Beyond Forgiveness by Tunde Abednego Samuel Book Resume:

Pastor A. T. Samuel, in this book, captured very well one of the major problems ravaging Christian homes, societies, and churches throughout the world today. Those problems are related to the lack of the spirit of forgiveness in the daily interaction among people. It was Alexander Pope, an English poet in the eighteenth century, who said that to err is human and to forgive is divine. This book shows clearly, with numerous references to biblical passages, that the wounds caused by lack of forgiveness can be healed only through the intervention of the Holy Spirit. Christian brothers and sisters together with others in our societies who are burdened with unforgiveness will gain tremendously by reading this book, which is written in simple English and reinforced with many relevant and valuable biblical quotations.

**This ebook version of The Biblical Illustrator - Pastoral Commentary on Ecclesiastes contains nearly 700 pages of commentary! What if Charles Spurgeon helped you prepare next Sunday’s sermon? Or what if you could talk over your preaching with Joseph Parker, Richard Baxter, Henry Ward Beecher and H. P. Liddon. Do you think it would make a difference to get the input of some of the greatest preachers who ever lived? That’s precisely what Joseph Exell had in mind when he put together the massive series of volumes called The Biblical Illustrator. In what can only be called a Herculean feat, he spent years gathering preaching notes and sermon outlines from the very best preachers of his day (in the late 1800s and early 1900s), and he did it covering every book of the Bible. And it is amazingly comprehensive. Exell approached his task by taking every verse in the Bible and seeking to discover how it has been preached in the past. Though there is plenty of exegetical material here, this is not primarily a commentary. This series is for preachers, teachers, Bible students and anyone else looking for penetrating pastoral insights from some of the all-time greats of the faith.

The Translatability of the Religious Dimension in Shakespeare from Page to Stage, from West to East by Jenny Wong Book Resume:

This interdisciplinary study traverses the disciplines of translation studies, hermeneutics, theater studies, and sociology. Under the "power turn" or "political turn" in translation studies, the omission and untranslatability of religious material are often seen as the product of censorship or self-censorship. But the theology of each individual translating agent is often neglected as a contributing factor to such untranslatability. This book comprehensively traces the hermeneutical process of the translators as readers, and the situational process and semiotics of theater translation. Together these factors contribute to an image of translated literature that in turn influences the literature's reception. While translation theorists influenced by the current "sociological turn" view social factors as determining translation activities and strategies, this volume argues that the translator's or the dramatist's theology and religious values interact with the socio-cultural milieu to carve out a unique drama production. Often it is the religious values of the translating agents that determine the product, rather than social factors. Further, the translatability of religious discourse should be understood in a broader sense according to the seven dimensions proposed by Ninian Smart, rather than merely focusing on untranslatability as a result of semantic and linguistic differences.

The Hidden Spirituality of Men by Matthew Fox Book Resume:

It is no secret that men are in trouble today. From war to ecological collapse, most of the world’s critical problems stem from a distorted masculinity out of control. Yet our culture rewards the very dysfunctions responsible for those problems. To Matthew Fox, our crucial task is to open our minds to a deeper understanding of the healthy masculine than we receive from our media, culture, and religions. Popular religion forces the punitive imagery of fundamentalism on us, pushing most men away from their natural yearning for spirituality and toward intolerance and domination. Meanwhile, many men, particularly young men, are looking for images of healthy masculinity to emulate and finding nothing. To awaken what Fox calls “the sacred masculine,” he unearths ten metaphors, or archetypes, ranging from the Green Man, an ancient pagan symbol of our fundamental relationship with nature, to the Grandfatherly Heart to the Spiritual Warrior. He explores archetypes of sacred marriage, showing how partnership becomes the ultimate expression of healthy masculinity. By stirring our natural yearning for healthy spirituality, Fox argues, these timeless archetypes can inspire men to pursue their higher calling to reinvent the world.

The Last Man by Mary Shelley Book Resume:

Mary Shelley was ahead of her time - arguably by 200 years. For when her novel 'The Last Man' was published in 1826 with a plot featuring a deadly global pandemic, the public was not impressed. In modern days, it looks far more current. Her first novel since 'Frankenstein', 'The Last Man' is set in the late 21st century as humankind is virtually wiped out by a global pandemic. There are no zombies, but fans of 'The Walking Dead' will appreciate the apocalyptic theme and the way Shelley follows the fortunes of a small group of survivors as they unravel emotionally. They include characters inspired by two men she was mourning: her husband and famous poet Percy Bysshe Shelley and the poet Lord Byron. Can they survive? Or is the human race going the way of the dinosaurs? Mary Shelley (1797–1851) earned her place in the pantheon of British novelists with her ground-breaking Gothic novel ‘Frankenstein’ (1818). Considered one of the first true works of science-fiction, the book became an instant bestseller. But she was far from a one-hit-wonder, producing a host of other novels, including 'Valperga', 'Perkin Warbeck' and 'The Last Man'. Most were not well received in her lifetime, though, only being fully appreciated from the 1960s. She moved in a circle of famed 19th-century writers and philosophers. She was married to the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley and spent time with Lord Byron. Her mother was the philosopher and feminist activist Mary Wollstonecraft and her father was the political philosopher William Godwin. Mary Shelley’s work has been adapted for TV, stage and film on many occasions, with Boris Karloff famously playing Frankenstein’s monster on screen in 1933. Other adaptations include ‘Mary Shelley's Frankenstein’ (1994) starring Kenneth Branagh and Robert De Niro and ‘Viktor Frankenstein’ (2015) starring Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy. Most recently, Elle Fanning portrayed Mary in Haifaa Al-Mansour’s film ‘Mary Shelley’ from 2017.

Words as Swords: Verbal Violence as a Construction of Authority in Renaissance and Contemporary English Drama by Senlen Sila Book Resume:

Verbal violence, as a sophisticated means of persuasion and manipulation, is as effective on the stage as physical violence. Since the destructive effects of verbal violence are less recognized and long-term, it is a vital instrument for constructing power and authority. Sıla Şenlen tackles this subject in Renaissance and contemporary English drama. In Renaissance tragedies composed in blank-verse such as Marlowe’s Tamburlaine, Part I, and Shakespeare’s Richard III, political power is identified and matched with a powerful rhetorical style. Almost all of the battles in such plays are fought verbally rather than physically on the stage. In these verbal duels or battles, competent speakers such as Tamburlaine and Richard III exploit the frontiers of deception, manipulate, abuse and destroy their opponents with low verbal competence through verbal violence. Thus, a parallel is drawn between rhetorical skills and military power, and between ‘word’ and ‘sword’. In contemporary English plays, the violence of daily language not only contributes to the creation of a realistic spectacle, but also –and more importantly– to the process of replacing free critical thinking by automatically preconceived patterns of thought and speech. Institutions and related discourses function to set up norms or standards against which people are defined, categorized, judged and punished. In Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party and Anthony Neilson’s The Censor, verbal violence in the form of daily language is not only deployed to construct authority, dominate and ‘standardize’ subjects, but also to deconstruct and defy authority.

An Exposition of Psalm 119 by Thomas Manton Book Resume:

Thomas Manton’s collections of 158 sermons on Psalm 119 is one of the lasting works of the Puritan era. Here’s what Spurgeon said on Manton’s exposition of Psalm 119: “Fully up to Manton’s highest mark, and he is well known to have been one of the chief of the Puritan brotherhood. The work is long, but that results only from the abundance of matter.” J.C. Ryle championed the republication of Manton’s works in the 19th century. He wrote, “Manton’s chief excellence as a writer, in my judgment, consists in the ease, perspicuousness, and clearness of his style. I find it easier to read fifty pages of Manton’s than ten of some of his brethren’s; and after reading, I feel that I carry more away. Let no one, moreover, suppose that because Manton’s style is easy, his writings show any lack of matter and thought. Nothing of the kind. The fertility of his mind seems to have been truly astonishing. Every page in his books contains many ideas, and gives you plenty to think about. If Manton never soars so high as some writers, he is, at any rate, never trifling, never shallow, never wearisome, and never dull.” On Manton’s practical commentary on James, Spurgeon notes: “In Manton’s best style. An exhaustive work, as far as the information of the period admitted. Few such books are written now.”

The Last Man by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley Book Resume:

Mary Shelley (née Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, often known as Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley) was a British novelist, short story writer, dramatist, essayist, biographer, travel writer, and editor of the works of her husband, Romantic poet and philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley. She was the daughter of the political philosopher William Godwin and the writer, philosopher, and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft. Mary Shelley was taken seriously as a writer in her own lifetime, though reviewers often missed the political edge to her novels. After her death, however, she was chiefly remembered only as the wife of Percy Bysshe Shelley and as the author of Frankenstein. It was not until 1989, when Emily Sunstein published her prizewinning biography Mary Shelley: Romance and Reality, that a full-length scholarly biography analyzing all of Shelley's letters, journals, and works within their historical context was published. The well-meaning attempts of Mary Shelley's son and daughter-in-law to "Victorianise" her memory through the censoring of letters and biographical material contributed to a perception of Mary Shelley as a more conventional, less reformist figure than her works suggest. Her own timid omissions from Percy Shelley's works and her quiet avoidance of public controversy in the later years of her life added to this impression. The eclipse of Mary Shelley's reputation as a novelist and biographer meant that, until the last thirty years, most of her works remained out of print, obstructing a larger view of her achievement. She was seen as a one-novel author, if that. In recent decades, however, the republication of almost all her writings has stimulated a new recognition of its value. Her voracious reading habits and intensive study, revealed in her journals and letters and reflected in her works, is now better appreciated. Shelley's recognition of herself as an author has also been recognized; after Percy's death, she wrote about her authorial ambitions: "I think that I can maintain myself, and there is something inspiriting in the idea". Scholars now consider Mary Shelley to be a major Romantic figure, significant for her literary achievement and her political voice as a woman and a liberal.

Character as a Subversive Force in Shakespeare by Bernard J. Paris Book Resume:

Shakespeare's history and Roman plays are usually discussed in terms of their political themes; their leading characters are imagined human beings who must be understood in motivational terms. Analyzing these characters with the aid of modern psychology (the theories of Karen Horney), this story attempts both to make sense of inconsistencies within the plays and the controversies they have produced.

The Last Words and Letters of Christopher Love by Christopher Love Book Resume:

Christopher Love's political leanings and involvements had him arrested by Oliver Cromwell’s forces for his “alleged” plan to raise money for the restoration of the monarchy, a charge Love denied. He was arrested along with six other prominent ministers in London (all Presbyterians, including Thomas Watson), for treason. The rest were released after six months, but Love was beheaded on Tower Hill, London on August 22, 1651. This work is a “vindication” of Love's position, while also housing a number of documents that have not been previously published, including the last sermon he ever preached which was on Job 30:23, and his final words immediately before being executed. The letters contained in this volume are eminently spiritual and practical. And the vindication itself demonstrates a thoroughly biblical pattern of being zealous for a good name. Throughout this work Love’s last words are a testimony to God’s grace and his convictions of standing before God and men without guile. This is not a scan or facsimile, and contains an active table of contents for electronic versions.
