Black Hills Gold Rush Towns by , Book Resume:

Rising out of the prairie, the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming had long been rumored to have promising quantities of gold. Sacred to the Lakota, the Black Hills was part of the land reserved for them in the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868. However, the tide of prospectors seeking their fortune in the Black Hills was difficult to stem. Members of the 1874 Custer expedition, lead by Gen. George Armstrong Custer, found gold. In 1875, scientists Henry Newton and Walter Jenney conducted an expedition and confirmed the rumors. By 1876, the trickle of prospectors and settlers coming to the Black Hills was a flood. The US government realized that keeping the interlopers out was impossible, and in 1877 the Black Hills was officially opened to settlement. In this sequel to their Black Hills Gold Rush Towns book, the authors expand their coverage of Black Hills towns during the gold-rush era.

Black Hills Gold by Will DuRey Book Resume:

Since the signing of the Laramie Treaty six years earlier, the tribes of the Plains have practised their nomadic lifestyle within the boundaries of the lands set aside for their use. The dwindling herds of buffalo and deer which provide the staple requirements of their existence are a growing source of discontent but while the Americans, the wasicun, stay out of the tribal lands the tenuous peace is maintained. One word, however, uttered at a riverside meeting with 'Yellowstone' Kelly, raises Wes Gray's concern that that peace might soon be broken, that white men might breech the borders of the Great Sioux Reservation and bring with them the turmoil of war. The object of their trespass, to gain that for which men will risk all. Gold.

Ho! for the Black Hills by Jack Crawford,Paul L. Hedren Book Resume:

In 1875, a young man from Pennsylvania known as Captain Jack joined the Dodge Expedition into the Black Hills of Dakota Territory, penning letters to the Omaha Daily Bee during that time and for six months in 1876. John Wallace Crawford, aka Captain Jack, wrote a vibrant account of this fascinating time in the American West. His correspondence featured unusual and intriguing details about the relative merits of the gulches, the vagaries and difficulties of travel in the region, the art of survival in what was essentially wilderness, the hardships of inclement weather, trouble with outlaws, and interactions with American Indians. Award-winning historian Paul L. Hedren has compiled these almost unknown letters, writing an introduction and essays, which result in a treasure trove of hitherto hidden primary documents as well as a ripping yarn in the traditions of the old West. The Lakotas and the Black Hills by Jeffrey Ostler Book Resume:

The story of the Lakota Sioux's loss of their spiritual homelands and their remarkable legal battle to regain it The Lakota Indians counted among their number some of the most famous Native Americans, including Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. Their homeland was in the magnificent Black Hills in South Dakota, where they found plentiful game and held religious ceremonies at charged locations like Devil's Tower. Bullied by settlers and the U. S. Army, they refused to relinquish the land without a fight, most famously bringing down Custer at Little Bighorn. In 1873, though, on the brink of starvation, the Lakotas surrendered the Hills. But the story does not end there. Over the next hundred years, the Lakotas waged a remarkable campaign to recover the Black Hills, this time using the weapons of the law. In The Lakotas and the Black Hills, the latest addition to the Penguin Library of American Indian History, Jeffrey Ostler moves with ease from battlefields to reservations to the Supreme Court, capturing the enduring spiritual strength that bore the Lakotas through the worst times and kept alive the dream of reclaiming their cherished homeland.

Black Hills National Forest by Jan Cerney,Roberta Sago Book Resume:

Once vital to fire prevention and detection, most of the Black Hills National Forest historic lookout towers now serve primarily as hiking destinations. The first crude lookout structures were built at Custer Peak and Harney Peak in 1911. Since that time, more than 20 towers have been constructed in the area. The first lookout towers were built of wood, most replaced by steel or stone. The Civilian Conservation Corps was instrumental in constructing fire towers during the 1930s and 1940s. One of the most famous and architecturally and aesthetically valued towers is the Harney Peak Fire Lookout—situated on the highest point east of the Rocky Mountains. Harney Peak is among a number of Black Hills towers listed on the National Historic Lookout Register. Over 200 vintage images tell the story of not only the historic fire towers but those who manned them. Perched atop high peaks in remote locations, fire lookout personnel spent countless hours scanning the forest, pinpointing dangers, often experiencing the powerful wrath of lightning strong enough to jolt them off their lightning stools.

Seth Bullock by David A. Wolff Book Resume:

Much of Seth Bullock's modern renown comes from television, motion pictures, and his friendship with President Theodore Roosevelt. But Bullock was much more than the frontier law enforcer portrayed in fictional accounts. In Seth Bullock: Black Hills Lawman, David Wolff examines the life work of Bullock as he helped build Deadwood, found the town of Belle Fourche, and promote the Black Hills. Wolff explores the many ventures that Bullock delved into once he moved from Montana to the Black Hills at the start of the gold rush in 1876. He points out that Bullock quickly became an integral part of the burgeoning community, attempting to create a lasting legacy for himself by working within local and regional politics, through his various businesses, and in his many positions at the forefront of Black Hills law enforcement and forest management. Bullock's life epitomized that of many entrepreneurs and pioneers across the nation, and Wolff describes the struggles and successes that this thinker and dreamer experienced in his forty-three years in the Black Hills. Seth Bullock: Black Hills Lawman is the third book in the South Dakota Biography Series, which highlights some of the state's most famous residents.

From Crockett to Custer by Mike Martin Book Resume:

Two legendary battles which sprang from the depths of history to shine as symbols of self sacrifice, heroism and glorious defeat. Encounters which took the lives of two of America's most famous figures: Davy Crockett and General Custer. What is the essential link between the battles of the Alamo and the Little Bighorn? Why did Crockett choose to leave a safe political career to throw in his lot with suicidal adventurers? What drove Custer to ignore common sense and ride to certain death? How could it be that the defenders of the Alamo were made up largely of lawyers and doctors? Or that the troopers of the 7th Cavalry numbered a majority of Irishmen and Germans? Did you know that Crockett kept his besieged comrades entertained with fiddle tunes or that Custer's devoted wife may have had a romantic fling with one of her husband's officers? These are just a few of the many questions answered by this new book which explores connections between these events. For the first time, the battles are linked, exploring reasons, causes, outcomes and personalities. Basing his viewpoint on years of research and travelling across the relevant areas of the USA, the author gives a detailed account which is accessible to anyone coming to the subject for the first time. Illustrated with the author's own photographs, maps and sketches, "From Crockett to Custer" takes the reader on an informative journey through the battlefields as they were and as they are today. An ideal introduction to the battles of the Alamo and Little Bighorn which will give a true understanding of what happened and the legacy which remains.
