HomoAmerican - the Secret Society

Homoamerican The Secret Society [Pdf/ePub] eBook

HomoAmerican - the Secret Society by N.A Book Resume:

HomoAmerican - The Secret Society is not merely the story of a gay man growing up in America, but a firsthand portrait of those turbulent and confusing times, observed through unfiltered eyes. Over the years and in my extensive travels, I have strived toward many means of expression and sometimes avenues of escape. I confronted the confines of society and pursued the promise and myths of liberation. As a result of my conspicuous rebellion, that of simply being myself, of not living in disguise, I began to discover another society -- a Secret Society -- of people who have grown up in this world, where lies of omission shape our destiny and keep us apart.Free of the confines of convention we wander along dangerous paths in search our own. In ordinary circles my personal life was a minefield. I have lived as an openly gay man in Iran, was witness to the lavish extravagances and social horror of apartheid South Africa, was arrested on suspicion of murder in Paris and for prostitution in New York. While my stories recount the path that brought me here, mostly they tell the story of the man that I was becoming, pieced together, bit-by-bit, out of shadows, reinvented and reborn, in silence.Still, a recurring theme plays itself out in each episode of my life; the cost of acceptance is always denial, so I am at odds with the world, or so it seems and as I grow older I realize that in ghettos and in stereotypes there is an underlying thread of a war, not with society, but with ourselves. My stories are images of different selves developing in that dangerous void and a message to all people who live in disguise and have no reflection, to people who grow up in isolation and create their lives out of their own imagination. This edition is black cloth covered and gold embossed on the spine with a rich full color sturdy dust jacket.

The Secret of Our Success

Homoamerican The Secret Society [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Secret of Our Success by Joseph Henrich Book Resume:

Humans are a puzzling species. On the one hand, we struggle to survive on our own in the wild, often failing to overcome even basic challenges, like obtaining food, building shelters, or avoiding predators. On the other hand, human groups have produced ingenious technologies, sophisticated languages, and complex institutions that have permitted us to successfully expand into a vast range of diverse environments. What has enabled us to dominate the globe, more than any other species, while remaining virtually helpless as lone individuals? This book shows that the secret of our success lies not in our innate intelligence, but in our collective brains—on the ability of human groups to socially interconnect and learn from one another over generations. Drawing insights from lost European explorers, clever chimpanzees, mobile hunter-gatherers, neuroscientific findings, ancient bones, and the human genome, Joseph Henrich demonstrates how our collective brains have propelled our species' genetic evolution and shaped our biology. Our early capacities for learning from others produced many cultural innovations, such as fire, cooking, water containers, plant knowledge, and projectile weapons, which in turn drove the expansion of our brains and altered our physiology, anatomy, and psychology in crucial ways. Later on, some collective brains generated and recombined powerful concepts, such as the lever, wheel, screw, and writing, while also creating the institutions that continue to alter our motivations and perceptions. Henrich shows how our genetics and biology are inextricably interwoven with cultural evolution, and how culture-gene interactions launched our species on an extraordinary evolutionary trajectory. Tracking clues from our ancient past to the present, The Secret of Our Success explores how the evolution of both our cultural and social natures produce a collective intelligence that explains both our species' immense success and the origins of human uniqueness.

The Animal in the Secret World of Darwin

Homoamerican The Secret Society [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Animal in the Secret World of Darwin by Michel Bergeron Book Resume:

Scientist Charles Darwin discretely opened the possibility of a purely animalistic origin for the human species. He repeatedly insisted that the differences between humans and others were a question of degree only. Sciences were, however, taken in the opposite direction, where these differences cannot have been generated by the natural processes of biological evolution. In The Animal in the Secret World of Darwin, author Michel Bergeron discuses the effects on the sciences caused by the presence of questions on humanity only answerable with religious beliefs. His investigation suggests that significant elements of perceived humanity have remained sufficiently narrowly defined to continue to agree with religious beliefs over the entire period starting with the scientific revolution centuries ago and reaching the present. Instead, he questions, could we be the simple animal who can only live on the belief not to be a simple animal? To alleviate these biases on the sciences of life, Bergeron advocates a different synthesis between Darwinism and Lamarckism. He further asks: How can sciences pretend to a cosmology neutral in term of religious influence since all of its complex mathematical developments were made under the constraint that we can link the present directly to the Big Bang?

The Rational Optimist

Homoamerican The Secret Society [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Rational Optimist by Matt Ridley Book Resume:

Life is getting better—and at an accelerating rate. Food availability, income, and life span are up; disease, child mortality, and violence are down — all across the globe. Though the world is far from perfect, necessities and luxuries alike are getting cheaper; population growth is slowing; Africa is following Asia out of poverty; the Internet, the mobile phone, and container shipping are enriching people’s lives as never before. The pessimists who dominate public discourse insist that we will soon reach a turning point and things will start to get worse. But they have been saying this for two hundred years. Yet Matt Ridley does more than describe how things are getting better. He explains why. Prosperity comes from everybody working for everybody else. The habit of exchange and specialization—which started more than 100,000 years ago—has created a collective brain that sets human living standards on a rising trend. The mutual dependence, trust, and sharing that result are causes for hope, not despair. This bold book covers the entire sweep of human history, from the Stone Age to the Internet, from the stagnation of the Ming empire to the invention of the steam engine, from the population explosion to the likely consequences of climate change. It ends with a confident assertion that thanks to the ceaseless capacity of the human race for innovative change, and despite inevitable disasters along the way, the twenty-first century will see both human prosperity and natural biodiversity enhanced. Acute, refreshing, and revelatory, The Rational Optimist will change your way of thinking about the world for the better.

Catching Fire

Homoamerican The Secret Society [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Catching Fire by Richard W. Wrangham Book Resume:

In this stunningly original book, Richard Wrangham argues that it was cooking that caused the extraordinary transformation of our ancestors from apelike beings to Homo erectus. At the heart of Catching Fire lies an explosive new idea: the habit of eating cooked rather than raw food permitted the digestive tract to shrink and the human brain to grow, helped structure human society, and created the male-female division of labour. As our ancestors adapted to using fire, humans emerged as "the cooking apes". Covering everything from food-labelling and overweight pets to raw-food faddists, Catching Fire offers a startlingly original argument about how we came to be the social, intelligent, and sexual species we are today. "This notion is surprising, fresh and, in the hands of Richard Wrangham, utterly persuasive ... Big, new ideas do not come along often in evolution these days, but this is one." -Matt Ridley, author of Genome

The Gap

Homoamerican The Secret Society [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Gap by Thomas Suddendorf Book Resume:

There exists an undeniable chasm between the capacities of humans and those of animals, but what exactly is the difference between our minds and theirs? In The Gap, psychologist Thomas Suddendorf provides a definitive account of what makes human minds unique and how this disparity arose. He proposes that two innovations account for all of the ways in which our minds appear so distinct: our open-ended ability to imagine and reflect, and our insatiable drive to link our minds together. It is not language or morality that set us apart, but the ability to consider a range of scenarios, real and imagined, past and future. A provocative argument for reconsidering our place in nature, The Gap is essential reading for anyone interested in our evolutionary origins and our relationship with the rest of the animal kingdom.

Settling the Earth by Clive Gamble Book Resume:

How and when did we become the only human species to settle the whole earth? How did our brains become so large? In this book, Clive Gamble sets out to answer these fundamental questions, digging deep into the archives of archaeology, fossil ancestors and human genetics. The wealth of detail in these sources allows him to write a completely new account of our earliest beginnings: a deep history in which we devised solutions not only to the technical challenges of global settlement but also cracked the problem, long before writing and smartphones, of how to live apart yet stay in touch.
