Living Superior, Arizona, from 1930 to 1950

On Copper Street [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Living Superior, Arizona, from 1930 to 1950 by Joaquin Trujillo Book Resume:

This book tells the history of Superior, Arizona, from the years 1930 to 1950. Superior is located in the central part of the state just inside the southern boundary of the Tonto National Forest. The town was the home of the Magma mine, which was owned by the Magma Copper Company. The Magma mine was an underground, or “hard rock,” copper mine. It operated continuously from 1910 to 1982, was one of the most productive mines in US history, and also included a smelter, mill, and railroad. The book hermeneutically (interpretively) merges into a single narrative the oral histories of 15 persons who were born between 1923 and 1934 and lived in Superior during all or most of 1930 through 1950. The purpose of combining the contributions into a single story was to yield a thicker, more corroborated history of the town than otherwise would have been possible by presenting them separately. Supplementing the narrative are a (1) historiographical description of the town and mine, (2) sociological analysis of their relationship, the community’s solidarity, and the segregation experienced among Mexican, Caucasian, Native American, and African American residents, (3) description of the personal meaning of underground mining, and (4) review of methods.

Justice for Jack

On Copper Street [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Justice for Jack by Sqi Taylor Book Resume:

Sqi Taylor (pronounced SKY) has lived an amazing life, including over ten years of work in law-enforcement, 20 years working with both juvenile and adult offenders and being a foster parent to over 60 youth. She has worked with prisons, directed two non-profit agencies, owned her own business and was once nominated as a "Woman of Distinction" in her community. In Casper, Wyoming she and a handful of believers founded a Therapeutic Riding Academy for people with physical, mental, emotional, financial or spiritual disabilities. Her pen name is an "on-air name" her daughter Lacy gave her, while working as a radio personality as a second job to make ends meet. Interestingly enough, "Sqi" was a female action hero in a card collection of crime fighting characters. Writing mostly as a passionate hobby for over 30 years, this was the "ONE" story she was absolutely compelled to share with the world. A tantalizing, 23 year-old unsolved homicide case, turned into over six years of research, ultimately leading back to a much older unsolved murder in Wyoming in 1949 and a mysterious death in Oklahoma in the 1970's. Eventually, all roads led back to, or were connected with the person who was finally arrested, tried and convicted of Jack Humphrey's murder, nearly twenty-nine years after his death. Whenever innocent blood is spilled in a cold, bizarre manner the emotional, mental and physical devastation is made even greater by either intentional or unintentional actions we naturally blame on "the system." Sad to say, it's not the system, just some people in it, the choices and decisions they make. Mishaps, mistakes, legal or local bias, laziness, political or personal agenda's more often than we realize, only repeatedly, re-victimize families or people we love or that love us. What followed the gruesome, senseless, slaying of Jack Humphrey was one of the most shocking, cruel and riveting persecutions of a victim's family anyone could imagine. How did the murder of an honest, hard-working family man of average means, become such a politically sensitive, unsolved murder case and remain so, for over a quarter of a century? That's the billion dollar question you ultimately must answer for yourself Throughout this tumultuous journey it's clear that good men and women then and now, risk careers, their families, lives and reputations every day, either fighting for truth and justice or falling to the temptation of the oldest and still deadliest of sins: Lust, Lies, Sloth, Greed and Murder! For any one left to navigate through a very tricky, risky, tedious and complex maze, filled with paper and people, Justice for Jack is a must read!

From Meteorite Impact to Constellation City

On Copper Street [Pdf/ePub] eBook

From Meteorite Impact to Constellation City by Oiva W. Saarinen Book Resume:

From Meteorite Impact to Constellation City is a historical geography of the City of Greater Sudbury. The story that began billions of years ago encompasses dramatic physical and human events. Among them are volcanic eruptions, two meteorite impacts, the ebb and flow of continental glaciers, Aboriginal occupancy, exploration and mapping by Europeans, exploitation by fur traders and Canadian lumbermen and American entrepreneurs, the rise of global mining giants, unionism, pollution and re-greening, and the creation of a unique constellation city of 160,000. The title posits the book’s two main themes, one physical in nature and the other human: the great meteorite impact of some 1.85 billion years ago and the development of Sudbury from its inception in 1883. Unlike other large centres in Canada that exhibit a metropolitan form of development with a core and surrounding suburbs, Sudbury developed in a pattern resembling a cluster of stars of differing sizes. Many of Sudbury’s most characteristic attributes are undergoing transformation. Its rocky terrain and the negative impact from mining companies are giving way to attractive neighbourhoods and the planting of millions of trees. Greater Sudbury’s blue-collar image as a union powerhouse in a one-industry town is also changing; recent advances in the fields of health, education, retailing, and the local and international mining supply and services sector have greatly diversified its employment base. This book shows how Sudbury evolved from a village to become the regional centre for northeastern Ontario and a global model for economic diversification and environmental rehabilitation.

The Murder of Andrew Sigler

On Copper Street [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Murder of Andrew Sigler by Glen Carlson Book Resume:

In 1924, in the small ore-mining town of Hurley, Wisconsin, wife and mother Emma Sigler killed her abusive husband, Andrew, with a .32 caliber revolver in the Gogebic Hotel. She phoned Andy Anderson and asked him to help her dispose of the body. Andy drove the back roads until he came to a field and threw Sigler's body across a ditch on the side of the road. Then he left town for a week. When he returned to Hurley, he was arrested for killing Sigler. After being jailed, he bragged to an undercover private detective that he killed Sigler. Andy was sentenced to life imprisonment at the state penitentiary. Emma was arrested as an accessory and was locked up in the county jail for six months until her trial. Shortly before her trial, Emma confessed to murdering her husband in self defense, but she was convicted and received a life sentence in the state penitentiary, and her four children were sent to an orphanage. When she arrived at the prison, it was discovered that Emma was pregnant. After more than 80 years, the circumstances surrounding the murder of Andrew Sigler and the convictions of Andy Anderson and Emma Sigler are being told in this novel based on a crime that had been considered "solved." Glen Carlson, a graduate of the University of Minnesota, has done graduate work at Harvard, and served in both the U.S. Marines and the U.S. Army. He and his wife live in Michigan's Upper Peninsula snowbelt with their dog, Buddy; their cat, Sophie; and their large and powerful snow-blower, Brutus. Andy Anderson was married to Glen's great-aunt, Lillian Randa.
