring but often overlooked dynamic and a crucial aspect of any successful business endeavor. To show you how to attain unfair advantage over your competitors, he begins with a clear model: Outsource everything you are not good at, concentrate on those things that can be differentiated, and strive for a unique, consistent difference that cannot be copied. Integrating these maxims with other essential elements, he demonstrates, with dozens of case studies, how to orchestrate unfair advantage through marketing, sales, engineering, and operations. Unfair advantage can take many forms. Pager maker RIM rocketed to the top of the mobile wireless email market with Blackberry by employing an unfair advantage that it alone possessed -- pager technology and pager infrastructure. Alternately, an unfair advantage can come from a unique relationship with a strategic alliance partner, as when Flextronics pulled Handspring out of a life-threatening crisis. The Power of Unfair Advantage is an essential handbook for every manager who is responsible for introducing a new product or service and every entrepreneur and would-be who plans to start a company. Unfair advantage is here to stay -- learn how to lasso its power, rise above the competition, and build a flourishing, long-lasting business.

Monograph of the Gonostomatidae and Kahliellidae (Ciliophora, Hypotricha)

Monograph of the Gonostomatidae and Kahliellidae (Ciliophora, Hypotricha) [Pdf/ePub] eBook ISBN-10:
Author: Helmut Berger
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
File Size: 1227 KB
File Format: Pdf
Read Count: 7324441

Monograph of the Gonostomatidae and Kahliellidae (Ciliophora, Hypotricha) by Helmut Berger Book Resume:

The present monograph is the fourth of six volumes which review the Hypotricha, a major group of the spirotrichs. The book is about the Gonostomatidae, the Kahliellidae, and some taxa of unknown position in the hypotrichs. Gonostomum was previously misclassified in the Oxytrichidae because its type species Gonostomum affine has basically an 18-cirri pattern, which is dominant in the oxytrichids. A new hypothesis, considering also molecular data, postulates that this 18-cirri pattern evolved in the last common ancestor of the hypotrichs and therefore it appears throughout the Hypotricha tree. The simple dorsal kinety pattern, composed of only three bipolar dorsal kineties, and gene sequence analyses strongly suggest that Gonostomum branches off rather early in the phylogenetic tree. Thus, the Gonostomatidae, previously synonymised with the oxytrichids, are reactivated to include the name-bearing type genus and other genera (e.g., Paragonostomum, Wallackia, Cladotricha) which have the characteristic gonostomatid oral apparatus. The Kahliellidae are a rather vague group mainly defined via the preservation of parts of the parental infraciliature. The kahliellids preliminary comprise, besides the name-bearing type genus Kahliella, genera such as Parakahliella and its African pendant Afrokahliella or the monotypic Engelmanniella. In total 68 species distributed in 21 genera and subgenera are revised. As in the previous volumes almost all morphological, morphogenetic, molecular, faunistic, and ecological data, scattered in almost 700 papers, are compiled so that the four volumes (Oxytrichidae, Urostyloidea, Amphisiellidae and Trachelostylidae, Gonostomatidae and Kahliellida) provide a detailed insight into the biology of almost 500 species of hypotrichs. The series is an up-to-date overview about this highly interesting taxon of spirotrichous ciliates mainly addressed to taxonomists, cell biologists, ecologists, molecular biologists, and practitioners.

Potatoes [Pdf/ePub] eBook ISBN-10:
Author: Douglas Horton
Publisher: CRC Press
File Size: 513 KB
File Format: Pdf
Read Count: 3895675

Potatoes by Douglas Horton Book Resume:

Although the potato is usually thought of as a temperate-zone crop, potato growing in the tropics and subtropics is spreading rapidly. In terms of the dollar value of the crop, this edible root now ranks fourth in the developing world after rice, wheat, and maize. Nevertheless, policymakers often underrate the importance of the potato as a source of employment, income, and food or they underestimate the potential benefits from expanding potato production and use. The payoff from applied research on potato cultivation in the tropics and subtropics is high due to the large body of scientific information from developed countries. This book summarizes the principles of potato production, distribution, and use. The essential facts about the potato as a crop, a commodity, and a food are discussed as well as the issues that scientists and policymakers should consider in setting priorities for implementing and assessing the impact of potato research and extension programs. A major premise of the book is that programs aiming to increase food supplies and reduce poverty through crop improvement need to consider not only production technology but also marketing strategies and consumption patterns. Adequate planning for agricultural research and development requires an understanding of how crops are grown, marketed, and used and of what potential benefits the new technologies can yield. Hence, effective crop improvement programs need both technical and socioeconomic expertise. The administrators and others responsible for implementing these programs must concern themselves with the policies that impinge on the adoption and consequences of new production methods so that their countries may reap the full benefits of an increased and stable food supply.

A Social-Psychological Perspective on Food-Related Behavior

A Social-Psychological Perspective on Food-Related Behavior by Marta L. Axelson,David Brinberg Book Resume:

Many of the diseases which afflict people in an affluent society like the United States seem to be related to food consumption (e.g., adult-onset diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, and colon cancer). In recent years, the health-related professions have become aware that their exclusive aim of disease treatment must be expanded to include health promotion. Professionals in food and nutrition, health education, social marketing, and psychology, as well as others have become interested in finding ways to promote healthy behaviors such as appropriate food consumption patterns. To modify food-related behavior, knowledge about why people eat what they eat is required. Both biological and sociocultural factors determine people's consumption behavior. This monograph, however, examines only the sociocultural determinants of individuals' food-related behaviors within their zone of biological indifference. The sociocultural variables are divided into two major categories - sociodemographic and psychological. Sociodemographic variables are often called external variables and include income, ethnicity, age, and the like. Psychosocial variables are thought to reflect the individual's internal state, and commonly examined variables include knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes.

Enteroimmunology [Pdf/ePub] eBook ISBN-10:
Author: Dr. Charles Lewis
Publisher: Psy Press
File Size: 1906 KB
File Format: Pdf
Read Count: 2758353

Enteroimmunology by Dr. Charles Lewis Book Resume:

Enteroimmunology is the emerging field of medicine that studies the enteric immune system and microbial biome of the digestive system, and their interaction with diet, digestion, the enteric and central nervous systems and endocrine functions. It explores and elucidates how these systems affect each other, impacting health and disease. Enteroimmune disease is not limited to diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel diseases but also cause systemic and neurological diseases. Neurological diseases discussed include autism, migraine, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis, bipolar and rage disorders. The gastrointestinal mucosa is predominantly lined with enterocytes that form a continuous barrier throughout the digestive path. These cells absorb nutrients while excluding the trillions of bacteria and other microbes that inhabit the gut. Just below the enterocytes, the mucosa contains over half of the body’s immune cells. These cells effect immune activity that protect the body from infection. However, they can also promote chronic inflammation, not just in the intestines, but in any organ system of the body. This book details the physiologic functions of the digestive and immune cells; their reactions to proteins, antigens and nutrients in the diet; the role of bacterial toxins and immune mediators; and the hormones that mediate appetite, GI motility and digestion. It explores the mechanisms occurring in immune dysfunction; when the immune response, rather than protect health, promotes chronic inflammation, responsible for depression, obesity, diabetes, acne, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, migraines, fibromyalgia, IBS, osteoporosis, schizophrenia, and many other chronic inflammatory diseases. Understanding the immune system of the gut, provides insight to how these mechanisms impact both the enteric and central nervous systems. Dr. Lewis elucidates the physiology and pathophysiology of the intestinal and immune cells with clarity and humor that makes reading this book a pleasure. Enteroimmunology describes how various types of food sensitivities, including IgG antergies, which are analogous to IgE allergies, cause a wide array of chronic disease. This book explains mast cell activation syndrome, leaky gut syndrome, small bowel overgrowth, dysbiosis, metabolic syndrome and describes how to achieve long-term effective resolution of these conditions through diet. The book provides examples of a variety of conditions and the pathological processes that underlie them and then acts a guide to the tertiary treatment for the condition. There are chapters on obesity and metabolic syndrome, mood and thought disorders, fibromyalgia, autoimmune diseases, interstitial cystitis, sexual dysfunction, acne and other diseases. A chapter is dedicated to traumatic brain injury and its secondary prevention. Another chapter focuses on cancer prevention and explains the dietary factors responsible for the majority of human cancers, and provides practical, evidenced-based advice for cancer prevention. There is a chapter explaining how the mitochondria and aging, detailing of how individuals can maintain vibrant, healthy, mitochondria. There are chapters on the role of sleep disorders in enteroimmune disease, explaining the role osteoimmunity in osteoporosis and on prevention of hearing loss. Enteroimmunology is a guide to the prevention and the reversal of chronic disease by first understanding, and then using diet and nutrition to reverse the underlying causation of these diseases. Enteroimmunology explains the emerging understanding of the ecology of the gut and its relationship with diet, food and nutrition. This highly acclaimed book, now in its 3rd edition, has been extensively updated and expanded. It provides citations to National Library of Medicine PMID numbers that link to over a thousand free, full-length scientific

Columbia School Linguistics in the 21st Century by Nancy Stern,Ricardo Otheguy,Wallis Reid,Jaseleen Sackler Book Resume:

This collection is the fifth volume of selected papers to emerge from Columbia School (CS) linguistics conferences. A radically functionalist approach, CS shares with Cognitive linguistics the view that grammar is composed of form-meaning correspondences. CS views language as a symbolic tool whose structure is shaped both by its communicative function and by the characteristics of its users. The volume includes papers on methodological issues and innovative analyses on English, Spanish, and Mandarin that illustrate the value of the strict application of clearly spelled out theoretical principles to the execution of linguistic analysis. Four of the volume’s eleven papers are written in Spanish, and all papers have abstracts in both English and Spanish. An introduction highlights the theoretical and analytical premises of CS, and their differences from and similarities with cognitive-functional approaches. The collection will be of interest to researchers and laymen who aim to understand the role of language in human communication.

Due Diligence and Risk Assessment of an Alternative Investment Fund

Author: Ingrid Vancas
Publisher: Diplomica Verlag
File Size: 1209 KB
File Format: Pdf
Read Count: 5658538

Due Diligence and Risk Assessment of an Alternative Investment Fund by Ingrid Vancas Book Resume:

The aim of the book is to provide practical guidance for the investor when compiling due diligence and deciding on an investment or against it. The focus of the book lays on the risk assessment and due diligence. It captures fund's internal and external risks and the investment style specific risks. The aim is to provide sound guidance to the alternative investment fund selection. The UCITS 3 directive widens investment tools for the traditional asset managers by allowing short selling of securities and diminishing the gap between the traditional and the alternative asset management industry and attracting traditional managers to the alternative investment universe. The author concentrates on three categories: Relative Value and Market Neutral, Event Driven and Opportunistic alternative investment funds. Whilst the industry is generally categorized into certain fund types it has to be stated that every fund is different and will have different risk attributes. Within the specific categories major risks will be the same, as the exposure towards the specific underlying will be similar. Still every single fund has to be examined on its own in detail, as it will have the specific alpha generating competitive advantage. Thus the author suggests a pre-selection of the potential fund manager or the management team by analysing the team and the fund's performance first. The analysis goes through the quantitative figures and the qualities of the management team. Detailed knowledge about the strategies and its fit into the portfolio is worthless unless the investor is able to select the performing manager. Without that skill the probability of ending up with an underperforming alternative investment fund or a blow-up is huge. The analysis of the management team qualities shows behaviour patterns helping to detect management teams, which are tending towards moral hazard. Secondly, the alternative investment fund style specific risks are examined. The author gives an overview

Author: Selwyn Goldsmith
Publisher: Routledge

Designing for the Disabled: The New Paradigm by Selwyn Goldsmith Book Resume:

Selwyn Goldsmith's Designing for the Disabled has, since it was first published in 1963, been a bible for practising architects around the world. Now, as a new book with a radical new vision, comes his Designing for the Disabled: The New Paradigm. Goldsmith's new paradigm is based on the concept of architectural disability. As a version of the social model of disability, it is not exclusively the property of physically disabled people. Others who are afflicted by it include women, since men customarily get proportionately four times as many amenities in public toilets as women - and women have to queue where men do not - and those with infants in pushchairs, because normal WC facilities are invariably too small to get a pushchair and infant into. To counter architectural disability, Goldsmith's line is that the axiom for legislation action has to be 'access for everyone' - it should not just be 'access for the disabled', as it presently is with the Part M building regulation and relevant provisions of the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act. In a 40-page annex to his book he sets out the terms that a new-style Part M regulation and its Approved Document might take, one that would cover alterations to existing buildings as well as new buildings. But architects and building control officers need not, he says, wait for new a legislation to apply new practical procedures to meet the requirements of the current Part M regulation; they can, as he advises, act positively now. This is a book which will oblige architects to rethink the methodology of designing for the disabled. It is a book that no practising architect, building control officer, local planning officer or access officer can afford to be without.

In this project with the aim to make economic contribution to our Syrian guests and to make them take part in active business life, 3.800 Syrian people and 1.260 Turkish people have participated in sapling planting and vocational training. It was the primary goal of our project to plant one tree for each of 3.700.000 million Syrians who have migrated to Turkey, namely for each tree which was chopped down, and to establish emotional bond between the citizens on this country and to contribute to Green Europe Project. Another goal of our project is to contribute to sustainable employment. Within the scope of project works, we performed many field studies in different areas. In all academic studies carried out up until today, human subjects were selected generally from refugee camps and those studies remained as periodical studies. 2.560 human subjects selected for this study have been selected from among Syrians trying to live in Gaziantep and Istanbul and working within the scope of the project; this is a unique study in its field in terms of participants, same questions were asked in different periods of time within 4 years and relevant changes were observed. This study not only includes the evaluations of the Syrian beneficiaries but also reflects the views of our 1.260 citizens from Gaziantep and Kilis provinces about Syrian Refugees. We hope that our studies will contribute to ones who carries out studies about refugees and to NGOs which develop projects for them. Our study begins with an introduction which includes an overall assessment of Syrian Refugees. We have included some stories from the field between chapters. Some of them gives many information in brief and with full of emotion about the matters that we wish to tell and try to write reams of writings. Second chapter contains a determination of state and fourth chapter contains the evaluation of problems that we determined as a result of field studies in which the same questions were asked to different Syrians within 3 years. Sixth chapter explains “Wrong-Known Truths” evolved from individual judgment to social judgment within 10 years. Knowing the truth by every segment of the society of those wrongs mostly used in social conflicts will be the most realistic common ground de-conflict environment. Seventh chapter contains the contents need to be known about “3 Million Syrians –3 Million Trees” Project. Other chapters contain the outcomes of Istanbul Survey, Gaziantep-2018 (Syrian Beneficiaries) and Gaziantep-2019 Field Studies and “Our Citizens’ Perception of Syrian Refugees”. Sixteenth chapter contains the field studies carried out within the scope of Qualified Employment Project-2020. Last chapter of the book contains a return project. In all sections of the book, we explained the current conditions evenhandedly and in a way to cover all the relevant parties. The results of our survey study in which we have measured the perceptions of our citizens about Syrian refugees indicated the necessity of a vision regarding the repatriation. Large segment of the society expects the repatriation of the Syrian refugees. In our survey, only 8,6% of the participants believe that all the Syrians will return to their countries after the end of civil war in Syria and 43,1% believe that none of them will return. If they stay in Turkey, most of the participants, approximately 81,6%, object to conferring Turkish citizenship to Syrian refugees. Project outputs develop solutions not only for repatriation but also for many problems identified in problems section. “Swallows are refugee/migratory birds. They fly very fast. During the migration, hundreds of swallows are caught by the storm and die. While the swallows which healthily complete the migration process fly through the warm sky, they remember their deceased friends and scream with pain and anger. Syrians are not half as swallows. They cannot grieve for their lost lives in order not to disturb other people.” (Ahmet Ümit, Swallow Scream, p. 289-290)

The Geography of Small Firm Innovation by Grant Black Book Resume:

It has long been recognized that advances in science contribute to economic growth. While it is one thing to argue that such a relationship exists, it is quite another to establish the extent to which knowledge spills over within and between sectors of the economy. Such a research agenda faces numerous challenges. Not only must one seek measures of inputs, but a measure of output is needed as well to estimate the knowledge production function. The identification of such a measure was a compelling goal for Zvi Griliches, if not the holy grail: “The dream of getting hold of an output indicator of inventive activity is one of the strong motivating forces for economic research in this area.” (Griliches 1990, p. 1669). Jaffe (1989) made a significant contribution to estimating the knowledge production function when he established a relationship between patent activity and R&D activity at the state level. Feldman and coauthors (1994a, 1994b) added considerably to this line of research, focusing on innovation counts as the dependent variable instead of patent counts. This work was particularly important given that many innovations are never patented. Feldman’s work also differentiated by firm size and showed that knowledge spillovers from universities play a key role as sources of knowledge for small firms.

Quality of Secondary Education. A Case Study of Tripura by Sahidul Ahmed Book Resume:

The definition of quality education depends upon the subject’s perspective. For example, for the students it may stand for the facilities provided to them; for parents it may be the learning outcomes; for teachers it may be the improvement of teaching learning processes; for prospective employers it may be the nature of the output. Secondary education takes a vital part in the formation of active citizens and also plays a critical role in addressing the emerging human development concerns in countries engaged in building knowledge societies to stay connected to the process of globalization. The role of secondary education in the growth of a nation is paramount and significant, more particularly in developing countries. Secondary education is the single largest supplier of labour force in most of the developing countries, including India. In view of the relation between education and economic growth in a less developed state like India, it is not the highly sophisticated manpower but the middle level (secondary) manpower that is necessary for enhancing the economic growth. This study deals with secondary education in Tripura, India. Academicians, researchers and students who are interested in studying secondary education in general and secondary education of Tripura in particular are the target group of this book which will surely help them to understand the problem of quality secondary education in India.

Jewish Economies (Volume 1) by Simon Kuznets Book Resume:

Nobel Laureate Simon Kuznets, famous as the founder of modern empirical economics, pioneered the quantitative study of the economic history of the Jews. Yet until now his most important work on the subject was unpublished. These volumes bring to the public, for the first time, the most important work written on Jewish economic history since that of Werner Sombart a century ago. In the first volume, Kuznets uses extensive, original data to trace trends in the economic life of American Jews. He measures quantitatively for the first time the legendary economic success of American Jews and discusses the foundations of these achievements. Tracing their distinctive concentration in the professions, he exposes the causes of the extreme inequalities in American Jewish economic life. The immigrant origin of nearly all American Jews offers a unique case study in the process of assimilation that made American Jewry the ultimate American success story. This offers an ideal prelude to the second forthcoming volume, Comparative Perspectives on Jewish Migration. The volume’s editors also provide a unique perspective on Kuznets’ work. In the introduction, Weyl shows that many of Kuznets’ most influential ideas, were inspired by his study of the economic history of the Jews. Through careful analysis of shared themes, and dozens of hours of detailed interviews, Lo and Weyl reveal a new dimension of Kuznets’ thought to historical inquiry.

Homelessness and Its Consequences by Rosemarie T. Downer Book Resume:

This book explores in detail the concept of homelessness by examining the dynamics of shelter living and the financial costs in comparison to the psychological costs to the children and the family. A comparison is made with housed low-income families to highlight the fact that homelessness, outside of poverty, does play a key role in the negative outcomes of homeless children and families. Psychological well-being is defined with behavioral outcomes and self-concept while family functioning is defined with parenting dimensions, family environment and social supports. Strong recommendations are made for program implementations to provide a comprehensive response to the needs of homeless families with children.(Ph.D. dissertation, University of Maryland 1997; revised with new preface, bibliography, and index)

GeR4 Compounds and Ge(CH3) 3R Compounds up to Cyclic Alkyl Groups by Frank Glockling Book Resume:

The present volume opens the Gmelin series on organogermanium compounds, that is, those compounds containing at least one germanium-to-carbon bond. This whole series is being coordinated by Professor J. Satge of the Universite Paul Sabatier in Toulouse. Germanium is of historical interest because its existence was predicted by Newlands in 1864 and by Mendeleeff in 1871 although it was not isolated until1887 by Winkler. Mendeleeff's predictions of the properties of germanium and its compounds by comparison with what was known of the chemistry of its neighbors, silicon and tin, proved remarkably accurate and included predictions of the existence of organic derivatives GeR and of their properties. 4 Although significant applications are as yet lacking for organogermanium compounds in contrast to organo-silicon, -tin, and -lead compounds there has been considerable interest in the parallel development of its chemistry. Up to 1983 about 1500 publications have appeared on organogermanium chemistry. The material of the present series will be grouped in a similar way as for the organotin series beginning with compounds containing only one germanium atom (mononuclear com pounds) and continuing with binuclear up to polynuclear compounds. Within each group the compounds are arranged by the kind of non-carbon substituents rather than by following the usual Gmelin principle of the last position using the Gmelin system of elements.
