Boom Town by Sam Anderson Book Resume:

A brilliant, kaleidoscopic narrative of Oklahoma City—a great American story of civics, basketball, and destiny, from award-winning journalist Sam Anderson NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review • NPR • Chicago Tribune • San Francisco Chronicle • The Economist • Deadspin Oklahoma City was born from chaos. It was founded in a bizarre but momentous “Land Run” in 1889, when thousands of people lined up along the borders of Oklahoma Territory and rushed in at noon to stake their claims. Since then, it has been a city torn between the wild energy that drives its outsized ambitions, and the forces of order that seek sustainable progress. Nowhere was this dynamic better realized than in the drama of the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team’s 2012-13 season, when the Thunder’s brilliant general manager, Sam Presti, ignited a firestorm by trading future superstar James Harden just days before the first game. Presti’s all-in gamble on “the Process”—the patient, methodical management style that dictated the trade as the team’s best hope for long-term greatness—kicked off a pivotal year in the city’s history, one that would include pitched battles over urban planning, a series of cataclysmic tornadoes, and the frenzied hope that an NBA championship might finally deliver the glory of which the city had always dreamed. Boom Town announces the arrival of an exciting literary voice. Sam Anderson, former book critic for New York magazine and now a staff writer at the New York Times magazine, unfolds an idiosyncratic mix of American history, sports reporting, urban studies, gonzo memoir, and much more to tell the strange but compelling story of an American city whose unique mix of geography and history make it a fascinating microcosm of the democratic experiment. Filled with characters ranging from NBA superstars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook; to Flaming Lips oddball frontman Wayne Coyne; to legendary Great Plains meteorologist Gary England; to Stanley Draper, Oklahoma City's would-be Robert Moses; to civil rights activist Clara Luper; to the citizens and public servants who survived the notorious 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah federal building, Boom Town offers a remarkable look at the urban tapestry woven from control and chaos, sports and civics.

A Libertarian Walks Into a Bear by Matthew Hongoltz-Hetling Book Resume:

A tiny American town's plans for radical self-government overlooked one hairy detail: no one told the bears. Once upon a time, a group of libertarians got together and hatched the Free Town Project, a plan to take over an American town and completely eliminate its government. In 2004, they set their sights on Grafton, NH, a barely populated settlement with one paved road. When they descended on Grafton, public funding for pretty much everything shrank: the fire department, the library, the schoolhouse. State and federal laws became meek suggestions, scarcely heard in the town's thick wilderness. The anything-goes atmosphere soon caught the attention of Grafton's neighbors: the bears. Freedom-loving citizens ignored hunting laws and regulations on food disposal. They built a tent city in an effort to get off the grid. The bears smelled food and opportunity. A Libertarian Walks Into a Bear is the sometimes funny, sometimes terrifying tale of what happens when a government disappears into the woods. Complete with gunplay, adventure, and backstabbing politicians, this is the ultimate story of a quintessential American experiment -- to live free or die, perhaps from a bear.

Marathi, an Indo-Aryan language, is the official language of Maharashtra, including Mumbai. Father Thomas Stephens, the first English traveler to Goa, a pioneer linguist, wrote Christa Puran in Marathi (1616) and Arte da Lingoa Canarim in Portuguese, printed in (1640). The latter is a grammar of Konkani, a language closely related to Marathi. It is the first grammar of its kind marking a new grammatical tradition for modern Indo-Aryan languages. The present volume contains an extensive account of Marathi phonology, morphology, word formation and syntax. It succinctly describes the accentual system, special compound verb forms, unique pronominal anaphors, complex agreement due to split ergative system, and special pronominal marking. The book also contains a case study of a child’s acquisition of Marathi and an essay on Women’s Language, the two topics that are increasingly becoming relevant to the grammar.

TASKs for democracy by Pascale Mompoint-Gaillard,Ildikó Lázár Book Resume:

60 activities to learn and assess transversal attitudes, skills and knowledge! TASKs for democracy is a handbook of 60 activities, developed within the Council of Europe Pestalozzi Programme Community of Practice, for practitioners in formal and non-formal educational settings to learn and assess the attitudes, skills, values and knowledge needed to support democratic culture. Democratic culture is more than institutions, laws and procedures. While essential elements of democracy, they do not in themselves make societies democratic: they only work when rooted in what we call “democratic culture” or “a culture of democracy”, the set of attitudes and behaviours required to make democratic institutions and democratic laws function in practice. Competences for democratic culture are therefore essential for building the kind of society in which we would like to live. This 2nd edition of TASKs for democracy supports the Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture endorsed by the Council of Europe Standing Conference of Ministers of Education in April 2016. This publication aims to help build European societies characterised by a culture of democracy and human rights. This is a formidable task and it can only be achieved if European teachers and trainers rise to the challenge with competence and enthusiasm. The collection of learning and “re-learning” activities will support them to promote the development of competences for a democratic culture in their day-to-day educational practice.

The Material Culture of Tableware by Jeanne Morgan Zarucchi Book Resume:

The Material Culture of Tableware is a fascinating and authoritative study of patterned tableware in the US. The book undertakes a visual analysis of Johnson Brothers patterns of tableware pottery, with reference to comparable designs by other British companies, such as Spode and Adams. It examines how this practical genre reflected the aesthetic values, sense of identity and aspirations of the American consumers who purchased its products. The study also sheds light on British opinions and understandings of American culture. The book's chronological organization shows how tableware designs reflected the cultural developments of American society during the long 20th century. From status-seeking 1890s beaux-arts patterns and the nostalgic historical scenes of the 1930s, to whimsical 1960s patterns and the contemporary motifs of the 1970s, The Material Culture of Tableware tells a compelling story about who 20th century middle-class Americans were and wanted to be.

Aspen and the American Dream by Jenny Stuber Book Resume:

How is it possible for a town to exist where the median household income is about $73,000, but the median home price is about $4,000,000? Boring into the "impossible" math of Aspen, Colorado, Stuber explores how middle-class people have found a way to live in this supergentrified town. Interviewing a range of residents, policymakers, and officials, Stuber shows that what resolves the math equation between incomes and home values in Aspen, Colorado—the X-factor that makes middle-class life possible—is the careful orchestration of diverse class interests within local politics and the community. She explores how this is achieved through a highly regulatory and extractive land use code that provides symbolic and material value to highly affluent investors and part-year residents, as well as less-affluent locals, many of whom benefit from an array of subsidies—including an extensive affordable housing program—that redistribute economic resources in ways that make it possible for middle-class residents to live there. Stuber further examines how Latinos, who provide much of the service work in Aspen and who tend to live outside the town, fit into the social geography of one of the most unequal places in the country. Overall, Stuber argues that the Aspen's ability to balance the interests of its diverse class constituencies is not a foregone conclusion; rather, it is the result of efforts by local stakeholders—citizens, government, developers, and vacationers—to preserve the town’s unique feel and value, and "keep Aspen, Aspen" in all its complex dynamics.

One Good Deed by David Baldacci Book Resume:

In this fast-paced historical thriller, #1 New York Times bestselling author David Baldacci introduces Archer, a WWII veteran forced to investigate a small-town murder -- or risk returning to prison. It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of do's and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job--and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail. Within a single night, his search for gainful employment--and a stiff drink--leads him to a local bar, where he is hired for what seems like a simple job: to collect a debt owed to a powerful local businessman, Hank Pittleman. Soon Archer discovers that recovering the debt won't be so easy. The indebted man has a furious grudge against Hank and refuses to pay; Hank's clever mistress has her own designs on Archer; and both Hank and Archer's stern parole officer, Miss Crabtree, are keeping a sharp eye on him. When a murder takes place right under Archer's nose, police suspicions rise against the ex-convict, and Archer realizes that the crime could send him right back to prison . . . if he doesn't use every skill in his arsenal to track down the real killer.

Britain's New Towns by Anthony Alexander Book Resume:

The New Towns Programme of 1946 to 1970 was one of the most substantial periods of urban development in Britain. The New Towns have often been described as a social experiment; so what has this experiment proved? This book covers the story of how these towns came to be built, how they aged, and the challenges and opportunities they now face as they begin phases of renewal. The new approaches in design throughout their past development reflect changes in society throughout the latter half of the twentieth century. These changes are now at the heart of the challenge of sustainable development. The New Towns provide lessons for social, economic and environmental sustainability. These lessons are of great relevance for the regeneration of twentieth century urbanism and the creation of new urban developments today.

Dreams of a Farmer's Wife by Jeanette Dyess Ryan Book Resume:

True stories of a city man from Kentucky who came to rural Alabama where he married a country girl in the 1950’s. His heart’s desire was to own a few acres of land and become a farmer even though his spouse never desired to be a “A Farmer’s Wife.” However, she toiled alongside her husband and children as she held fast to her dreams of someday building her dream house... Jeanette fondly looks back on the years when the rains came, the crops flourished and the market prices were advantageous. During those years her family felt as if the hard labor and long hours paid off. Life on the farm was demanding with little time for family vacations, but her children lived life to the fullest as they discovered adventures on the farm by chasing lightening bugs, walking through the fresh plowed dirt, riding horses and fishing the creeks. Having walked in the farmer’s wife’s shoes during productive times and also during times of adversity and crop failures, the author understood her neighbor’s pain and tears when their family homes and farm land went into foreclosure. She realized that if not for the grace of God, it could have been their home, their property. She recalls gazing at a field of corn stalks drying because of drought and praying for rain as she searched the sky for a tiny dark rain cloud. Her family endured the lean years along with the productive years. Starting their life together with nothing, God met their needs and later blessed their farming endeavors. They lived the American dream of owning a few acres in the country to farm and a new home to enjoy.

Trip three to the Ukraine was an out of the ordinary journey, primarily for one reason: The Maidan. To visit this, in the meantime, world famous city square during the major protest movement known as the Euromaidan was the reason why I returned to this nation at this time, impromptu and in the dead of winter. Wanting to make the best out of this tour, I also visited my friends on the Crimea. Thus I went on another road trip, this time from Kiev directly to Simferopol. The mid-winter season would make this journey a somewhat adventurous undertaking, being in a country already fraught with bad roads. Another very memorable place visited was a former secret submarine base by the small Crimean town of Balaklava.

Herr Preysing also checks in, the director of a family firm that isn’t as flourishing as it appears, who would never imagine that Kringelein, his underling, a timorous petty clerk he’s bullied for years, has also come to Berlin, determined to live at last now that he’s received a medical death sentence. All these characters and more, with all their secrets and aspirations, come together and come alive in the pages of Baum’s delicious and disturbing masterpiece.

I can't believe I fell for it. It was still dark when I woke up this morning. As soon as my eyes opened I knew where I was. A low-ceilinged rectangular building made entirely of whitewashed concrete. There are six little rooms along the main corridor. There are no windows. No doors. The lift is the only way in or out. What's he going to do to me? What am I going to do? If I'm right, the lift will come down in five minutes. It did. Only this time it wasn't empty . . . Praise for The Bunker Diary: [Kevin Brooks'] pacey plots . . . have made him a cult among teens. Narratives of Vulnerability in Museums by Meighen Katz Book Resume:

Narratives of Vulnerability in Museums is a study of the challenges museums face when they present narratives of instability, uncertainty, and fear in their exhibitions. As a period of sustained societal and personal vulnerability, the Great Depression remains a watershed era in American history. It is an era when iconic visual culture of deprivation mixes in the popular imagination with groundbreaking government policy and has immense potential for museums, but this is accompanied by significant challenges. Analysing a range of case studies, the book explores both the successes and obstacles involved in translating historical narratives of vulnerability to the exhibition floor. Incorporating an innovative, trans-genre museological model, the book draws connections between exhibitions of history, art, and technology, as well as heritage sites, focused on a single era. Employing interpretations of housing, preserved and reconstructed, to discuss ideas of belonging and community, the book also examines the power of the iconic national story and the struggle for local relevance through discussions on strikes and industrial action. Finally, it examines the use of fine art in history exhibitions to access the emotional aspects of historical experience. The result is a volume that considers both how societies talk about less celebratory aspects of history, but also the expectations placed on museums as interpreters of the public narrative and agents of change. Narratives of Vulnerability in Museums makes a significant contribution to discourses of museum and heritage studies, of interwar history, of the social role of cultural institutions, and to vulnerability and resilience studies. As such, it should be essential reading for scholars and students working in these disciplines, as well as architecture, cultural studies, and human geography.

The Agglomeration of the Animation Industry in East Asia by Kenta Yamamoto Book Resume:

This book will be of interest to scholars and students of Asian studies, cultural industries, economic geography, and related areas of study. It discusses the results of a microscopic survey focusing on topics such as how animation studios form business relationships and how workers gain skills in the industry. The methodology was based on traditional Japanese economic geographical methods. The study also examines macroscopic issues such as why industrial agglomerations are formed in metropolises, why metropolises develop mutual networks, and how a type of cultural product is created in the metropolises. The methodology uses case studies of the animation industries in Japan, South Korea, and China. The detailed analysis covers the process of the industry’s agglomeration within the East Asian metropolises of Tokyo, Seoul, and Shanghai as well as the division of labor among them. In addition, the transaction relationships among animation studios are examined, together with the promotion of the industry in the peripheral region of Okinawa, Japan. Differences in work styles and output among these cities are also examined. The research presented in this book contributes to understanding the spatial structure and reality of creativity in an innovative industry, particularly the East Asian content industry.

The Numinous Site by Julio Marzan,Julio Marzán Book Resume:

"Luis Pales Matos, a white man who began the poesia negra movement in Latin America in 1925, is the subject of The Numinous Site, Julio Marzan's latest book. Unlike its English-language counterpart, poesia negra refers to its subject and not the poet's race, so white poets are credited with writing poesia negra." "Pales's poesia afroantillana popularized the "dark" forces (African roots and unprestigious language) that were the white society's antimatter, an antipoetic consciousness that, complemented and refined by other poesia negra, opened the Latin American poem." "Perhaps influenced by Heidegger, throughout his work Pales reiterated his obsession with the frontier where the mundane touches the spiritual or metaphysical. His poems take the reader on a passage to an encounter with the imagistic representation of that force informing the soul of the individual, the collectivity, and the physical world. All his poems take us on that passage, including his socially conscious Afro-Antillean poems, because they originate from Pales's sense that language, including "Boricua," is synonymous with time and our sense of being. For Luis Pales Matos, poesia was an altar, and style a liturgy that, whether performed in drumbeats or words, invoked the poetic essence that he called the "numen.""--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Company Towns of the Pacific Northwest by Linda Carlson Book Resume:

2004 Washington State Book Award Finalist "Company town." The words evoke images of rough-and-tumble loggers and gritty miners, of dreary shacks in isolated villages, of wages paid in scrip good only at price-gouging company stores, of paternalistic employers. But these stereotypes are outdated, especially for those company towns that flourished well into the twentieth century. In Company Towns of the Pacific Northwest, Linda Carlson provides a more balanced and realistic look at these "intentional communities." Drawing from residents reminiscences, contemporary newspaper accounts, company newsletters and histories, census and school records, and site plans, Carlson looks at towns in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. She examines how companies went about controlling housing, religion, taxes, liquor, prostitution, and union organizers. This vibrant history gives the details of daily life in communities that were often remote and subject to severe weather. It looks at the tragedies and celebrations: sawmill accidents, mine cave-ins, and avalanches as well as Independence Day picnics, school graduations, and Christmas parties. Finally, it tells what happened when people left--when they lost their jobs, when the family breadwinner died or was disabled, when the mill closed. An ample selection of illustrations, most never previously published, broadens the appeal of this lively and well-researched book.

The Giant’s Journey By: Erik Kiessling Enrique has all of the typical college student problems. Grades, his part-time job, an obnoxious roommate, the fact that he’s really a 400-year-old fae named Burgone who's destined to either save the world or die trying. Typical stuff. Add that to the fact that he's stumbled into a forbidden romance with a rival clan of fae and the top general of the kingdom either wants him by his side or six feet under. Plus there's a dragon and some unicorns (because there always have to be dragons and unicorns). All he has going for him is some advice from an elderly couple, a talking dinosaur, and a couple decades of action movies for guidance. Okay, maybe it's not so typical.

Searching for Freedom by K. Essence Book Resume:

Searching for Freedom: The Nat Turner Revolt is a story about a young African boy who had matured into a man being considered a fugitive of American law. The information provided in this story is for the readers of this story to think about Nat Turner more as a person instead of a fugitive of the law or a degraded slave. Many of the books published about Nat Turner have a lack of information regarding Nat Turner's real life, the people of the town of South Hampton, and the federal government of the United States when it was just considered the government of the North American continent. A few of the political figures mentioned in this book such as Sir James Monroe, Sir John Tyler, and Sir Andrew Jackson were used to bring more life to the story to explain to the readers how things were going based on government planning and how life was for the people living in the early 1800s. Nat Turner's true life story is meant to be known by not just the African American nationality but by all the world's nationalities because of what Nat Turner stood for during his life. Nat Turner was against the enslavement of black Africans as well as the enslavement of other nationalities. He believed that all men have the right to be independent to raise their own families and to choose their own paths. This story also explains how Nat Turner had found love and the new associations that he had made after he had escaped from his slave owner's residence. Nat Turner had freed many enslaved blacks, and he and his men had made new families after they had broken free from the custody of their slave owners. Benjamin Turner, Nat Turner's slave owner, had traveled from place to place looking for Nat Turner for several years until Nat Turner was found. Nat Turner had visited quite a few places during his lifetime, and he had also made several children with a few different women. Nat Turner had done a lot during his life compared to the enslaved blacks, and he was still a very young man when he was killed. Nat Turner had become a legend behind the moves that he had chosen to make, and he had made two very close friends who were considered his brothers who had escaped from their slave owner's residence with Nat. Nat was a great leader, and some people even considered him to be a king behind the way that he had taken a stand for himself and for his people to be free.

Dream Cities by Wade Graham Book Resume:

From the acclaimed landscape designer, historian and author of American Eden, a lively, unique, and accessible cultural history of modern cities—from suburbs, downtown districts, and exurban sprawl, to shopping malls and “sustainable” developments—that allows us to view them through the planning, design, architects, and movements that inspired, created, and shaped them. Dream Cities explores our cities in a new way—as expressions of ideas, often conflicting, about how we should live, work, play, make, buy, and believe. It tells the stories of the real architects and thinkers whose imagined cities became the blueprints for the world we live in. From the nineteenth century to today, what began as visionary concepts—sometimes utopian, sometimes outlandish, always controversial—were gradually adopted and constructed on a massive scale in cities around the world, from Dubai to Ulan Bator to London to Los Angeles. Wade Graham uses the lives of the pivotal dreamers behind these concepts, as well as their acolytes and antagonists, to deconstruct our urban landscapes—the houses, towers, civic centers, condominiums, shopping malls, boulevards, highways, and spaces in between—exposing the ideals and ideas embodied in each. From the baroque fantasy villages of Bertram Goodhue to the superblocks of Le Corbusier’s Radiant City to the pseudo-agrarian dispersal of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Broadacre City, our upscale leafy suburbs, downtown skyscraper districts, infotainment-driven shopping malls, and “sustainable” eco-developments are seen as never before. In this elegantly designed and illustrated book, Graham uncovers the original plans of brilliant, obsessed, and sometimes megalomaniacal designers, revealing the foundations of today’s varied municipalities. Dream Cities is nothing less than a field guide to our modern urban world. Illustrated with 59 black-and-white photos throughout the text.

Lectures on Russian Literature by Vladimir Nabokov Book Resume:

The acclaimed author presents his unique insights into the works of great Russian authors including Tolstoy, Dostoevski, Gogol, Gorki, and Chekhov. In the 1940s, when Vladimir Nabokov first embarked on his academic career in the United States, he brought with him hundreds of original lectures on the authors he most admired. For two decades those lectures served as the basis for Nabokov’s teaching, first at Wellesley and then at Cornell, as he introduced undergraduates to the delights of great fiction. This volume collects Nabokov’s famous lectures on 19th century Russian literature, with analysis and commentary on Nikolay Gogol’s Dead Souls and “The Overcoat”; Ivan Turgenev’s Fathers and Sons; Maxim Gorki’s “On the Rafts”; Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina and The Death of Ivan Ilych; two short stories and a play by Anton Chekhov; and several works by Fyodor Dostoevski, including Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, and The Possessed. This volume also includes Nabokov’s lectures on the art of translation, the nature of Russian censorship, and other topics. Featured throughout the volume are photographic reproductions of Nabokov’s original notes. “This volume . . . never once fails to instruct and stimulate. This is a great Russian talking of great Russians.” —Anthony Burgess Introduction by Fredson Bowers

Pause Now by Lyla Yastion Book Resume:

This handbook in practical spirituality proposes that the level of stress, violence, fear and disconnect from Nature in the global society has risen in direct proportion to a fall in the collective level of conscious awareness. In order to reverse this trend a conscious impulse is required. Human beings need to rediscover the mystical underpinning of all religions and the engine of spiritual transformation: the art of presence. Only by learning to be present and stay present is it possible to dissolve harmful energy - in the form of false opinions and negative feelings - and create positive energy that imbues actions with intelligence, compassion and respect for the sacredness of all life. To this end, a practice in sensory awareness is offered. It is called 'the Pause'. Pausing affirms the body-mind continuum by empowering the senses as conduits of conscious awareness. When pausing is then applied to ordinary activities such as speaking, working, thinking and relating to others, spiritual evolution accelerates. The fruit of a re-awakened life is healing — for ourselves, for society, and for the entire Earth community.
