The Redemption of Marvin Fuster

One Taste Of Redemption [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Redemption of Marvin Fuster by Patrick Sean Lee Book Resume:

"String theory. Ahh! I have a love of music, myself. Had I not gotten involved in politics, I believe I might have taken up the violin seriously, or perhaps the cello. Have you ever been to the symphony, Mr. Fuster?" The governor beamed; a chord deep inside him began to resonate, and a soft breeze rustled across his face and into his heart, as though nature itself was beginning to conspire against him in order to obliterate his initial assessment of Marvin's stature in his world. This man of the streets had a love for music, and that raised him immeasurably in the eyes of Richard Harris. Perhaps he would allow him to stay for an hour or two so that they could discuss Tchaikovsky and Massenet. "No, I believe you are referring to a different type of string, sir. Though I do not pretend to know a great deal about the subject yet, the string this book refers to is a quantum matter, altogether on a different plane than music...though I do like certain types of Bluegrass, and folk music," Marvin corrected him.

A Theology of the Jewish-Christian Reality

One Taste Of Redemption [Pdf/ePub] eBook

A Theology of the Jewish-Christian Reality by Paul Matthews Van Buren Book Resume:

This is the first, and most referred to, Christian systemic theology to make clear for the Church the relevance of the continuing existence of the Jewish people to every aspect of its theology. The three volumes set out to correct a major and central deficiency in the field: that the continuing existence of Israel, the people of God and the people of Jesus, whose ancestors produced by far the largest part of the Church's Bible, and who have lived by the covenant of those Scriptures through the ages, has been either ignored or treated negatively. A Theology of the Jewish-Christian Reality continues to stimulate fresh thinking about the foundations for responsible theological reflection. This second volume makes an original contribution to the Church's theology by drawing on the insights and discoveries of Jewish thought and life. Van Buren argues that God's election of the Jewish people as his witnesses remains in force and calls the Church to listen to that witness. ^IOriginally published in 1983 by Harper and Row Publishers.

Sacred Seeds of Redemption

One Taste Of Redemption [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Sacred Seeds of Redemption by Lela Gillow Buchanan Book Resume:

How to find God at work in the midst of an often confusing world. How often do we struggle to make sense of situations in life, wondering if, by some chance, we are just not following the right directions? Is there some secret life code that we were never taught? Suppose we all, inclusively, hold the tools but are merely unaware that we do? In Sacred Seeds of Redemption, the author reveals her own journey toward understanding and, ultimately, acceptance of the ambiguities and challenges of ordinary life. As you read, you will catch glimpses of both the best and the worst of human behaviors and responses. Using your spiritual eyes and mind, you will also see the “under” story, the redemptive work of a vigilant and loving God—a God who wants His children to accept their intrinsic value and realize their infinite potential. You may laugh a little or shed a few tears. You may see yourself or someone you love in the various characters. Look closely for God’s fingerprints. They are all over these imperfect lives. “An excellent storyteller . . . She has a warm and wise voice [with] a genuine quality to her writing that is not saccharine.” —Writer’s Digest

A Broken Hallelujah: Rock and Roll, Redemption, and the Life of Leonard Cohen

One Taste Of Redemption [Pdf/ePub] eBook

A Broken Hallelujah: Rock and Roll, Redemption, and the Life of Leonard Cohen by Liel Leibovitz Book Resume:

Brings to life a passionate poet-turned-musician and what compels him and his work. Why is it that Leonard Cohen receives the sort of reverence we reserve for a precious few living artists? Why are his songs, three or four decades after their original release, suddenly gracing the charts, blockbuster movie sound tracks, and television singing competitions? And why is it that while most of his contemporaries are either long dead or engaged in uninspired nostalgia tours, Cohen is at the peak of his powers and popularity? These are the questions at the heart of A Broken Hallelujah, a meditation on the singer, his music, and the ideas and beliefs at its core. Granted extraordinary access to Cohen’s personal papers, Liel Leibovitz examines the intricacies of the man whose performing career began with a crippling bout of stage fright, yet who, only a few years later, tamed a rowdy crowd on the Isle of Wight, preventing further violence; the artist who had gone from a successful world tour and a movie star girlfriend to a long residency in a remote Zen retreat; and the rare spiritual seeker for whom the principles of traditional Judaism, the tenets of Zen Buddhism, and the iconography of Christianity all align. The portrait that emerges is that of an artist attuned to notions of justice, lust, longing, loneliness, and redemption, and possessing the sort of voice and vision commonly reserved only for the prophets. More than just an account of Cohen’s life, A Broken Hallelujah is an intimate look at the artist that is as emotionally astute as it is philosophically observant. Delving into the sources and meaning of Cohen’s work, Leibovitz beautifully illuminates what Cohen is telling us and why we listen so intensely.

Slavery and the Culture of Taste

One Taste Of Redemption [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Slavery and the Culture of Taste by Simon Gikandi Book Resume:

It would be easy to assume that, in the eighteenth century, slavery and the culture of taste--the world of politeness, manners, and aesthetics--existed as separate and unequal domains, unrelated in the spheres of social life. But to the contrary, Slavery and the Culture of Taste demonstrates that these two areas of modernity were surprisingly entwined. Ranging across Britain, the antebellum South, and the West Indies, and examining vast archives, including portraits, period paintings, personal narratives, and diaries, Simon Gikandi illustrates how the violence and ugliness of enslavement actually shaped theories of taste, notions of beauty, and practices of high culture, and how slavery's impurity informed and haunted the rarified customs of the time. Gikandi focuses on the ways that the enslavement of Africans and the profits derived from this exploitation enabled the moment of taste in European--mainly British--life, leading to a transformation of bourgeois ideas regarding freedom and selfhood. He explores how these connections played out in the immense fortunes made in the West Indies sugar colonies, supporting the lavish lives of English barons and altering the ideals that defined middle-class subjects. Discussing how the ownership of slaves turned the American planter class into a new aristocracy, Gikandi engages with the slaves' own response to the strange interplay of modern notions of freedom and the realities of bondage, and he emphasizes the aesthetic and cultural processes developed by slaves to create spaces of freedom outside the regimen of enforced labor and truncated leisure. Through a close look at the eighteenth century's many remarkable documents and artworks, Slavery and the Culture of Taste sets forth the tensions and contradictions entangling a brutal practice and the distinctions of civility.
