Le festival des miracles

Festival Of Miracles [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Indigenous Miracles

Festival Of Miracles [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Indigenous Miracles by Edward W. Osowski Book Resume:

"Edward Osowski focuses on a regional set of Nahua Constantines, who, with their conversionary moments generations behind them, sought to lead by example---through patronage, public demonstrations of devotion around chosen holy images, ritual good works and almscollection schemes, and a jealous guardianship of indigenous roles in the pious parading of Christian membership and privilege. Osowski's study banishes older views of a uniformly disoriented native society, trudging drunk and leaderless into the colonial new order, duped into demeaning collaboration and the limits of social climbing. His stress upon a selflegitimizing indigenous nobility, and upon the calculated and instrumental aims of these protagonists, raises vital questions that ought to stimulate new lines of research into Nahua Christian expression, not least those exploring what such vibrant religious membership and shared devotions included, and what they felt like to a widening and multi-ethnic body of participants." ---Kenneth Mills, University of Toronto, co-editor of Colonial Latin America: A Documentary History "A highly significant work of religious and urban history, Osowski's book has much to teach us about Nahua life, Culture, and religious practice in eighteenth-century New Spain." ---Susan Kellogg, author of Law and the Transformation of Aztec Culture, 1500-1700 While King Carlos I of Spain struggled to suppress the Protestant Reformation in the Old World, the Spanish turned to New Spain to promote the Catholic cause, unimpeded by the presence of the "false" Old World religions. To this end, Osowski writes, the Spanish "saw indigenous people as necessary protagonists in the anticipated triumph of the faith." As the conversion of the indigenous people of Mexico proceeded in earnest, Catholic ritual became the medium through which indigenous leaders and Spaniards negotiated colonial hegemony. Indigenous Miracles is about how the Nahua elite of central Mexico secured political legitimacy through the administration of public rituals centered on miraculous images of Christ the King. Osowski argues that these images were adopted as community symbols and furthermore allowed Nahua leaders to "represent their own kingship," protecting their claims to legitimacy. This legitimacy allowed them to act collectively to prevent the loss of many aspects of their culture. Osowski demonstrates how a shared religion admitted the possibility of indigenous agency and new ethnic identities. Consulting both Nahuatl and Spanish sources, Osowski strives to fill a gap in the history of the Nahuas from 1760 to 1810, a momentous time when previously sanctioned religious practices were condemned by the viceroys and archbishops of the Bourbon royal dynasty. His approach synthesizes ethnohistory and institutional history to create a fascinating account of how and why the Nahuas protected the practices and symbols they had appropriated under Hapsburg rule. Ultimately, Osowski's account contributes to our understanding of the ways in which indigenous agency was negotiated in colonial Mexico.

One Hundred Miracles

Festival Of Miracles [Pdf/ePub] eBook

One Hundred Miracles by Zuzana Ruzickova,Wendy Holden Book Resume:

The remarkable memoir of Zuzana Ružicková, Holocaust survivor and world-famous harpsichordist. Zuzana Ružicková grew up in 1930s Czechoslovakia dreaming of two things: Johann Sebastian Bach and the piano. But her peaceful, melodic childhood was torn apart when, in 1939, the Nazis invaded. Uprooted from her home, transported from Auschwitz to Hamburg to Bergen-Belsen, bereaved, starved, and afflicted with crippling injuries to her musician's hands, the teenage Zuzana faced a series of devastating losses. Yet with every truck and train ride, a small slip of paper printed with her favourite piece of Bach's music became her talisman. Armed with this 'proof that beauty still existed', Zuzana's fierce bravery and passion ensured her survival of the greatest human atrocities of all time, and would continue to sustain her through the brutalities of post-war Communist rule. Harnessing her talent and dedication, and fortified by the love of her husband, the Czech composer Viktor Kalabis, Zuzana went on to become one of the twentieth century's most renowned musicians and the first harpsichordist to record the entirety of Bach's keyboard works. Zuzana's story, told here in her own words before her death in 2017, is a profound and powerful testimony of the horrors of the Holocaust, and a testament in itself to the importance of amplifying the voices of its survivors today. It is also a joyful celebration of art and resistance that defined the life of the 'first lady of the harpsichord'– a woman who spent her life being ceaselessly reborn through her music. Like the music of her beloved Bach, Zuzana's life is the story of the tragic transmuted through art into the state of the sublime.

Miracles of the Spirit

Festival Of Miracles [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Miracles of the Spirit by Don Herbert Krug,Ann Parker Book Resume:

From 1991 to 2000, Don Krug and Ann Parker traveled throughout Wisconsin to the urban areas, small towns, and rural communities, talking with artists who created outside the mainstream of university and museum art worlds. Some of the individuals profiled in this book have begun to receive recognition as artists far outside of the state. However, for many, this will be their first introduction to the general public. Featuring 30 color and 188 black-and-white photographs, the book is organized geographically into eastern, central, western, and northern regions of the state. Each regional division begins with a descriptive tour of the land, the life, and the art that characterize the richness of Wisconsin's cultural landscape. Each section also includes artists' narratives, twenty-six in all, transcribed from interviews Krug and Parker conducted in their travels. Here the artists speak for themselves, relating how they began making art, and how, through art, their interests, values, and personal fulfillment are all interwoven.

Miracles for Breakfast

Festival Of Miracles [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Miracles for Breakfast by Danny Brooks Book Resume:

I was lost—in more ways than I can count. I'd lost my way, lost my family, lost my friends. I was totally screwed up from all the acid trips, and the speed and the MDA binges, with strange-coloured animals flitting by me, seeing and hearing things that weren't there. I knew I had done something to myself, that I had crossed a line. I knew I was messed up in a bad way. I'd seen the end of Danny Brooks: in an alleyway with a needle sticking out of my arm. But God had another idea. He wouldn't let me forsake the life He'd given me. My spirit cried out for help from a place of black despair. I believe this book is one of the reasons He kept me alive. He wanted me to share my story of loss and redemption. No matter how badly strung out you are, there is always hope. There is always Him to call on. Faith can make you clean. Faith can keep you sober. Faith can give you your life back, and your dignity, family and friends. My story isn't pretty, but my hope is that it will be a light at the end of the tunnel for you or a loved one who has lost his way. May the way be found. Sincerely, Danny.

Miracles by Roger Kronqvist Book Resume:

Let me make one thing perfectly clear. I am an ordinary man who has spent extraordinary time in prayer, and accordingly, God have given me extraordinary answers to prayers, signs, wonders, visions, miracles, healings, and encounters with God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and angels. Appointed and anointed by God, and by his grace, and mercy, his awesome power, and my love for Jesus, and by yielding to the Holy Spirit, I was endowed with spiritual gifts for a special purpose—to do certain things, not everything. My singleness of purpose is to glorify God’s name in all the earth until Jesus comes. To God is the glory forever! In February 28, 2000, our Sovereign God called me to the Intercessory Prayer Ministry. I was called to stand as a minister at his altar and to stand in between heaven and earth and pray and ask for mercy for his people. To pray for the nations, for soldiers on the battlefield, for the suffering children, youth in crisis, senior citizens, and other people in distress in our community, and to pray for world leaders, politicians, and pastors.
