Song's theology is a startling rebuke to Christologies centered either in historical-critical searches or church doctrines. For Song, theology is the biography of God, and God's reign is evident in stories of God's saving presence in Jesus. The reign of God in Jesus "becomes manifest through movements of people to be free from the shackles of the past, to change the status quo of the present, and to have a role to play in the arrival of the future".

Sub Specie Aeternitatis by Nikolay Alexandrovich Berdyaev Book Resume:

The philosophical foundation and defense of religion and mysticism is an important task of our era, and in defending this we must be not apologists, but free researchers and seekers. My experiences of philosophical journalism, attempts to consider the temporary sub specie aeternitatis - a feasible contribution to the philosophical defense of religious-cultural and religious-social ideas. We are accused that in such a hot and difficult time we are busy with eternity, we are interested in God, but this is the strangest and most unacceptable of all objections. Say that there is no eternity and there is no God, this is understandable and this will be an objection in essence. But let the reality of God for one second - and you will have to admit that at all times you should think about Him and look for ways to unite with Him, and especially at the moment of storm, earthquake and fire. Long live Reason and may common sense, the kingdom of darkness, the kingdom of sober, rational madness be hidden! The concept of personality, human individuality is unthinkable without freedom, as an internal definition of its nature. The creative acts of the individual are free, but it [the individual] is bound by the creative acts of other personalities and by her belonging to the world whole, therefore, at every step, the personality is faced with “necessity”, which takes the forms of oppression and enslavement 93... Therefore, the inner spiritual freedom of the human person can and should be opposed to imposed necessity, oppression, enslavement, that is, external lack of freedom. Fighting for freedom for himself and for others, an internally free person realizes his destiny in the world, puts his creative stamp on it, defends his right to be determined only by his freedom, his inner creative power, which collides with a bound and imposed world. And that unfree object, which the positivists call man, cannot oppose itself to anything, to any external oppression, to any lack of freedom, it is not able to introduce any creative and opposing principle into this bound, slave world. Only a free [man], a spiritual being, whose roots lie in the bottomless depths of being, can strive for ultimate freedom, in a position to fight for it, while an unfree piece of nature would remain in slavery until the end of time. And we are now inspired by an undefined social and state system, historically limited and in reality bourgeois, but by the inalienable rights of the individual, which constitute absolute, superclass and supra-historical benefits.

The Gospel According to Job by Mike Mason Book Resume:

Anyone who has suffered knows that there is no such thing as "getting a grip on oneself" or "pulling oneself up by the bootstraps. The only bootstrap in the Christian life is the Cross," says Mason. "Sometimes laying hold of the cross can be comforting, but other times it is like picking up a snake." Job knew this firsthand. From him we learn that there are no easy answers to suffering. That the mark of true faith is not happiness, but rather, having one's deepest passions be engaged by the enormity of God. And through Job we learn the secret of the gospel: that "mercy is the permission to be human." The Lord never gave Job an explanation for all he had been through. His only answer was Himself. But as Job discovered, that was enough. The Gospel According to Job sensitively brings the reader to this realization, using a devotional commentary format that reminds them that it's all right to doubt, to be confused, to wonder–in short, to be completely human. But what will heal us and help us endure is a direct, transforming encounter with the living God.

“What did he say?” “He made himself equal with God!” “This blasphemer must die!” There were many who heard what he said and stopped following him because his teaching was offensive to them. Today many do not know what he actually said and often his words are ignored or misrepresented. The history of the church is one of divisions over what he taught and many counterfeit accounts of his teaching have gained acceptance. This account will surprise and perhaps even shock many. What did he look like? What did he teach about heaven and hell? What happens to us when we die? What day did he die on? What caused his death? What day did he rise from the dead? Why will he return? What was his message in one short sentence? We have got it all wrong

Space, Place and Religious Landscapes by Darrelyn Gunzburg,Bernadette Brady Book Resume:

Exploring sacred mountains around the world, this book examines whether bonding and reverence to a mountain is intrinsic to the mountain, constructed by people, or a mutual encounter. Chapters explore mountains in England, Scotland, Wales, Italy, Ireland, the Himalaya, Japan, Greece, USA, Asia and South America, and embrace the union of sky, landscape and people to examine the religious dynamics between human and non-human entities. This book takes as its starting point the fact that mountains physically mediate between land and sky and act as metaphors for bridges from one realm to another, recognising that mountains are relational and that landscapes form personal and group cosmologies. The book fuses ideas of space, place and material religion with cultural environmentalism and takes an interconnected approach to material religio-landscapes. In this way it fills the gap between lived religious traditions, personal reflection, phenomenology, historical context, environmental philosophy, myths and performativity. In defining material religion as active engagement with mountain-forming and humanshaping landscapes, the research and ideas presented here provide theories that are widely applicable to other forms of material religion.

For all who are wondering how the pieces fit into the jigsaw of God's revelation, Colin Smith has provided an answer, which is refreshingly simple, biblically accurate, and will prove phenomenally helpful to the serious Bible student and the new beginner alike. — Alistair Begg, senior pastor, Parkside Church In Unlocking the Bible Story, Colin Smith moves gradually through portions of the Bible to unfold its narrative and explain major themes. In volume 4 he moves through the New Testament epistles, which contain the most crystalized expression of Christian theology and practice. Christ is the crux of the entire Bible story, from the first page to the last. Volume 4 encourages and strengthens readers to discover the life-changing truth of the gospel as articulated in the New Testament epistles. Includes the study guide formerly sold separately. One of the most urgent needs in the church today is for a crisp and comprehensive knowledge of the Bible's storyline. To grasp how the sacred history moves from Genesis to Revelation not only brings fresh insight into how the Bible hangs together, and what each part contributes to the whole, but also is crucial for developing a Christian worldview. Colin Smith has met these needs admirably. I hope these volumes will circulate widely and be read and re-read. — D. A. Reflection on the Death of a Porcupine by D.H. Lawrence Book Resume:

This collection of essays by the author of Lady Chatterley’s Loverpresents his musings on literature, politics and philosophy in a newly restored text. Though D. H. Lawrence was one of the great writers of the twentieth century, his works were severely corrupted by the stringent house-styling of printers and the intrusive editing of timid publishers. A team of scholars at Cambridge University Press has worked for more than thirty years to restore the definitive texts of D. H. Lawrence in The Cambridge Editions. Between 1915–1925, D. H. Lawrence wrote a series of “philosophicalish” essays covering topics ranging from politics to nature, and from religion to education. Varying in tone from lighthearted humor to spiritual meditation, they all share the underlying themes of Lawrence’s mature work: “Be thyself.” As far as possible, the editors of the Cambridge Editions series have restored these essays to their original form as Lawrence wrote them. A discussion of the history of each essay is provided, and several incomplete and unpublished essays are reproduced in an appendix.

Daysprings by Sam Portaro Book Resume:

“Dayspring, my dictionary tells me, is an archaic word meaning ‘dawn.' But I have chosen Daysprings as the title for this collection of meditations for the several meanings in the ancient word and its components. I hope these brief reflections shed new light on old, familiar passages and illuminate the way through new ones. I also hope these pieces will prove to be springboards to new and creative meditation for readers, pastors, and preachers, and that they will find within these pieces an extra buoyancy for each day. Lastly, I hope these thoughts will flow like fresh, living waters through days of fast and feast, bringing refreshment. —from the Preface In his accompanying volume to Brightest and Best: A Companion to the Lesser Feasts and Fasts, Sam Portaro offers meditations for each of the weekdays for the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Holy Week, and Easter. Following the lectionary texts for each day, he focuses on the seasonal themes of incarnation, manifestation, suffering, redemption, and resurrection, showing how the eternal truths of the gospel shed light on the ordinary and extraordinary events of our lives. Solidly grounded in the prayers and scriptures of these seasonal liturgies, Portaro's meditations bring fresh and powerful—sometimes pointed—insights for those who follow the daily readings and prayers of these days of the weeks in the church year as found in Lesser Feasts and Fasts.

Knowledge and the University by Ronald Barnett,Søren S.E. Bengtsen Book Resume:

For hundreds of years, knowledge has been central in understanding the university. Over recent decades, however, it is the economic value of knowledge that has come to the fore. Now, in a post-truth world, knowledge is also treated with suspicion and has become a vehicle for ideologies. Knowledge and the University combats all these ways of thinking. Its central claim is that knowledge is of value because of its connection with life. Knowledge is of life, from life, in life and for life. With an engaging philosophical discussion, and with a consideration of the evolution of higher education institutions, this book: Examines ways in which research, teaching and learning are bound up with life; Looks to breathe new life into the university itself; Widens the idea of the knowledge ecology to embrace the whole world; Suggests new roles for the university towards culture and the public sphere. Knowledge and the University is a radical text that looks to engender nothing less than a new spirit of the university. It offers a fascinating read for policy makers, institutional leaders, academics and all interested in the future of universities.

One Life by Anne-Marie Seidenschnur Book Resume:

Did you ever ask yourself whether you have lived before? Did you ask where or when? If you already believe in reincarnation, read this fascinating story from prehistoric Egypt about a previous life of the author that begins before birth and ends after death. This was the life of a priestess and pharaoh approx. 6000 years ago when Egypt was at its prime and the priesthood enlightened. It’s an inspirational tale, and you cannot help wondering - why is our world not a better place? And if you don’t believe in reincarnation – why not read the story and get to know a nearly Utopian society and ask yourself again: Is it really impossible that this did happen? And is it not possible that it may happen again? Memories of Joan Grant’s historical novels from past lives and Elisabeth Haich’s spiritual classic: “Initiation” come back to life. Joan Grant was the first to develop her gift of “far memory” into a form of reincarnation therapy with her psychiatrist husband, a therapy which is now popular worldwide.

Studies on Saving Faith by Arthur Pink Book Resume:

It is generally recognized that spirituality is at a low ebb in Christendom, and not a few perceive that sound doctrine is rapidly on the wane yet many of the Lord's people take comfort from supposing that the Gospel is still being widely preached and that large numbers are being saved thereby. Alas, their optimistic supposition is ill-founded and sandy grounded. This important book by Arthur Pink invites us to reflect on faith and meditate on the Word of God. A text based entirely on the Holy Bible.

Conrad, Faulkner, and the Problem of NonSense by Maurice Ebileeni Book Resume:

Maurice Ebileeni explores the thematic and stylistic problems in the major novels of Joseph Conrad and William Faulkner through Jacques Lacan's psychoanalytic theories. Against the background of the cultural, scientific, and historic changes that occurred at the turn of the 20th century, describing the landscape of ruins bequeathed to humanists by the forefathers of the Counter-Enlightenment movement (Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Dostoyevsky, and Baudelaire), Ebileeni proposes that Conrad and Faulkner wrote against impossible odds, metaphorically standing at the edge of a chaotic abyss that initially would spill over into the challenges of literary production. Both authors discovered that underneath, behind, or within the intuitively comprehensible narrative layers there exists a nonsensical dimension, constantly threatening to dissolve any attempt at producing intelligible meaning. Ebileeni argues that in Conrad's and Faulkner's major novels, the quest for meaning in confronting the prospects of nonsense becomes a necessary symptom of human experience to both avoid and engage the entropy of modern life.

The Gospel according to Luke by James R. Edwards Book Resume:

In keeping with the Pillar New Testament Commentary’s distinctive character, this volume by James R. Edwards on Luke gives special attention to the Third Gospel’s vocabulary and historical setting, its narrative purpose and unique themes, and its theological significance for the church and believers today. Though Luke is often thought to have a primarily Gentile focus, Edwards counterbalances that perspective by citing numerous evidences of Luke’s overarching interest in depicting Jesus as the fulfillment of God’s providential work in the history of Israel, and he even considers the possibility that Luke himself was a Jew. In several excursuses Edwards discusses particular topics, including Luke’s infancy narratives, the mission of Jesus as the way of salvation, and Luke’s depiction of the universal scope of the gospel. While fully conversant with all the latest scholarship, Edwards writes in a lively, fluent style that will commend this commentary to ministers, students, scholars, and many other serious Bible readers.

Resurrection in Mark's Literary-Historical Perspective

Resurrection in Mark's Literary-Historical Perspective [Pdf/ePub] eBook ISBN-10: 0567533182

Resurrection in Mark's Literary-Historical Perspective by Paul Fullmer Book Resume:

Through a careful reading of several ancient texts such as Chariton's Callirhoë, Fullmer identifies an ancient storytelling convention with roots in the Homeric tradition in which narratives of death and revival accentuate significant points in a story. In Mark's Gospel, resurrection narratives accentuate the power of Jesus' ministry (Mark 5:21-43) as well as the ironic disloyalty of Jesus' disciples as their failure is first assured (Mark 9:14-29) and later realized (Mark 16:1-18). The reader of this study will come to appreciate how the irony of the Gospel - a literary feature that is prominent in novelistic literature - is furthered by a novelistic application of the resurrection theme. These observations affirm an identification of the genre of the Gospel as novelistic literature. The study also examines themes of death and revival in texts of the Hebrew Bible, revealing a recurrent constellation of motifs. In these texts, Fullmer convincingly traces a Prophetic resurrection topos with characteristics that are compared to an Epic resurrection topos identified in the Homeric tradition. He then demonstrates how the two topoi merge in later, novelistic texts of Hellenistic Judaism such as the Gospel of Mark, witnessing to a widespread amalgamation of cultures that characterizes the Hellenistic period. This study supports a growing appreciation of the ethnic hybridity of the context that produced Mark's Gospel, contributing to the work of scholars who question an often overdrawn dichotomy between Jewish and Greek culture in the Hellenistic period. Moreover, the significant influence of epic, non-biblical traditions upon the Gospel becomes manifest without an assertion of direct dependence upon Homeric epic. Overall, the study provides a model for the examination of specific themes of the Gospel in light of related ancient literature which enhances modern understanding and appreciation of Mark's story.

From Creation to Re-Creation by Daniel Lazich Book Resume:

Within the last forty years, scientific discoveries and knowledge about our universe contain unprecedented theological implications. They imply that the creator exists, more so than ever before. These discoveries have developed a worldview that challenges both theologians and scientists to engage in a mutually fruitful dialogue. From Creation to Re-Creation uniquely presents God’s accomplishments as author Daniel Lazich transports himself to a time when authors wrote creation narratives to depict the contrast between the ancient epics and biblical narrative. It forcefully asserts that the creation of this world and humankind was accomplished by the Creator, who loves humanity selflessly. This assertion is backed by the most advanced study and research concerning our universe’s nature. Lazich writes that the final observer in quantum cosmology and God in the Bible are the same. From Creation to Re-Creation employs unprecedented theological implications to assert that the creator’s existence is necessary for the universe and humankind in it to exist.
