Redbone: The True Story of a Native American Rock Band by Book Resume:

Experience the riveting, powerful story of the Native American civil rights movement and the resulting struggle for identity told through the high-flying career of west coast rock n' roll pioneers, Redbone. You've heard the hit song “Come and Get Your Love” in the movie Guardians of the Galaxy, but the story of the band behind it is one of cultural, political, and social importance. Brothers Pat and Lolly Vegas were talented Native American rock musicians that took the 1960s Sunset Strip by storm. They influenced The Doors and jammed with Jimmy Hendrix before he was “Jimi,” and the idea of a band made up of completely Native Americans soon followed. Determined to control their creative vision and maintain their cultural identity, they eventually signed a deal with Epic Records in 1969. But as the American Indian Movement gained momentum the band took a stand, choosing pride in their ancestry over continued commercial reward. Created with the cooperation of the Vegas family, painstaking steps were taken to ensure the historical accuracy of this important and often overlooked story of America's past. Part biography and part research journalism, Redbone provides a voice to a people long neglected in American history.

The Digital Evangelicals by Travis Warren Cooper Book Resume:

When it comes to evangelical Christianity, the internet is both a refuge and a threat. It hosts Zoom prayer groups and pornographic videos, religious revolutions and silly cat videos. Platforms such as social media, podcasts, blogs, and digital Bibles all constitute new arenas for debate about social and religious boundaries, theological and ecclesial orthodoxy, and the internet's inherent danger and value. In The Digital Evangelicals, Travis Warren Cooper locates evangelicalism as a media event rather than as a coherent religious tradition by focusing on the intertwined narratives of evangelical Christianity and emerging digital culture in the United States. He focuses on two dominant media traditions: media sincerity, immediate and direct interpersonal communication, and media promiscuity, communication with the primary goal of extending the Christian community regardless of physical distance. Cooper, whose work is informed by ethnographic fieldwork, traces these conflicting paradigms from the Protestant Reformation through the rise of the digital and argues that the tension is culminating in a crisis of evangelical authority. What counts as authentic interaction? Who has authority over the circulation of information? While many studies claim that technology influences religion, The Digital Evangelicals reveals how Protestant metaphors and discourses shaped the emergence of the internet and explores what this relationship with global new media means for evangelicalism.

Red by R.C. Besteder Book Resume:

Red, The Saga of Red Dog, is the first of two volumes on a redbone hound of wolf mix that became a ferial dog and one of her pups, "Rot." In this book and the second, two significant questions asked by dog lovers are answered. The first has to do with whether a dog has a soul and the second is whether a dog has an afterlife? Question one is answered in the first book and question two will be answered in the second. Red was a real dog but her story is presented in a fictional narrative. A principle is illustrated namely that the righteous care for their animals. As opposed to animal abuse, what happened to Red, is intended to enlighten readers on the proper way to treat one's dog. There is mystery in the composition of Red. It's left to the reader to pick up the many hints the author has in mind and in one special instance what appears to be a contradiction has a deeper meaning for the reader to comprehend. This book is quite educational and will contribute to the reader's knowledge and appreciation of dogs. The background of the early life of Red is one in which the author was reared and is presented with great detail and accuracy. Note Red's first Christmas. The raccoon hunt was an actual experience of the writer. Red born in Pennsylvania runs with wolves through New York and into Canada, and in her sojourn ends up in Florida. Red is fast moving and exciting. It was written with great emotion and it is hoped that you will be inwardly compelled to follow the good against evil plot to the completion of Rot, son of Red.

Medical, Genetic & Behavioral Risk Factors of Coonhounds by Ross D. Clark, DVM Book Resume:

This book (Coonhounds) provides you with a through description and positive attributes of this breed including origin, purpose, history, normal heights and weights, acceptable colors and behavioral traits. Our books differ from most books on dog breeds because this book also provides you with a comprehensive and authoritative source of all the known predisposed hereditary health syndromes for the breed. You will find extensive references for each problem described. We also provide the breed club address for this breed and a list of laboratories and organizations that can provide professional help and information. As a small animal veterinarian, I have always been intrigued by the way dogs have been bred to fill a purpose in life and further impressed that they also tend to love performing that service. Greyhounds and other sight hounds are built for speed with aerodynamic bodies consisting of small head, deep chest, narrow waist and large leg muscles. On the other hand Dachshunds take their name from German words meaning “badger dog” and they use their long nose, long body and short legs to both track, enter and dig into badger dens. After developing a practice that catered to clients with show dogs, my interest in each breed continued to grow as I studied and observed more and more about the unique predisposition and incidence of health problems in each breed. Breeders of purebred dogs for show were a challenge and inspirational for me to research and help them with their unique health problems. Historically references to hereditary problems are scattered throughout various Veterinary medical texts and journals such as ophthalmology, neurology, gastroenterology, cardiovascular and dermatology. This book, as well as the other books and articles I have written, is researched and compiled with the intention to provide both veterinarians and dog owners with comprehensive and authoritative predisposition information under the breed name. At the date of this publication, The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation and the The Kennel Club of England reports over 400 known hereditary health syndromes throughout the dog kingdom. At the writing of my first book in 1983, less than 50 hereditary issues are able to be predicted and or diagnosed. Sequencing of the canine genome, DNA tests, metabolic testing including blood tests and urine testing; plus, phenotypic examinations such as radiographs, ultrasound, and CERF or OFA eye registry exams by a Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist have advanced the science of breed related health and behavioral problems. This book will provide veterinarians, researchers, pet owners and breeders with a comprehensive guide to all the known problems veterinarians and dog owners should consider during pet selection and throughout each life stage of our canine friends.

The Perfect Golden Circle by Benjamin Myers Book Resume:

“Nobody does troubled figures in a stunning landscape like Ben Myers. He’s a major force in the English novel and he gets better with every book.” Max Porter, author of Grief is The Thing With Feathers and Lanny From a British literary sensation, the story of two rural outcasts and the crop circles they create over the course of a long, hot and very strange summer. Summer 1989, rural England, the tail end of long decade of mass unemployment, class war and rebellion, and the continued destruction of the English countryside. Over the course of a burning hot summer, two very different men - traumatized ex-soldier Calvert, and affable and chaotic Redbone - set out nightly in a decrepit camper van to undertake an extraordinary project. Under cover of darkness, the two men traverse the fields of rural England in secret, forming crop circles in elaborate and mysterious patterns, designs so intricate that they inspire the kind of awe that the ancient Gothic cathedral in nearby Salisbury once inspired. As the summer wears on, and their designs grow ever more ambitious, the two men find that their work has become a cult international sensation - and that an unlikely and beautiful friendship has taken root as the wheat ripens from green to gold. But as harvest-time beckons — and as media and the authorities begin to take too much interest in their work— Calvert and Redbone have to race against time to finish the most stunning and original crop circle ever conceived: the Honeycomb Double Helix. Moving and exhilarating, and recalling the apocalyptic visions of William Blake, Alan Moore and Cormac MacCarthy, The Perfect Golden Circle is a captivating, tender and slyly witty novel about the power of beauty to heal trauma and fight power.

August into Winter by Guy Vanderhaeghe Book Resume:

NATIONAL BESTSELLER The first novel in nearly a decade from the three-time Governor General's Award‒winning author of The Last Crossing, August Into Winter is an epic story of crime and retribution, of war and its long shadow, and of the redemptive possibilities of love. You carried the past into the future on your back, its knees and arms hugging you tighter with every step. It is 1939, with the world on the brink of global war, when Constable Hotchkiss confronts the spoiled, narcissistic man-child Ernie Sickert about a rash of disturbing pranks in their small prairie town. Outraged and cornered, Ernie commits an act of unspeakable violence, setting in motion a course of events that will change forever the lives of all in his wake. With Loretta Pipe—the scrappy twelve-year-old he idealizes as the love of his life—in tow, Ernie flees town. In close pursuit is Corporal Cooper, who enlists the aid of two brothers, veterans of World War One: Jack, a sensitive, spiritual man with a potential for brutal violence; and angry, impetuous Dill, still recovering from the premature death of his wife who, while on her deathbed, developed an inexplicable obsession with the then-teenaged Ernie Sickert. When a powerful storm floods the prairie roads, wreaking havoc, Ernie and Loretta take shelter in a one-room schoolhouse where they are discovered by the newly arrived teacher, Vidalia Taggart. Vidalia has her own haunted past, one that has driven her to this stark and isolated place with only the journals of her lover Dov, recently killed in the Spanish Civil War, for company. Dill, arriving at the schoolhouse on Ernie's trail, falls hard and fast for Vidalia—but questions whether he can compete with the impossible ideal of a dead man. Guy Vanderhaeghe, writing at the height of his celebrated powers, has crafted a tale of unrelenting suspense against a backdrop of great moral searching and depth. His is a canvas of lavish, indelible detail: of character, of landscape, of history—in all their searing beauty but all their ugliness, too. Vanderhaeghe does not shrink from the corruption, cruelty, and treachery that pervade the world. Yet even in his clear-eyed depiction of evil—a depiction that frequently and delightfully turns darkly comic—he will not deny the possibility of love, of light. With August Into Winter, Guy Vanderhaeghe has given us a masterfully told, masterfully timed story for our own troubled hearts.

Slash Ranch Hounds by G. W. "Dub" Evans Book Resume:

Some of the greatest hounds in the southwest match wits, courage, and endurance with the elusive cougar, bear, and wildcat. New Mexico and Arizona have produced some truly exceptional hounds and houndsmen over the years, and the Slash Ranch hounds were among the best. Over much of the first half of the 1900’s these hounds with Dub Evans were making a name for themselves all over the southwest. People coming from far and wide to witness them in action as well as for the chance to harvest bear and lion. The Black Range and Gila Wilderness of New Mexico where much of this book takes place, is still as wild and remote today as it was in the previous century. The bottomless labyrinths of canyons and snow-capped peaks a paradise for the sportsman. Home to such famous mountain men and frontiersmen as Ben Lilly, Nat Straw, and Montague Stevens, it is a place that can only be experienced. And what better way to experience it then to follow a pack of great hounds in pursuit? The answer is, there is none. The chase will take you places that few people have seen, and fewer still have tread. A Classic among hound books Slash Ranch hounds details much lion-lore mixed in with great stories of the chase. Much can be learned about the complex workings of the chase, as well as gaining a greater respect for the hounds and houndsmen. Without exaggeration, Evans describes his adventures with truth that can be felt through the pages. From tales of roping lions to catching stock-killing bear and cougar. This is adventure on the western frontier at its finest. So, saddle up, as this is a book for the modern houndsman as well as the armchair adventurer. This is a book to read next the campfire or fireplace, dreaming of hunts bygone and hunts still to come.

Whiskey Before Breakfast by Benjy Griffith Book Resume:

"Benjy Griffith's novel Whiskey before Breakfast is a Southern page-turner, told with humor and an uncanny ear for the Southern idiom. It presents a motley cast of Middle Georgia originals caught up in the struggles of the Great Depression." "The principal characters, thirteen-year-old Newt and his friend Jefferson will remind some readers of Huck Finn and Jim. Both boys have abusive fathers and both deal with challenging situations. While Huck's answer to most problems is an instantly devised tall tale, Newt, faced with even more perilous trials, relies on an innate understanding of what motivates human beings. Newt's compassion, expressed in his gentle protection of his mentally handicapped younger brother, also sets him apart. Jefferson, who experiences a life-changing moment during a rare visit to church, is also a more complex character than his counterpart, Jim. Standing out among the minor characters is Hap, a comical backwoods entrepreneur." "Earl Ham, Newt's profane, tyrannical father, has two main businesses: a sawmill and moonshine whiskey. He decides to move into rival territory, sending Jefferson, an alcoholic who will work for whiskey, along with Newt, who will sell the moonshine and protect the money. But this is Newt's story and it is one that will linger with the reader long after the final pages."--BOOK JACKET.

The Mariposa Folk Festival by Michael Hill Book Resume:

A history of the Mariposa Folk Festival, from its humble roots in Orillia in 1961 to international acclaim and legendary status as a premier folk music gathering. Mariposa began in the heyday of the early 60s “folk boom.” In its more than fifty-five years, it has seen many of the world’s greatest performers grace its stages: Pete Seeger, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Gordon Lightfoot, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Jann Arden, and Serena Ryder. The festival has long held a musical mirror to popular culture in Canada. It thrived during the folk boom years and the singer-songwriter era of the early 70s. Its popularity dipped during the rise of disco and punk as the 70s wore into the early 80s. And it nearly died due to lack of interest in the 90s — the days of grunge and new country, and the golden age of CD sales. Thanks to a recent wave of independent, home-grown music, Mariposa is having a resurgence in the early twenty-first century. Audiences have always come and gone, but the festival has stayed true to its mandate: to promote and preserve folk art in Canada through song, story, dance, and craft.

Nameless Dame by Bart Schneider Book Resume:

The Russian River Valley—laid-back, marijuana-steeped, and off-the-grid—is the backdrop for Bart Schneider’s new mystery featuring the tough and dogged detective Augie Boyer. Augie takes a break from the bite of another Minnesota winter by visiting the California homestead of his longtime friend Bobby Sabbatini, who is celebrating the opening of his poetry-infused tavern, Ginsberg’s Galley. But Augie’s notoriety precedes him, and his arrival is met with a trip to a murder scene. Ruthie Rosenberg, a local who has fallen into a life of drugs and dependence, has been found at The Last Judgment Campground, shot twice in the head. At the request of the Deputy Jesse Coolican, who’s loved Ruthie for years, Augie promises to investigate the case himself. No sooner than he starts to ask questions, Augie discovers the trail leading to Ruthie’s killer—or killers—is tangled with politics, religion, bold-faced lies, and suspicious double-lives. Even his closest friends are part of the fray. Is Ruthie’s murder the work of a copycat? An escalated statement by the religious right? Only an outsider can discover the painful truth—and Augie must work quickly before the insular community buries the truth deep among its ever-growing secrets.

Between Sisters by Evelyn L. Parker Book Resume:

In a world laced with the lethal threads of racism, sexism, classism, and sexual oppression we need a liberating hope that dismantles these intersecting problems that render us into a stupor of chronic despair. In the United States, where the color of your skin can determine life or death, we need hope that will give us life abundantly. In a country where state laws prohibited mixed-race marriages between white and black people as recent as the year 2000 and black/white mixed-race children were demonized by both whites and blacks, our hope must be inspired by the Holy Spirit, God the Creator and Redeemer at work in the world today. This book offers emancipatory hope as this divine hope. With a focus on black/white mixed-race young women and their troubling relationships with women and girls of all ethnicities, Between Sisters provides a process toward emancipatory hope through forgiveness, femaleship, fortitude, and freedom. The process toward emancipatory hope challenges Christian churches to practice forgiveness, femaleship, fortitude, and freedom in a racist society. While the process is not without struggle, it promises that hope through the power of the Holy Spirit will someday usher in a society of justice, peace, and love.

Global Dystopias by Junot Diaz Book Resume:

Stories, essays, and interviews explore dystopias that may offer lessons for the present. As the recent success of Margaret Atwood's novel-turned-television hit Handmaid's Tale shows us, dystopia is more than minatory fantasy; it offers a critical lens upon the present. “It is not only a kind of vocabulary and idiom,” says bestselling author and volume editor Junot Diaz. “It is a useful arena in which to begin to think about who we are becoming.” Bringing together some of the most prominent writers of science fiction and introducing fresh talent, this collection of stories, essays, and interviews explores global dystopias in apocalyptic landscapes and tech futures, in robot sentience and forever war. Global Dystopias engages the familiar horrors of George Orwell's 1984 alongside new work by China Miéville, Tananarive Due, and Maria Dahvana Headley. In “Don't Press Charges, and I Won't Sue,” award-winning writer Charlie Jane Anders uses popularized stigmas toward transgender people to create a not-so-distant future in which conversion therapy is not only normalized, but funded by the government. Henry Farrell surveys the work of dystopian forebear Philip K. Dick and argues that distinctions between the present and the possible future aren't always that clear. Contributors also include Margaret Atwood and award-winning speculative writer, Nalo Hopkinson. In the era of Trump, resurgent populism, and climate denial, this collection poses vital questions about politics and civic responsibility and subjectivity itself. If we have, as Díaz says, reached peak dystopia, then Global Dystopias might just be the handbook we need to survive it. Contributors Charlie Jane Anders, Margaret Atwood, Adrienne Bernhard, Mark Bould, Thea Costantino, Tananarive Due, Henry Farrell, JR Fenn, Maria Dahvana Headley, Nalo Hopkinson, Mike McClelland, Maureen McHugh, China Miéville, Jordy Rosenberg, Peter Ross, Sumudu Samarwickrama

Summer Songs by Michael T. Krieger Book Resume:

During a reckless summer, Barry Tate makes a life-altering decision. Afraid of commitment, and seduced by a woman out of his fantasies, Barry runs away from college and away from his one true love for the fast life of the New Jersey Shore. Not until several years later, when Barry has become a victim of the lifestyle he once pursued, does he realize that he has possibly lost his dreams for good. Then, one day, he hears a song on the radio. It is a summer song, an innocent reminder of a better time, and the inspiring key to re-discovering the one woman he can never stop loving. During one summer quarter at The Ohio State University, Barry Tate unexpectedly meets Karen Lucas, a sensitive, artistic woman. Together they share the kind of love that touches souls. It is the kind of love that others envy and the kind that can survive hardship and can endure the test of time. However, it is also the kind of love that young people question and all too often toss aside without really giving it a chance. Karen and Barry are a perfect match until Barry struggles to discover his identity. He leaves school on a soul-searching journey to the Jersey Shore. Barry wants to become an East Coast disc jockey, and he is lured to the Shore by its mesmerizing surf and by its constant party atmosphere. Making the transition from college student to the real world isnt easy for Barry as he soon falls into a reckless lifestyle, highlighted by his involvement with the seductive and temperamental Eva Fiorelli, a self-centered woman with the endless ability for manipulation. Eva controls Barry physically and emotionally until she becomes more of an addiction than a lover. Her family has suspicious connections, and Evas father introduces Barry to Sal Berdoni, an imposing, wealthy man, who owns several businesses, including a couple radio stations. And all is well once Barry is hired at WTRX, one of Berdonis stations, as a disc jockey. For Barry, he is living his dream that he has had since childhood. This is not so for Eva. Greedy and unconcerned about Barrys feelings, Eva is not impressed by a disc jockeys low salary, so she convinces Barry to make some extra money somehow. Barry is then hired by Berdoni to be a courier for one of his other businesses. His job is to deliver special packages to exclusive and secretive clients. During one such delivery, however, Barry discovers the packages contain cocaine. When he tells Eva about the drugs, she is enthralled instead of frightened as Barry is. She convinces Barry that he needs to try cocaine before he fears it. So, Barry steals some coke from his next delivery. Unfortunately, Berdoni realizes Barrys theft and sends some tough men out to make an example of him. These men negotiate better with their fists than their mouths, and they give Barry a mild beating to deliver the point that he shouldnt steal from Mr. Berdoni. But they then toss him a small package of cocaine before they leave as a token from Mr. Berdoni. Barry gets back into his truck and pulls away. His nose is bleeding from being smacked around and his mind is reeling with thoughts about the cocaine, Mr. Berdoni, and Eva. He doesnt realize that he has just run a stop sign right in front of a police car. The officer pulls Barry over for the routine traffic violation, but becomes aware of Barrys suspicious behavior and accidentally discovers the cocaine in Barrys truck. Now, Barry, who has run away from everything good in his life, finds he can no longer run. He goes to jail, and he loses Eva, his friends, and the support of his family. Once Barry is finally released, he is still without friends, without dreams, and still searching for his identity until a trusted old man, Mr. Zeppo, gives Barry a second chance. Mr. Zeppo owns a quaint, but popular little pizza joint on the boardwalk, and he hires Barry to manage it. Flipping pizzas to pay the rent is not the lifestyle Barry was once used

Black, Kidnapped in the '60S, No Big Deal by McFerrel Jones Book Resume:

My story takes place in Green Cove Springs, Florida, a small town in Clay County, resting on the western banks of the historical St. John's River. Seeing Green Cove from across the river in St. John's County, it looks like a lush green paradise, full with oaks and peppered with tall pines reaching for the sun as they shade the banks with their thick foliage. Our town is located on the St John's at a point where the river makes a 90-degree bend as it flows northward to the Atlantic Ocean. This bend forms a huge cove, where fish and wildlife are abundant. Up the banks near the downtown area is a huge natural spring that constantly flows thousands of gallons of crystal clear water into the St. John's. Conveniently, the public pool, with its surrounding park, was constructed in the path of the flowing spring water. Green Cove is a quiet town with a rich history. She can tell you stories of her past that will keep you spellbound for hours. I am proud to have been born and raised there. Green Cove also has a past that most people would never have known about... that is, until now.
