Setting the Truth Free by Book Resume:

In 1992, twenty-eight families came together in the pursuit of truth and justice. Eighteen years later, they moved a mountain. Setting the Truth Free captures, for the first time, the remarkable story of the Bloody Sunday families of Derry. The wounds of Bloody Sunday cut deep and have spanned generations; decades after the atrocity, a group of determined strangers - united in grief and anger - met and mobilised themselves to campaign for a new investigation into the killings and the exoneration of the victims. Establishing the Bloody Sunday Justice Campaign, they embarked upon one of the most remarkable human rights movements in history. To the end, it was a struggle - meeting with scorn and obstruction by fellow citizens, the Bloody Sunday families persevered. Writing to politicians, newspapers and anyone who would listen; fundraising, lobbying from Westminster to the White House and Capitol Hill and canvassing thousands door-to-door, their remarkable global campaign led to the establishment of the most complex and expensive Inquiry in British legal history. After twelve years, Lord Saville's report found that the British army's actions on Bloody Sunday were both 'unjustified' and 'unjustifiable' and made headline news all over the world. Now, forty years after that tragic day, and with the universal declarations of innocence still ringing in their ears, those most affected by Bloody Sunday have their say. This is the inspirational story of how a group of ordinary people stood up to the might of the establishment - and won.

Setting Boundaries Will Set You Free by Nancy Levin Book Resume:

Do you feel like you're a "pushover"? Do you let other people make all the plans--letting them pick the movie, the restaurant, or the vacation destination? Does self-care feel selfish to you? And do you find yourself feeling resentful toward others because they don't seem to take your needs into consideration? Can you relate? If the answer is yes, this is the book for you! In this book, master coach, speaker, and author Nancy Levin will help you establish clear and healthy boundaries. This isn't easy; many of us don't want to "rock the boat." We assume setting boundaries will lead to conflict. And, unfortunately, by avoiding conflict and not setting limits, we tend to choose long-term unhappiness instead of short-term discomfort. This book includes exercises and practical tools to help even the most conflict-averse, people-pleasing readers learn new habits. You'll learn how to recognize and take inventory of your boundaries, view your boundaries differently by creating a Boundary Pyramid, learn how to say "no" effectively, and set your Bottom-Line Boundary. As your supportive guide, Nancy will show you how to gather the courage to live a life of "boundary badassery." "This work was life-changing for me, and if you're someone who has avoided boundaries for years, it can change your life, too." -- Nancy Levin

When Truth Is All You Have by Jim McCloskey,Philip Lerman Book Resume:

“A riveting and infuriating examination of criminal prosecutions, revealing how easy it is to convict the wrong person and how nearly impossible it is to undo the error.” —Washington Post "No one has illuminated this problem more thoughtfully and persistently." —Bryan Stevenson, author of Just Mercy Jim McCloskey was at a midlife crossroads when he met the man who would change his life. A former management consultant, McCloskey had grown disenchanted with the business world; he enrolled at Princeton Theological Seminary at the age of 37. His first assignment, in 1980, was as a chaplain at Trenton State Prison. Among the inmates was Jorge de los Santos, a heroin addict who'd been convicted of murder years earlier. He swore to McCloskey that he was innocent—and, over time, McCloskey came to believe him. With no legal or investigative training to speak of, McCloskey threw himself into the case. Two years later, thanks to those efforts, Jorge de los Santos walked free, fully exonerated. McCloskey had found his calling. He established Centurion Ministries, the first group in America devoted to overturning wrongful convictions. Together with his staff and a team of forensic experts, lawyers, and volunteers—through tireless investigation and an unflagging dedication to justice—Centurion has freed 65 innocent prisoners who had been sentenced to life or death. When Truth Is All You Have is McCloskey's inspirational story, as well as those of the unjustly imprisoned for whom he has fought. Spanning the nation, it is a chronicle of faith and doubt; of triumphant success and shattering failure. It candidly exposes a life of searching and struggle, uplifted by McCloskey's certainty that he had found what he was put on earth to do. Filled with generosity, humor, and compassion, it is the soul-bearing account of a man who has redeemed innumerable lives—and incited a movement—with nothing more than his unshakeable belief in the truth.

The Truth Will Set You Free, But First It Will Piss You Off! by Gloria Steinem Book Resume:

A beautifully illustrated collection of Gloria Steinem’s most inspirational and outrageous quotes, with an introduction and essays by the feminist activist herself “A fearless book full of passion, resolute perspective, and unbiased hope for the future.”—Janelle Monáe For decades—and especially now, in these times of crisis—people around the world have found guidance, humor, and unity in Gloria Steinem’s gift for creating quotes that offer hope and inspire action. From her early days as a journalist and feminist activist, Steinem’s words have helped generations to empower themselves and work together. Covering topics from relationships (“Many are looking for the right person. Too few are trying to be the right person.”) to the patriarchy (“Men are liked better when they win. Women are liked better when they lose. This is how the patriarchy is enforced every day.”) and activism (“Revolutions, like trees, grow from the bottom up.”), this is the definitive collection of Steinem’s words on what matters most. Steinem sees quotes as “the poetry of everyday life,” so she also has included a few favorites from friends, including bell hooks, Flo Kennedy, and Michelle Obama, in this book that will make you want to laugh, march, and create some quotes of your own. In fact, at the end of the book, there’s a special space for readers to add their own quotes and others they’ve found inspiring. The Truth Will Set You Free, But First It Will Piss You Off! is both timeless and timely. It is a gift of hope from Steinem to readers, and a book to share with friends.

In this collection distinguished American and European scholars, curators and artists discuss major issues concerning the representation and commemoration of slavery, as brought into sharp focus by the 2007 bicentennial of the abolition of the slave trade. Writers consider nineteenth and twentieth century American and European images of African Americans, art installations, photography, literature, sculpture, exhibitions, performances, painting, film and material culture. This is essential reading for historians, cultural critics, art-historians, educationalists and museologists, in America as in Europe, and an important contribution to the understanding of the African diaspora, race, American and British history, heritage tourism, and transatlantic relations. Contributions include previously unpublished interview material with artists and practitioners, and a comprehensive review of the commemorative exhibitions of 2007. Illustrations include images from Louisiana, Maryland, and Virginia, many previously unpublished, in black and white, which challenge previous understandings of the aesthetics of slave representation. A Troubled Sleep by James Waller Book Resume:

In contemporary Northern Ireland, more than two decades after the peace agreement that ended the thirty-year sectarian violence known as "the Troubles" the risk of a return to violent conflict is not only present but growing. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, comparative research, and over 110 hours of face-to-face interviews with a diverse range of political, academic, civil society, and community actors across Northern Ireland, A Troubled Sleep revisits one of the world's most deeply divided societies to analyze Northern Ireland's current vulnerabilities, and points of resilience, as an allegedly "post-conflict" society. By examining the Northern Ireland example, Waller presents deep insight into what happens when identity politics prevail over democracy, when a paralysis in governance leads to a political vacuum for extremist voices to exploit, when de facto social segregation becomes normalized, when acclimatization to violence becomes a generational legacy, and when questions of who we are become secondary to who we are not.

The Truth According to Us by Annie Barrows Book Resume:

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the co-author of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society comes a wise, witty, and exuberant novel, perfect for fans of Lee Smith, that illuminates the power of loyalty and forgiveness, memory and truth, and the courage it takes to do what’s right. Annie Barrows once again evokes the charm and eccentricity of a small town filled with extraordinary characters. Her new novel, The Truth According to Us, brings to life an inquisitive young girl, her beloved aunt, and the alluring visitor who changes the course of their destiny forever. In the summer of 1938, Layla Beck’s father, a United States senator, cuts off her allowance and demands that she find employment on the Federal Writers’ Project, a New Deal jobs program. Within days, Layla finds herself far from her accustomed social whirl, assigned to cover the history of the remote mill town of Macedonia, West Virginia, and destined, in her opinion, to go completely mad with boredom. But once she secures a room in the home of the unconventional Romeyn family, she is drawn into their complex world and soon discovers that the truth of the town is entangled in the thorny past of the Romeyn dynasty. At the Romeyn house, twelve-year-old Willa is desperate to learn everything in her quest to acquire her favorite virtues of ferocity and devotion—a search that leads her into a thicket of mysteries, including the questionable business that occupies her charismatic father and the reason her adored aunt Jottie remains unmarried. Layla’s arrival strikes a match to the family veneer, bringing to light buried secrets that will tell a new tale about the Romeyns. As Willa peels back the layers of her family’s past, and Layla delves deeper into town legend, everyone involved is transformed—and their personal histories completely rewritten. Praise for The Truth According to Us “As delightfully eccentric as Guernsey yet refreshingly different . . . an epic but intimate family novel with richly imagined characters . . . Willa’s indomitable spirit, keen sense of adventure and innate intelligence reminded me of two other motherless girls in literature: Scout Finch in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and Flavia de Luce in Alan Bradley’s big-hearted British mystery series.”—The Washington Post “The Truth According to Us has all the characteristics of a great summer read: A plot that makes you want to keep turning the pages; a setting that makes you feel like you’re inhabiting another time and place; and characters who become people you’re sad to leave behind—and thus who always stay with you.”—Miami Herald “It takes a brave author to make the heroine of a new novel an observant and feisty girl . . . like Scout Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird. . . . But Barrows . . . has created a believable and touching character in Willa.”—USA Today “[A] heartwarming coming-of-age novel [that] sparkles with folksy depictions of a tight-knit family and life in a small town . . . full of richly drawn, memorable characters.”—The Seattle Times “A big, juicy family saga with warm humor and tragic twists . . . The story gets more and more absorbing as it moves briskly along.”—St. Louis Post-Dispatch “Annie Barrows leaves no doubt that she is a storyteller of rare caliber, with wisdom and insight to spare. Every page rings like a bell.”—Paula McLain, author of The Paris Wife

This book is all about life and what life can become in the martial arts world. This knowledge can be applied to almost any situation in life. This book should help one find ones own path. I started writing this book when I had no place to go. I had to take a journey inside myself, and this information poured out of mind through a pen that helped create the contents of this book. The contents saved my life in a time of great need, in the mist of stress, and through hard times and great depression. I hope this book finds at least one person to help bring greater understanding, peace, love, and happiness to help guide oneself in this great journey called life. This book isnt just a self-help book or a simple training guide; its more than that to me. When in doubt, write your ideas and problems down on a piece of paper and solve all your issues in time with practice and dedicationthis method was a great help and was a great source of information while I created this book. Once you enter the realm of an opponent, you must to be able to mold and use your opponent and your opponents actions to benefit yourself and your actions. Counters are very helpful when trying to turn an opponents actions and energy against them. When training for agility, speed, focus, and power, one must train to be able to maintain composure at all times with a calm, clear, and steady mind while in motion. Power must be controlled at all times to reduce the risk of injury to the self and others. When training, keep the eyes open and your mind prepared and stay focused on the goal and target(s) to better ensure success in motion.

Human Nature in an Age of Biotechnology by Tamar Sharon Book Resume:

New biotechnologies have propelled the question of what it means to be human – or posthuman – to the forefront of societal and scientific consideration. This volume provides an accessible, critical overview of the main approaches in the debate on posthumanism, and argues that they do not adequately address the question of what it means to be human in an age of biotechnology. Not because they belong to rival political camps, but because they are grounded in a humanist ontology that presupposes a radical separation between human subjects and technological objects. The volume offers a comprehensive mapping of posthumanist discourse divided into four broad approaches—two humanist-based approaches: dystopic and liberal posthumanism, and two non-humanist approaches: radical and methodological posthumanism. The author compares and contrasts these models via an exploration of key issues, from human enhancement, to eugenics, to new configurations of biopower, questioning what role technology plays in defining the boundaries of the human, the subject and nature for each. Building on the contributions and limitations of radical and methodological posthumanism, the author develops a novel perspective, mediated posthumanism, that brings together insights in the philosophy of technology, the sociology of biomedicine, and Michel Foucault’s work on ethical subject constitution. In this framework, technology is neither a neutral tool nor a force that alienates humanity from itself, but something that is always already part of the experience of being human, and subjectivity is viewed as an emergent property that is constantly being shaped and transformed by its engagements with biotechnologies. Mediated posthumanism becomes a tool for identifying novel ethical modes of human experience that are richer and more multifaceted than current posthumanist perspectives allow for. The book will be essential reading for students and scholars working on ethics and technology, philosophy of technology, poststructuralism, technology and the body, and medical ethics.

I Lost My Cathedral by Henry J. Johnson Book Resume:

The purpose of this book is to engage and inform the readers of occurrences past and present on the island of Dominica. It is meant to initiate discussion and to offer the youth a historical perspective that may have become lost over time. A work of passion derived from many personal experiences and many tales handed down through the ages, it is written mostly in a style that is intended for the reader to identify with some aspects of Dominica and Caribbean life in what was considered to be the good old days. I intentionally delayed reading many books written by authors from Dominica, since I wanted my writings to be unique and not influenced by the experiences of others. Therefore if you have read comparable accounts of native pastime or other depictions of our natural history, culture, and heritage, then the material that you are reading here is purely coincidental. Now that this literary exercise has been completed, I look forward to reading and savoring the compositions of my compatriots, and I hope that they will also savor mine. A sojourn through fact and fiction, this book of short stories and reflections offers a challenge for the reader to separate the facts from fiction that only this author can reveal. However if one is able to identify with one minute detail of this literary experience, then my goal as a writer will have been fulfilled. A glossary of words and phrases that may be unfamiliar to the reader is included at the end. Above all, many of the stories are thought provoking, intended to elicit laughter and nostalgia and to maintain one’s interest until the last word has been read. These stories could be anyone’s stories; and it is my fervent wish that in the aftermath of this literary exercise, others may be inspired to inscribe their own experiences of everyday life, either from a historical perspective or from modern day interactions.

Afterlife of Events by Marek Tamm Book Resume:

Recently, we have witnessed a rearticulation of the traditional relationship between the past, present and future, broadening historiography's range from studying past events to their later impact and meaning. The volume proposes to look at the perspectives of this approach called mnemohistory, and argues for a redefinition of the term 'event'.
