Hard Times by Charles Dickens Book Resume:

Mr. Gradgrind, views himself as the most practical man in Coketown. He has raised his children, Tom and Louisa, to be no-nonsense, unimaginative, and unsentimental. His friend—obnoxious, wealthy Josiah Bounderby—employs Tom as a clerk at his bank, and marries Louisa, thirty years his junior. But soon emotionally-repressed Louisa is nearly seduced into committing adultery, and unscrupulous Tom is suspected of robbing Bounderby's bank. Will Louisa be able to make her father see the shortcomings of his personal philosophy before it's too late? Or will Mr. Gradgrind be forced to reap what he sowed? Written by English author Charles Dickens, this satire of Victorian economic principles and social inequity was first published as a serial in Household Words over twenty weeks in 1854. This unabridged version is taken from the 1905 copyright edition.

Charles Dickens and the Street Children of London

Charles Dickens Ultimate Collection All 20 Novels With Illustrations 200 Short Stories Children's Books Plays Poems Articles Autobiographical Writings Biographies Illustrated [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Charles Dickens and the Street Children of London by Andrea Warren Book Resume:

“Explores how Charles Dickens used his stories to effect social change for London’s most destitute children . . . A lively biography” (Kirkus Reviews). Charles Dickens is best known for his contributions to the world of literature, as the author of classics from Great Expectations to A Christmas Carol. But during his young life, Dickens witnessed terrible things that stayed with him: families starving in doorways, babies being “dropped” on streets by mothers too poor to care for them, and a stunning lack of compassion from the upper class. After his family went into debt and he found himself working at a shoe-polish factory, Dickens soon realized that members of the lower class were no different than he, and, even worse, they were given no chance to better themselves. It was then that he decided to use his greatest talent, his writing ability, to tell the stories of those who had no voice. In this book, award-winning author Andrea Warren takes readers on a journey into the workhouses, slums, factories, and schools of Victorian England, and into the world of a beloved writer who used his pen to do battle on behalf of the poor, becoming one of the greatest reformers of his or any age. “Warren writes in a clear, direct, vivid manner that brings it all to life.” —Booklist (starred review)

A Christmas Carol and Other Christmas Writings by Charles Dickens Book Resume:

After reading Christmas Carol, the notoriously reculsive Thomas Carlyle was "seized with a perfect convulsion of hospitality" and threw not one but two Christmas dinner parties. The impact of the story may not always have been so dramatic but, along with Dickens other Christmas writings, it has had a lasting and significant influence upon our ideas about the Christmas spirit, and about the season as a time for celebration, charity, and memory.

The Story of My Life

Charles Dickens Ultimate Collection All 20 Novels With Illustrations 200 Short Stories Children's Books Plays Poems Articles Autobiographical Writings Biographies Illustrated [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Story of My Life by Helen Keller Book Resume:

“...every one who wishes to gain true knowledge must climb the Hill Difficulty alone, and since there is no royal road to the summit, I must zigzag it in my own way. I slip back many times, I fall, I stand still, I run against the edge of hidden obstacles, I lose my temper and find it again and keep it better, I trudge on, I gain a little, I feel encouraged, I get more eager and climb higher and begin to see the widening horizon. Every struggle is a victory. One more effort and I reach the luminous cloud, the blue depths of the sky, the uplands of my desire.” HELEN KELLER was born on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. At nineteen months old an acute illness nearly took her life and left her deaf and blind. At the recommendation of Alexander Graham Bell, her parents contacted the Perkins Institute for the Blind in Boston, and Anne Sullivan was sent to tutor Helen. The story of their early years together, and of Helen’s remarkable psychological and intellectual growth, is told in The Story of My Life, which first appeared in installments in Ladies’ Home Journal in 1902. With Anne Sullivan, “Teacher,” at her side, Helen Keller graduated from Radcliffe College in 1904, an extraordinary accomplishment for any woman of her time. Helen was dedicated to helping the blind and handicapped, raising funds for the American Foundation for the Blind and lobbying for commissions for the blind in thirty states. A women’s rights activist, a Swedenborgian, a socialist, and a world-famous celebrity, Helen Keller received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and many honorary degrees. Her other books include The World I Live In (1908), Midstream: My Later Life (1929), Helen Keller’s Journal (1938), and Let Us Have Faith (1940). She died in 1968. Her burial urn is in the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

Idiosyncratic

Idiosyncratic by Britt Nunes Book Resume:

Sample chapters of The Non-Space Odyssey Universe revamped! Inspired by 1940s pulp magazines, experience Les'ette's world with an artistic noir pizzazz. Astronaut attacks. Child kingpins. Human propaganda. Les'ette has fought all of these for years during her time on the Orphan Train, but what made her sentence especially brutal was her muted mind: Les'ette can't receive anyone's brainwaves and, more dangerously, no one can receive hers. She is marked as an untrustworthy "defect" in her society. All Les'ette wants is for the little pest Hattie to abandon the idea of becoming her sister, the palm-greaser No'll to stop confessing his feelings for her, and, most of all, to reach emancipation age and be free of her nightmare before someone purchases her at auction. When the mad scientist, Dr. Upton, takes an interest in Les'ette, the threat of being his next lab rat becomes a disturbing possibility, and as she straddles the fragile line of Dr. Upton's sanity, surviving the day is all she begins to want. With Dr. Upton employed by the global government, Les'ette becomes unwillingly entangled in the chaos stirring inside The Federation.

Read till it shatters

Charles Dickens Ultimate Collection All 20 Novels With Illustrations 200 Short Stories Children's Books Plays Poems Articles Autobiographical Writings Biographies Illustrated [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Read till it shatters by Thak Chaloemtiarana Book Resume:

This book introduces readers to modern Thai literature through the themes of modernity, nationalism, identity and gender. In the cultural, political and social transformations that occurred in Thailand during the first half of the twentieth century, Thai literature was one of the vehicles that moved the changes. Taking seriously ‘read till it shatters’, a Thai phrase that instructs readers to take apart the text, to break it down, to deconstruct it, Thak Chaloemtiarana challenges the Thai literary canon from the margins and suggests ways of expanding and enriching it. Thai literature is scarce in translation and requires the skills of a scholar fluent in Thai to comprehend it. Thak is a political scientist turned literary scholar who is bilingual in Thai and English and an avid reader of Thai fiction by authors up and down the social scale. Here he offers lively insights into his favourite literary genres with fresh readings of early Thai novels, Sino-Thai biographies and memoirs of the rich and famous. ‘Thak Chaloemtiarana is an inquisitive man. Late in his career he switched from politics to literature. In these chapters, he draws on a lifetime of reading about writers and writing in Thailand over the past century. He nods towards the usual big names—King Vajiravudh, Luang Wichit, Kulap Saipradit, Kukrit Pramoj—but spends more time on those found in the lesser visited stacks of the libraries, the secondhand bookstalls, and the shelf by the supermarket checkout. His themes are familiar—Thailand and the West, Thai nationalism, the Thai-Chinese, and women under patriarchy—but the angles of vision are original. With a cast ranging from motor-racing princes through sexy Egyptian mummies and a feminist serial murderer to starlets touting breast-enhancement techniques, this book educates, enlightens, and entertains.’
