Transforming Primary Mathematics

I Fell In Love After School 3 [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Transforming Primary Mathematics by Mike Askew Book Resume:

"What is good mathematics teaching? What is mathematics teaching good for? Who is mathematics teaching for? These are just some of the questions addressed in Transforming Primary Mathematics, a highly timely new resource for teachers which accessibly sets out the key theories and latest research in primary maths today. Under-pinned by findings from the largest research programme into primary mathematics funded in recent years, it offers a clear, practical approach to implementing fundamental change in curriculum, classroom environment and teaching styles. Written by one of the top experts in mathematics education, it offers an inspiring, sometimes controversial, and often unconventional look at the subject of mathematics, by: - Endorsing the use of a 'new mathematics' - one based on problem solving, modelling and inquiry, not on abstract rules, memorising, and regurgitation - Arguing that there is more to maths teaching than 'death by a thousand worksheets' - Challenging norms, such as the practice of sorting children into sets based on their perceived mathematical ability - Asking whether this mathematical ability is innate or a result of social practices - Upholding the idea that mathematics teaching is an adaptive challenge, rather than a technical problem - Advocating an environment where teachers are encouraged to take risks - Looking at how best to prepare learners for an unknown future - Encouraging reflection on teachers' own beliefs and values about mathematics. Transforming Primary Mathematics is for all primary school teachers who want to make mathematics welcoming, engaging, inclusive and successful"--Résumé de l'éditeur.

The Story of a Sunday's Child

I Fell In Love After School 3 [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Story of a Sunday's Child by Stevie Mills Book Resume:

When a genetic condition meets an addiction, life becomes difficult for a middle class mid-western girl. The Story Of A Sunday's Child is the true story of such an encounter. After becoming a young adult Stevie finds that her learning problems and physical traces on her body are the result of a genetic condition called Neurofibromatosis. When Stevie tells her fiancée about her problems she expects to be rejected but instead he is sympathetic. Unfortunately he turns out to be a high functioning alcoholic. Stevie watches helplessly as her marriage and her appearance become increasingly influenced by these two factors. It's the story of learning to live with something that cannot be changed; then finding the courage to leave a marriage gone aground on alcoholism. Nothing is sugar coated. Stevie's story is bluntly honest. It is not a "how I learned to live with" type of book. Many questions remain unresolved at the end of the narrative.

Fallen Idols (lacrimae rerum)

I Fell In Love After School 3 [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Fallen Idols (lacrimae rerum) by Leonard Schulman Book Resume:

Fallen Idols is a memoir that begins in the radical sixties in Greenwich Village. The author, the young Leonard Schulman, is living on West Fourth street, just two blocks away from the young emigre from Duluth, Minn.. Bob Dylan.... The author of this charming and engaging memoir, already knows of the young genius, Mr. Dylan, having been exposed to early Dylan by his first love at Brooklyn College. The songs and life of Dylan are to affect our hero in curious ways. In the course of this book he comes to know two photographers--David Gahr and Barry Feinstein--who were close to Mr. Dylan. They tell him stories unheard of before the the great bard. Schulman comes to know other important people too--mostly through his work at Time magazine. How a Brooklyn street kid, got the job and his work at the magazine (for nearly 30 years) is a big part of the book. In the course of his life he meets many people whom he comes to see as 'fallen idols." One of the most important is James Wilde, Time magazine's most intrepid war correspondent. Mr. Wilde becomes a friend and mentor. In the nineties he travels to work for Wilde in Time's Nairobi office as a stringer. Here many adventures occur (worthy of a movie). There are other fallen idols. Too numerous to enumerate. But let me mention at least one--Vittorio Fiorucci--the monstre sacre and great Montreal artist. The creator of Juste Pour Rire's little green man. The book follows in the great literary tradition of Kerouac and Cormac McCarthy as he (Schulman) traverses--over a lifetime--wide areas of the globe--seeking and finding moments of joy and passion and nirvana. It is a journey that will excite you with the tears of things, as he seeks to find, along with all of us--permanence and love. (Another of his fallen idols is Norman Mailer and. . . oh, you'll just have to read the book.) But reader beware, Mr. Schulman's book is not for the faint of heart. So be careful. . . this book may knock you out. Like Hamlet advised "t'were as if a mirror were held up to nature." Human nature, that is. And it ain't always pretty.

I Fell In Love After School 3 [Pdf/ePub] eBook

In Search of the Republican Party by Cleo E. Brown,Richard Ivory Book Resume:

Although Slavery in The United States ended with the end of The Civil War, a new type of bondage developed to reinforce the old status quo and the caste order. Consequently, freedom did not truly occur in The United States until after the work of Civil Rights Activist, DR. Martin Luther King Jr., had been fi rmly entrenched with-in the society. Reinforcing the values of The Civil Rights Movement was the election to The Presidency of Barak Obama. The irony of the Barak Obama win, however, is that Barak Obama is a Democrat. For from 1848 to the present day The Republican Party has been the political home of most prominent minorities in The United States. The values of The Civil Rights Movement have always been the values of The Republican Party. The biographies, therefore, within In Search of The Republican Party, are an attempt to recreate the role of The Republican Party in securing Freedom, Liberty, Human Rights, and Constitutional Guarantees for the minorities.

Play Therapy with Traumatized Children

I Fell In Love After School 3 [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Play Therapy with Traumatized Children by Paris Goodyear-Brown Book Resume:

Introducing a practical model of play therapy for traumatized children Some of the most rewarding work a therapist can do is help a child recover from a traumatic event. But where to begin? A growing body of play therapy literature offers many specific techniques and a variety of theoretical models; however, many therapists are still searching for a comprehensive model of treatment that incorporates solid theoretical constructs with effective play therapy interventions. Clinicians have long recognized that trauma therapy is not just a matter of techniques but a journey with a beginning, middle, and end. In a pioneering contribution to the field, Play Therapy with Traumatized Children: A Prescriptive Approach, the author codifies the process in her model, Flexibly Sequential Play Therapy (FSPT). Integrating non-directive and directive approaches, this components-based model allows for the uniqueness of each child to be valued while providing a safe, systematic journey towards trauma resolution. The FSPT model demystifies play-based trauma treatment by outlining the scope and sequence of posttraumatic play therapy and providing detailed guidance for clinicians at each step of the process. Dramatically demonstrating the process of healing in case histories drawn from fifteen years of clinical practice with traumatized children, Play Therapy with Traumatized Children addresses: Creating a safe place for trauma processing Augmenting the child's adaptive coping strategies and soothing his or her physiology Correcting the child's cognitive distortions Ensuring that caregivers are facilitative partners in treatment Inviting gradual exposure to trauma content through play Creating developmentally sensitive trauma narratives Using termination to make positive meaning of the post-trauma self

Writing without Teachers

I Fell In Love After School 3 [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Writing without Teachers by Peter Elbow Book Resume:

In Writing Without Teachers, well-known advocate of innovative teaching methods Peter Elbow outlines a practical program for learning how to write. His approach is especially helpful to people who get "stuck" or blocked in their writing, and is equally useful for writing fiction, poetry, and essays, as well as reports, lectures, and memos. The core of Elbow's thinking is a challenge against traditional writing methods. Instead of editing and outlining material in the initial steps of the writing process, Elbow celebrates non-stop or free uncensored writing, without editorial checkpoints first, followed much later by the editorial process. This approach turns the focus towards encouraging ways of developing confidence and inspiration through free writing, multiple drafts, diaries, and notes. Elbow guides the reader through his metaphor of writing as "cooking:" his term for heating up the creative process where the subconscious bubbles up to the surface and the writing gets good. 1998 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of Writing Without Teachers. In this edition, Elbow reexamines his program and the subsequent influence his techniques have had on writers, students, and teachers. This invaluable guide will benefit anyone, whether in the classroom, boardroom, or living room, who has ever had trouble writing.
