Jason P. A. Gallant, Ph.D. Chief Psychologist Boys Town Central Florida Behavioral Health Clinic Although research on obesity has accelerated over the past decade, the proportion of Americans considered obese has not declined. Encompassing both schools of thought, Obesity 101 is the first volume to offer a broad and balanced perspective on the complex factors that influence obesity. The text combines current research from multiple perspectives to provide an introductory-level, reader-friendly overview of the history, causes, prevalence, consequences, treatments, and future trends in the prevention of obesity. It integrates research from a vast range of disciplines in the biological and social sciences, as well as education and economics. The text explores the gamut of current treatments for obesity, in addition to prevention programs in schools, the workplace, the community, and the arena of public policy, and offers an assessment of their efficacy. Since obesity is a burgeoning problem in the developing world, as well as having already reached epidemic proportions in many developed nations, the book also discusses international trends. In Defense of Processed Food

Obesity 101 [Pdf/ePub] eBook

In Defense of Processed Food by Robert L. Shewfelt Book Resume:

It has become popular to blame the American obesity epidemic and many other health-related problems on processed food. Many of these criticisms are valid for some processed-food items, but many statements are overgeneralizations that unfairly target a wide range products that contribute to our health and well-being. In addition, many of the proposed dangers allegedly posed by eating processed food are exaggerations based on highly selective views of experimental studies. We crave simple answers to our questions about food, but the science behind the proclamations of food pundits is not nearly as clear as they would have you believe. This book presents a more nuanced view of the benefits and limitations of food processing and exposes some of the tricks both Big Food and its critics use to manipulate us to adopt their point of view. Food is a source of enjoyment, a part of our cultural heritage, a vital ingredient in maintaining health, and an expression of personal choice. We need to make those choices based on credible information and not be beguiled by the sophisticated marketing tools of Big Food nor the ideological appeals and gut feelings of self-appointed food gurus who have little or no background in nutrition.

Social Justice and the Urban Obesity Crisis

Obesity 101 [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Social Justice and the Urban Obesity Crisis by Melvin Delgado Book Resume:

A number of economic, cultural, and contextual factors are driving urban America's obesity crisis, which can create chronic health conditions for those least able to manage them. Considering urban obesity through a social justice lens, this book is the first to help social workers and others develop targeted interventions for effective outcomes. The text dissects the problem of urban obesity in populations of color from individual, family, group, community, and policy perspectives. Beginning with a historical survey of urban obesity in communities of color, anti-obesity policies and programs, and the role of social work in addressing this threat, the volume follows with an analysis of the social, ecological, environmental, and spatial aggravators of urban obesity, such as the food industry's advertising strategies, which promote unhealthy choices; the failure of local markets to provide good food options; the lack of safe exercise spaces; and the paucity of heath education. Melvin Delgado reviews recent national obesity statistics; explores the connection between food stamps and obesity; and reveals the financial and social consequences of the epidemic for society as a whole. He concludes with recommendations for effective health promotion programs, such as youth-focused interventions, community gardens, and community-based food initiatives, and a unique consideration of urban obesity in relation to acts of genocide and national defense.

Obesity: Its Pathogenesis And Management

Obesity 101 [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Obesity: Its Pathogenesis And Management by J.T. Silverstone Book Resume:

What I had in mind when I started planning this book was a collection of scholarly essays, each dealing with the problem of obsesity from a particular point of view, which I hoped would be of value to all those working in the field, either as researchers or as therapists. I approached my task in the spirit of an art collector. Such a person must soon recognise that he or she can never, unless possessed of quite extraordinary powers, (and I certainly am not), gather unto himself all the known examples of the works he wishes to collect. Rather he must select, picking out those items which he believes to be most important in the area he is covering. That is what I have tried to do in this book. As with an art collection, an editor of a series of essays must select both for content and for author. I realise that any such selection is bound to be some what arbitrary, but I have tried to include those topics related to obesity which I consider to be, not only the most relevant, but also those in which the most significant theoretical and practical advances are currently being made. The first four of the seven contributions included in the book are concerned with pathogenesis, and the remaining three with management. The first chapter, by Dr. John Garrow, is an overall review of the metabolic influences on body weight as a whole.
