Road to Nowhere by Book Resume:

How to Build a Transportation System to Provide Mobility for All Road to Nowhere exposes the flaws in Silicon Valley’s vision of the future: ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft to take us anywhere; electric cars to make them ‘green’; and automation to ensure transport is cheap and ubiquitous. Such promises are implausible and potentially dangerous. As Paris Marx shows, such technological visions are a threat to our ideas of what a society should be. Electric cars are not a silver bullet for sustainability, and autonomous vehicles won’t guarantee road safety. There will not be underground tunnels to eliminate traffic congestion, and micro-mobility services will not replace car travel any sooner than we will see the arrival of the long-awaited flying car. In response, Marx offers a vision for a more collective way of organizing transportation systems that considers the needs of poor, marginalized, and vulnerable people. The book argues that rethinking mobility can be the first step in a broader reimagining of how we design and live in our future cities. We must create streets that allow for social interaction and conviviality. We need reasons to get out of our cars and to use public means of transit determined by community needs rather than algorithmic control. Such decisions should be guided by the search for quality of life rather than for profit.

Road to Nowhere by Mark Brandon "Chopper" Read Book Resume:

"This book is about my journey through the Australian prison system. You'll have heard a few of these stories before, but not like this. It's a step-by-step history of my twenty three years behind bars; what day to day life was really like in jail, what I did to survive and why I'll never go back. It's not a nice story. I was not a nice prisoner..." Mark "Chopper" Read is over fifty years old and has spent almost half that time in prison. He is a man who knows the Australian prison system better than any other. He knows how the definitive school of hard knocks turns juvenile delinquents into hardened criminals. How it feels to be thrust into a world of violent psychopaths and be changed, irrevocably, into the worst of their number. He also knows how it feels to get stabbed (a massive punch with a cold pin in the middle). How it feels to lose your ears to a prison-issue razor blade (a gurgling sound like a little brook). How it feels to fight, maim and mutilate to stay alive. And what it means when that way of life no longer makes sense. This book is Chopper's redemption. It is the real story of the man, the criminal and the prisoner, told with black humour and surprising insight.

Road To Nowhere by Ninie Hammon Book Resume:

The sorceress of psychological suspense, Ninie Hammon, is back with a new stand-alone novel in the world of her deeply unsettling Nowhere, USA series. Desperate to get her life back on track, Brianna Haggarty has come home to Nower County to do one thing: make amends by building her grandmother a chicken coop to replace the one she burned down as a pot-smoking teenager. But when she arrives, her grandmother is gone. There’s absolutely nothing in her house — no furniture, not so much as a gum wrapper. The rest of the county’s residents have vanished, too. Dawson McCade is running for his life, hunted by assassins who would do anything to keep him from testifying. If he can just make it to the safe house in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky … But when he gets there, nobody’s home. They’ve vanished, along with everyone else. Cade forms an alliance with Brianna. He’ll help build her chicken house, she’ll keep him safe. And they'll both try to figure out what malevolent force could possibly snatch a whole county of people off the face of the earth. Then the killers show up. Can they survive attacks by trained assassins and find the vanished loved ones they've lost? ★★★★★ "I found this book captivating. I fell in love with the two main characters – Brianna Haggarty and Dawson McCade. They form a strange alliance as they both face demons from the past. I want to know more about these two young people and hope that Hammon brings them back in a sequel to this story. I hope it’s not just wishful thinking." -- Bonsterblack ★★★★★ "I’m really glad I found this author. Since reading Road to Nowhere I’ve picked up the rest of the series and The Last Safe Place, also great! This story was part Twilight Zone, part Stephen King (but less ghoulish). I can just hear Rod Serling narrating. A real page turner." -- Sherie ★★★★★ "Ninie has done it again!!! I fell in love with the characters Cade and Brianna from the first chapter. It just gets better and better as you read page after page as well as heart pounding things happening. It was so hard to put down. I absolutely hated the story to end. This is a book you don’t want to miss!! Write on Ninie can’t wait for your next book. Don’t make us wait to long." -- Cora A Myers ★★★★★ "I love Ninie Hammons characters. They become like friends and family. She has such a way with dialogue. I find myself laughing out loud." -- Lollipop Fans of Justified, Under The Dome, and LOST will love settling down to spend some time in Nowhere USA.

The Road to Nowhere by Jacob S. Hacker Book Resume:

During the 1992 presidential campaign, health care reform became a hot issue, paving the way for one of the most important yet ill-fated social policy initiatives in American history: Bill Clinton's 1993 proposal for comprehensive coverage under "managed competition." Here Jacob Hacker not only investigates for the first time how managed competition became the president's reform framework, but also illuminates how issues and policies emerge. He follows Clinton's policy ideas from their initial formulation by policy experts through their endorsement by medical industry leaders and politicians to their inclusion--in a new and unexpected form--in the proposal itself. Throughout he explores key questions: Why did health reform become a national issue in the 1990s? Why did Clinton choose managed competition over more familiar options during the 1992 presidential campaign? What effect did this have on the fate of his proposal? Drawing on records of the President's task force, interviews with a wide range of key policy players, and many other sources, Hacker locates his analysis within the context of current political theories on agenda setting. He concludes that Clinton chose managed competition partly because advocates inside and outside the campaign convinced him that it represented a unique middle road to health care reform. This conviction, Hacker maintains, blinded the president and his allies to the political risks of the approach and hindered the development of an effective strategy for enacting it.

The Road to Nowhere Leads Everywhere by Stephen B. Allen Book Resume:

The Road to Nowhere Leads Everywhere: Tales from the Lands of Arlington Green By: Stephan B. Allen Foregoing her usual opening in an attempt to control the middle of the board with her pawn, it was the Queen’s Knight with which she made her first move; I glanced up from the board to see a smug smile upon her face, as if she were expecting some confusion on my part due to her change of tactics. Nodding my head slightly, I did not comment upon the unusual move on her part. Moving my gaze back to the board, I casually asked, “My lady, do you know why the only piece which can open a game besides a pawn is the Knight?” Caught by surprise at my question, though she maintained her air of superiority, she eventually replied, “I believe it is due to being capable of jumping the pawn, Mr. Ainsley.” Placing my hand upon the piece she assumed I would use for my opening move, I turned my attention away from the board to once again gaze upon her face. While changing to another piece entirely to make a play, I answered matter-of-factly, “Actually, that move is allowed by the rules, My Lady. I should have thought you would have been aware of what those were-my mistake.” Ever wonder what a smug expression looks like when it virtually melts off someone’s face? Play chess with me sometime and find out.

Nowhere for Very Long by Brianna Madia Book Resume:

In this beautifully written, vividly detailed memoir, a young woman chronicles her adventures traveling across the deserts of the American West in an orange van named Bertha and reflects on an unconventional approach to life. A woman defined by motion, Brianna Madia bought a beat-up bright orange van, filled it with her two dogs Bucket and Dagwood, and headed into the canyons of Utah with her husband. Nowhere for Very Long is her deeply felt, immaculately told story of exploration—of the world outside and the spirit within. However, pursuing a life of intention isn’t always what it seems. In fact, at times it was downright boring, exhausting, and even desperate—when Bertha overheated and she was forced to pull over on a lonely stretch of South Dakota highway; when the weather was bitterly cold and her water jugs froze beneath her as she slept in the parking lot of her office; when she worried about money, her marriage, and the looming question mark of her future. But Brianna was committed to living a life true to herself, come what may, and that made all the difference. Nowhere for Very Long is the true story of a woman learning and unlearning, from backroads to breakdowns, from married to solo, and finally, from lost to found to lost again . . . this time, on purpose.

The Road to Somewhere by David Goodhart Book Resume:

A robust and timely investigation into the political and moral fault-lines that divide Brexit Britain and Trump's America -- and how a new settlement may be achieved. Several decades of greater economic and cultural openness in the West have not benefited all our citizens. Among those who have been left behind, a populist politics of culture and identity has successfully challenged the traditional politics of Left and Right, creating a new division: between the mobile "achieved" identity of the people from Anywhere, and the marginalized, roots-based identity of the people from Somewhere. This schism accounts for the Brexit vote, the election of Donald Trump, the decline of the center-left, and the rise of populism across Europe. David Goodhart's compelling investigation of the new global politics reveals how the Somewhere backlash is a democratic response to the dominance of Anywhere interests, in everything from mass higher education to mass immigration.

Quirky, discursive, endlessly curious, Heat-Moon had embarked on an American journey off the beaten path. Sticking to the small places via the small roads -- those colored blue on maps -- he uncovered a nation deep in character, story, and charm. Now, for the first time since Blue Highways, Heat-Moon is back on the backroads. Roads to Quoz is his lyrical, funny, and touching account of a series of American journeys into small-town America.

'Tinkers' by Mary Burke Book Resume:

The history of Irish Travellers is not analogous to that of the 'tinker', a Europe-wide underworld fantasy created by sixteenth-century British and continental Rogue Literature that came to be seen as an Irish character alone as English became dominant in Ireland. By the Revival, the tinker represented bohemian, pre-Celtic aboriginality, functioning as the cultural nationalist counter to the Victorian Gypsy mania. Long misunderstood as a portrayal of actual Travellers, J.M. Synge's influential The Tinker's Wedding was pivotal to this 'Irishing' of the tinker, even as it acknowledged that figure's cosmopolitan textual roots. Synge's empathetic depiction is closely examined, as are the many subsequent representations that looked to him as a model to subvert or emulate. In contrast to their Revival-era romanticization, post-independence writing portrayed tinkers as alien interlopers, while contemporaneous Unionists labelled them a contaminant from the hostile South. However, after Travellers politicized in the 1960s, more even-handed depictions heralded a querying of the 'tinker' fantasy that has shaped contemporary screen and literary representations of Travellers and has prompted Traveller writers to transubstantiate Otherness into the empowering rhetoric of ethnic difference. Though its Irish equivalent has oscillated between idealization and demonization, US racial history facilitates the cinematic figuring of the Irish-American Traveler as lovable 'white trash' rogue. This process is informed by the mythology of a population with whom Travelers are allied in the white American imagination, the Scots-Irish (Ulster-Scots). In short, the 'tinker' is much more central to Irish, Northern Irish and even Irish-American identity than is currently recognised.

To Hell & High Water by Gregory Bryan Book Resume:

To Hell and High Water tells the story of the quest of two brothers to conquer the extreme conditions of outback Australia, recreating the Bourke to Hungerford `tramp' that influenced some of Australian literary legend Henry Lawson's greatest works. The book is part autobiography and part biography. It is an autobiography of the author's experiences with his brother overcoming significant obstacles to achieve his dream of walking in Lawson's footsteps. It paints a vivid picture of some of Australia's most remote country, the challenges and dangers, the heat, the distance, mosquitoes, blisters and thirst. At the same time it blends in the biography of Henry Lawson's captivating life including his marriage, struggles with alcoholism, his suicide attempt, influences upon his writing and his ideals of mateship. Extracts of Lawson's own writing have been carefully selected and woven into the narrative in a manner that draws parallels between the two experiences and offers fresh insights into his life.

A Mug Up with Elisabeth by Melissa Hayes,Marilyn Westervelt Book Resume:

Anyone who has come under the spell of Elisabeth Ogilvie's novels to bound to wonder about this writer who, for more than fifty years, has crafted one memorable book after another: historical fiction, mysteries, young adult stories, even a gothic novel. Most are set in Maine or the Scottish Highlands, and for many readers it is Ogilvie's beautifully realized settings that make them pick up her novels again and again. Equally fascinating are her characters: vivid, individual, appealingly imperfect, deeply rooted in their families and home ground. Now, at last, we have a book about this prolific yet unassuming author who would rather live quietly on her Maine island than seek the limelight. A Mug-Up with Elisabeth is the definitive resource on her life, her work, her characters, and her settings--including Criehaven, the inspiration for Bennett's Island, which is arguably one of the most evocative locales in American fiction. On Bennett's Island, many a tale is told and many a crisis resolved around the kitchen table while the islanders pause for a "mug-up" of coffee. In these pages, readers can enjoy a mug-up with Elisabeth Ogilvie herself.

One More Train to Ride by Cliff (Oats) Williams Book Resume:

Drawn from intimate interviews with 14 modern-day "steel rail nomads," One More Train to Ride provides a revealing picture of today's American hobo. Interspersed with their stories are original poems and songs echoing the ancient lyricism and loneliness of life on the road. Their connections with the past make the experiences of these hoboes even more striking, as they ride freight trains and jungle up in hobo camps, light years away from the 21st-century cyberworld -- yet touching the very core of American freedom and individualism. Cliff Williams skillfully elicits details of family background, motives, and clear insights into the daily life and philosophy of the modern hobo. With its evocative link to the past, One More Train to Ride continues a long tradition of books on hobo oral history, including Nels Anderson's The Hobo (1923) and Thomas Minehan's Boy and Girl Tramps of America (1934).

A MOUNTAINTOP VIEW OF FAITH by Charles E. Maldon Sr. Book Resume:

A Mountaintop View of Faith is an anointed, truthful and empowering book on God’s promise, your faith, and victory over everyday adversity. It is a hard hitting, provocative, and exhilarating work written to empower, especially believers, to deepen their faith and be encouraged even facing seemingly impossible adversities. Maldon states that adversities will always be a part of life and he contends that Satan desires to ultimately crush our resolve, hinder our promises from God, and weaken our faith in the sufficiency of God. He points out that adversities may be two-fold: trials appointed by God, or those self inflicted, resulting from our rebellion against God’s spiritual instructions. He skillfully teases out how self imposed cripplers such as anger, un-forgiveness, selfishness, disobedience, pride, immorality, worry and others can rob you of peace and promises from God. Maldon encourages us to deepen our faith to reach a pinnacle mountaintop perspective of God.
