Restructuring Economies in Distress

Social Effects Of Structural Change In Banking [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Restructuring Economies in Distress by Vinod Thomas,Ajay Chhibber,Mansoor Dailami Book Resume:

Reviews the epidemiological, financial, and institutional implications of the increasing demand for health services in Chile. Employs an innovative simulation model to project morbidity and mortality patterns. The social and economic transformations of the past several decades have led to profound demographic and epidemiological changes in many developing countries, including Chile. As this country's population evolves toward an older age structure, the relative importance of noncommunicable diseases and injuries as leading causes of morbidity and mortality will grow relative to acute infectious diseases, increasing the demand for high-cost health services. This study examines how these demographic and health changes occurred in Chile in recent decades. It also uses an innovative simulation model that projects morbidity and mortality patterns as well as the costs of treating major noncommunicable conditions (cancer, heart disease, etc.) under two scenarios: (1) maintenance of current prevalence levels for the risk factors of these diseases, and (2) intervention by which risk factor prevalence is reduced, based on experiences in industrial countries. Recommendations focus on reforms in health care delivery and regulation, health promotion and disease protection interventions, and strategies for more efficient use of critical health care inputs and for containment of escalating health care costs. The report also discusses the relevance for middle-income countries such as Chile of the experiences and lessons of OECD countries in managing the incorporation of medical care technology and containing health care costs.

Structural Adjustment and Socio-economic Change in Sub-Saharan Africa

Social Effects Of Structural Change In Banking [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Structural Adjustment and Socio-economic Change in Sub-Saharan Africa by Peter Gibbon,Adebayo O. Olukoshi Book Resume:

This report summarises the results of work at the Nordiska Afrikainstitutet/Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) on the impact of structural adjustment implementation on the economies, states and societies of sub-Saharan Africa. It consists of two essays and an appendix listing research projects which have been/are being carried out under the auspices of NAI. The first essay raises a series of conceptual and methodological questions in the context of a presentation of some of the main empirical results obtained from extended field work carried out during the course of 1992 and 1993 in Kenya, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. The second essay presents the three main themes - private trading networks and structures, the changing political economy of land, and popular forms of social provisioning - that constitute the core of the second phase of NAI's structural adjustment research and, in so doing, provides a review of aspects of the adjustment literature.

Long-term strategies for addressing the impacts of climate change in East Asia are explored with a focus on the linkages between adaptation and mitigation taking account uncertainty about key climate variables. Distorted Time Preferences and Structural Change in the Energy Industry

Social Effects Of Structural Change In Banking [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Distorted Time Preferences and Structural Change in the Energy Industry by Christoph Heinzel Book Resume:

The present study is a slightly revised version of my PhD thesis which was accepted at the Economics Department of Dresden University of Technology in July 2008. It has a long and a short history. For it began, as suggested theme, as a fundamental evaluation of evolutionary economics for ecological economics, asking, especially, for what the two ?elds actually constitutes and, eventually, relates. In several years of unfruitful dwelling, however, neither of these two young, non-mainstream ?elds proved as constituted at a fundamental level as yet. Rather, ecological economics, founded at the end of the 1980s as an attempt to combine social and natural s- ence approaches(in particular economics and ecology) to study especially long-run environmental problems in an encompassing manner, has mainly developed into an interdisciplinary research forum on environmental-economicissues. Particularly uni?edbycertainnormativestances sharedwithinits community,it constitutes, well understood, a new discpline of its own right, distinct from economics, with its own scienti?c standards, questions, methodologies and institutions (Baumgartner ̈ and Becker 2005). Modern evolutionaryeconomicson the other hand has been a quarter of a century after its inception with Nelson and Winter (1982) still a mainly h- erogeneousendeavor, linked by a (rather amorphous) common interest in economic “evolution” and a critical stance towards neoclassical mainstream economics, with a certain strength in applied studies on industrial dynamics (Heinzel 2004, 2006).

Bank Credit in Argentina in the Aftermath of the Mexican Crisis

Social Effects Of Structural Change In Banking [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Bank Credit in Argentina in the Aftermath of the Mexican Crisis by Mr. Luis Catão Book Resume:

Liquidity in the banking sector in Argentina reached new heights in early 1996 with the sharp reflow of deposits in the aftermath of the 1995 banking crisis. Yet, this did not translate into a similar recovery of credit to the private sector. Two hypotheses have been raised to explain this mismatch. One is that credit to the private sector was supply constrained because of adverse selection mechanisms exacerbated by the crisis. An alternative hypothesis is that credit was demand constrained, as unemployment remained high and the debt stock adjustment unwound only slowly through the first half of 1996. This paper examines these hypotheses.

Feminist Economics and the World Bank

Social Effects Of Structural Change In Banking [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Feminist Economics and the World Bank by Edith Kuiper,Drucilla Barker Book Resume:

The past decade has witnessed a paradigm shift at the World Bank from a focus on structural adjustment to a focus on poverty reduction. As evidenced by the Bank’s 2001 report, Engendering Development: Through Rights, Resource and Voice, an increased attention to gender issues has been an important part of this process. This book brings together a range of responses from feminist economists and other social researchers on the issues raised in this report. With contributions from highly esteemed scholars such as Eudine Barriteau, Diane Elson, Gale Summerfield, and Zafiris Tzannatos, this anthology critically examines the relationships between gender, growth, development, and the World Bank by: developing a history of the World Bank’s perspectives on gender empirically evaluating the impacts of the Banks’ policies on three different regions of the world exploring the ideological and methodological commitments of the report from a variety of feminist and interdisciplinary social science perspectives enquiring into future directions for feminist economics research. Highlighting the importance and challenge of taking gender into account in development theory and policy, this book’s complex and nuanced analyses of the social relations of gender in a global context make it an important resource for policymakers, activists and scholars alike.

Institutional Change in Southeast Asia

Social Effects Of Structural Change In Banking [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Institutional Change in Southeast Asia by Fredrik Sjöholm,José Tongzon Book Resume:

This book examines the institutional changes taking place in, and challenges facing, the region since 1997. It also describes various differences in the reform process between countries in the region. Sjöholm and Tongzon argue that the economies of southeast Asia need to reform their institutions if the previous rapid development is to continue. The institutional weaknesses have been addressed to different degrees and with different success in the affected countries. Against the backdrop of southeast Asia's importance in the world economy, it is hardly possible to overestimate the need to understand this process of change.

Social Justice and Gender Equality

Social Effects Of Structural Change In Banking [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Social Justice and Gender Equality by Günseli Berik,Yana van der Meulen Rodgers,Ann Zammit Book Resume:

The contributors to this edited volume explore the effects of various development strategies and associated macroeconomic policies on women’s well-being and progress towards gender equality. Detailed analyses of major UN reports on gender reveal the different approaches to assessing absolute and relative progress for women and the need to take into account the specifics of policy regimes when making such assessments. The book argues that neoliberal policies, especially the liberalization of trade and investment, make it difficult to close gender wage and earnings gaps, and new gender sensitive policies need to be devised. These and other issues are all examined in more detail in several gendered development histories of countries from Latin America and Asia.
