Fish and Fishery Products

Fish And Fisheries [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Fish and Fishery Products by A. Ruiter Book Resume:

Fish and fishery products represent major sources of protein and other nutrients for a large proportion of the world's population. They are also used to a significant extent in animal feeds. This book, written by authors from Europe, the USA and Canada, provides an overview of the chemistry, nutritive value, hygiene and preservation of fish and its products. Thus there are chapters on the composition and nutritive value of fish proteins and other nitrogenous compounds, of fish and shellfish lipids and of fish vitamins and minerals. These are followed by chapters on quality and deterioration, hygienic aspects and contaminants. Cooling and freezing, the most important methods for extending the shelf-life of fish, are then reviewed. Preserved fishery products, including dried, salted, smoked and canned fish are discussed before the final chapter on fish meal and oil, which are shown to be more than just by-products. The book is aimed at advanced students of food science and of human and animal nutrition, as well as professionals such as food inspectors.

Fish and Fisheries at Higher Altitudes

Fish And Fisheries [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Fish and Fisheries at Higher Altitudes by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Book Resume:

The thirteen papers presented in this publication review fish stocks and fisheries of mountainous areas of Asia: Himalayas (Bhutan, Nepal, northern states of India within the Himalayas), Western Ghats (India), Karakoram-Hindu Kush (Pakistan, Afghanistan), Pamir (Tajikistan), Tien Shan (Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan), Altai (Kazakhstan, Mongolia, China), high altitude lakes of Mongolia and those of western China (provinces of Qinghai and Xinjiang [Uighur Autonomous Region] and Xizang [Tibet Autonomous Region]) and Caucasus (Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan). From south to north, fish fauna complexes change from Oriental to Palaearctic. Cool and coldwater streams and rivers support subsistence and/or recreational/sport fisheries, with commercial fisheries practised only in some lakes and reservoirs. While fishing of streams and rivers is largely unmanaged, considerable management effort has gone into some lakes and reservoirs, especially in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and India in order to maintain reasonably high fish catches. The management measures have included translocation and stocking of exotic fish species and regulation of fisheries. For recreational fishery, brown trout has been stocked in rivers and streams of the southern slopes of Himalayas, rainbow trout in some streams of Western Ghats ... etc.

Deep-Sea Demersal Fish and Fisheries

Fish And Fisheries [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Deep-Sea Demersal Fish and Fisheries by N.R. Merrett,R.L. Haedrich Book Resume:

This book deals with the bottom-living fishes of the world's largest ecosystem, the deep-sea. After a brief review of the oceanographic setting, the diversity and ecology of this unique ichthyofauna are considered in detail. The book goes on to deal explicitly with slope fisheries, both developed and developing. The interaction of the ecology of the species involved (examples include orange roughy, grenadier, Greenland halibut and black scabbardfish) with fishing practices and management regimes is then discussed. An ecological framework for management is necessary for the resources to be sustainable it is argued, rather than simply extending approaches used on the Continental Shelf to the deep-sea.
