Ancient Tahitian Society by Book Resume:

“Tahiti is far famed yet too little known.” Thus wrote J. M. Orsmond in 1848, and the same assertion can be made in 1972. Thousands of pages had been published about Tahiti and its neighboring islands when Orsmond uttered his judgment, and tens of thousands have been published since that time, but a unified, comprehensive, and detailed description of the pre-European ways of life of the inhabitants of those Islands is yet to appear in print. The present work, lengthy as it is, makes no such claim to comprehensiveness; rather, it is concerned mainly with the social relations of those inhabitants, and it serves up only enough about their technology, their religion, their aesthetic expressions, and so forth to place descriptions of their social relations in context and render them more comprehensible. Volumes 1 and 2 of this work are a reconstruction of the Islanders’ way of life as it was believed to have been just before it began to be transformed by European influence—a period labeled the Late Indigenous Era. Volume 3 covers events in Tahiti and Mo‘orea from about 1767 to 1815—a period labeled the Early European Era.

Music and Performance Culture in Nineteenth-Century Britain by Bennett Zon Book Resume:

Music and Performance Culture in Nineteenth-Century Britain: Essays in Honour of Nicholas Temperley is the first book to focus upon aspects of performance in the broader context of nineteenth-century British musical culture. In four Parts, 'Musical Cultures', 'Societies', 'National Music' and 'Methods', this volume assesses the role music performance plays in articulating significant trends and currents of the cultural life of the period and includes articles on performance and individual instruments; orchestral and choral ensembles; church and synagogue music; music societies; cantatas; vocal albums; the middle-class salon, conducting; church music; and piano pedagogy. An introduction explores Temperley's vast contribution to musicology, highlighting his seminal importance in creating the field of nineteenth-century British music studies, and a bibliography provides an up-to-date list of his publications, including books and monographs, book chapters, journal articles, editions, reviews, critical editions, arrangements and compositions. Fittingly devoted to a significant element in Temperley's research, this book provides scholars of all nineteenth-century musical topics the opportunity to explore the richness of Britain's musical history.

A Library of the World's Best Literature - Ancient and Modern - Vol.XX (Forty-Five Volumes); Ibsen-Jefferies by Charles Dudley Warner Book Resume:

Popular American essayist, novelist, and journalist CHARLES DUDLEY WARNER (1829-1900) was renowned for the warmth and intimacy of his writing, which encompassed travelogue, biography and autobiography, fiction, and more, and influenced entire generations of his fellow writers. Here, the prolific writer turned editor for his final grand work, a splendid survey of global literature, classic and modern, and it's not too much to suggest that if his friend and colleague Mark Twain-who stole Warner's quip about how "everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it"-had assembled this set, it would still be hailed today as one of the great achievements of the book world. Highlights from Volume 20 include: . excerpts from Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House . a survey of Icelandic literarture . hymns from the Rig-Veda . selections from the Upanishads . the writings of Washington Irving . selections from Henry James . Japanese literature, medieval and modern literature . and much, much more.

Teachings of the Santería Gods by Ócha'ni Lele Book Resume:

The first book to explore the sacred myths of Santería • Includes more than 100 myths, stories, and histories about the odu and the orishas • Reassembles the oral fragments from the African diaspora into coherent stories • Demonstrates that the African peoples, specifically the Yoruba, were deeply spiritual At the core of the diloggún--the sacred divination system of Santería--are the sacred stories known as the patakís, narratives whose themes are as powerful and relevant today as they were in the minds of the ancient Yoruba who safeguarded them. Each patakí is connected to one or more of the 16 odu, the principal creative forces of Santería. Some recount the lives of orishas on earth, others the lives of individuals in heaven, and some tell of the odu themselves, for even they once walked the earth as mortals. The first book to explore these ancient African stories in English, Teachings of the Santería Gods recounts more than 100 of these sacred parables, including many stories reassembled from the oral tradition of the African diaspora. Ranging from creation myths to what happens when a love potion works far too well, these stories share the wisdom and spirituality of the Yoruba people of ancient Africa and form the living, oral bible of one of the world’s fastest-growing faiths.

Thucydides on the Outbreak of War by S. N. Jaffe Book Resume:

The cause of great power war is a perennial issue for the student of politics. Some 2,400 years ago, in his monumental History of the Peloponnesian War, Thucydides wrote that it was the growth of Athenian power and the fear that this power inspired in Sparta which rendered the Peloponnesian War somehow necessary, inevitable, or compulsory. In this new political psychological study of Thucydides' first book, S.N. Jaffe shows how the History's account of the outbreak of the war ultimately points toward the opposing characters of the Athenian and Spartan regimes, disclosing a Thucydidean preoccupation with the interplay between nature and convention. Jaffe explores how the character of the contest between Athens and Sparta, or how the outbreak of a particular war, can reveal Thucydides' account of the recurring human causes of war and peace. The political thought of Thucydides proves bound up with his distinctive understanding of the interrelationship of particular events and more universal themes.

The tale tells that in times long past there was a dwelling of men beside a great wood. Before it lay a plain, not very great, but which was, as it were, an isle in the sea of woodland, since even when you stood on the flat ground, you could see trees everywhere in the offing, though as for hills, you could scarce say that there were any; only swellings-up of the earth here and there, like the upheavings of the water that one sees at whiles going on amidst the eddies of a swift but deep stream. The tale of the House of the Wolfings in its struggles against the legionaries of Rome then advancing into Northern Germany.

Introduction to Wolfhart Pannenberg's Systematic Theology by Gunther Wenz Book Resume:

As one of the great thinkers of our time, Wolfhart Pannenberg has influenced the history of Christian theology and philosophy of religion since the second half of the 20th century. His Systematic Theology and many of his other works have become classics in the theological science. In this introduction Gunther Wenz examines the main pillars of Pannenberg’s theology: the self-manifestation of God, the Trinitarian God, the creation of the world, Christology, anthropology, pneumatology, eschatology and ecclesiology. The book thereby offers a valuable guide to comprehending Pannenberg’s Systematic Theology in the context of his most relevant writings.

The Eumenidies by Aeschelus Book Resume:

In The Eumenides, the final part of The Oresteian trilogy, Orestes must face the consequences of his revenge plot. After killing Clytemnestra he flees from Agos and seeks refuge in Delphi inside a temple of Apollo. However, Furies, deities of justice, follow him in an attempt to punish Orestes for his misdeed. While he is in the temple, the God Apollo protects him and subdues the Furies with a sleep spell lasting long enough for Orestes to escape them again. Orestes seeks further help from the gods, begging for their interference. Under the protection of Hermes, Orestes travels to Athens. He is haunted by his mother’s ghost, who encourages the Furies to continue to hunt her son and torment him as punishment for her death. When the Furies find Orestes in Athens, he prays to Goddess Athena to help him. As the Goddess of Justice, Athena appears and holds a trial for Orestes which she presides over. An epic murder trial unfolds with Orestes as the defendent and the Furies advocating for late Clytemnestra. Apollo comes to his aid once more and testifies before a jury of Athenians making a plea for why Orestes was right to avenge King Agamemnon. If the jury finds Orestes guilty he will be tormented for an eternity by the Furies, but if they acquit him, Orestes can return home to Agos as the rightful heir to the throne. The Eumenides is the final part of the highly esteemed Grecian trilogy, The Oresteia. Written by the father of tragedy, Aeschlyus, The Eumenides is an entertaining and enthralling work of literature as well as a vital piece of history, as it is one of the few works that were recovered from Aeschylus. With heart-pounding drama and emotion-driven prose, The Eumenides promotes a message of mercy over wrath and depicts complex characterizations of popular Greek gods, satisfying even modern readers. This edition of The Eumenides by the legendary Greek playwright Aeschylus features an eye-catching cover design and is printed in a modern font to cater to contemporary audiences.

The Georgics By Virgil by Virgil Book Resume:

A eulogy to Italy as the temperate land of perpetual spring, and a celebration of the values of rustic piety, The Georgics is probably the supreme achievement of Latin poetry. The Georgics is a poem by Latin poet Virgil, likely published in 29 BCE. As the name suggests the subject of the poem is agriculture; but far from being an example of peaceful rural poetry, it is a work characterized by tensions in both theme and purpose. John Dryden called Virgil's Georgics, written between 37 and 30 B.C.E., "the best poem by the best poet." The poem, newly translated by the poet and translator David Ferry, is one of the great songs, maybe the greatest we have, of human accomplishment in difficult--and beautiful--circumstances, and in the context of all we share in nature. The Georgics celebrates the crops, trees, and animals, and, above all, the human beings who care for them. It takes the form of teaching about this care: the tilling of fields, the tending of vines, the raising of the cattle and the bees. There's joy in the detail of Virgil's descriptions of work well done, and ecstatic joy in his praise of the very life of things, and passionate commiseration too, because of the vulnerability of men and all other creatures, with all they have to contend with: storms, and plagues, and wars, and all mischance. As Rosanna Warren noted about Ferry's work in The Threepenny Review, "We finally have an English Horace whose rhythmical subtlety and variety do justice to the Latin poet's own inventiveness, in which emotion rises from the motion of the verse . . . To sense the achievement, one has to read the collection as a whole . . . and they can take one's breath away even as they continue breathing." This ebook edition includes only the English language translation of the Georgics.

The Aeneid by Virgi Book Resume:

The Aeneid is an epic poem, written by Virgil between 29 and 19 BC, that tells the legendary story of Aeneas, a Trojan who travelled to Italy, where he became the ancestor of the Romans. It comprises 9,896 lines in dactylic hexameter. The first six of the poem's twelve books tell the story of Aeneas's wanderings from Troy to Italy, and the poem's second half tells of the Trojans' ultimately victorious war upon the Latins, under whose name Aeneas and his Trojan followers are destined to be subsumed. The hero Aeneas was already known to Greco-Roman legend and myth, having been a character in the Iliad. Virgil took the disconnected tales of Aeneas's wanderings, his vague association with the foundation of Rome and a personage of no fixed characteristics other than a scrupulous pietas, and fashioned this into a compelling founding myth or national epic that at once tied Rome to the legends of Troy, explained the Punic Wars, glorified traditional Roman virtues, and legitimized the Julio-Claudian dynasty as descendants of the founders, heroes, and gods of Rome and Troy. The Aeneid is widely regarded as Virgil's masterpiece and one of the greatest works of Latin literature.

Delphi Complete Harvard Classics and Shelf of Fiction (Illustrated) by Charles W. Eliot Book Resume:

Regarded by many as the most comprehensive anthology of all time, ‘The Harvard Classics’ was first published in 1909 under the supervision of the Harvard president Charles W. Eliot. An esteemed academic, Eliot had argued that the elements of a liberal education could be gained by spending 15 minutes a day reading from a collection of books that could fit on a five-foot shelf. The publisher P. F. Collier challenged Eliot to make good on this statement and ‘Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf’ was the result. Eight years later Eliot added a further 20 volumes as a sub-collection titled ‘The Harvard Classics Shelf of Fiction’, offering some of the greatest novels and short stories of world literature. The exhaustive anthology of the ‘The Harvard Classics’ comprises every major literary figure, philosopher, religion, folklore and historical subject up to the twentieth century. This comprehensive eBook presents the complete anthology, with Eliot’s original introductions, numerous illustrations, rare texts and the usual Delphi bonus material. The Boys' Book of Rulers by Lydia Hoyt Farmer Book Resume:

FOR nine years the Greeks had besieged the city of Troy. This famous Trojan War, which is said to have occurred about 1184 B.C., has been embellished by romance and poetry; and although the real events have been much distorted by fabulous tales, it holds an important place in ancient Grecian history. The marvellous Greek poet Homer has immortalized the wonderful story of this contest, in which, according to the old Grecian belief, gods and heroes fought for mastery; and it seems more fitting to the subject that we should view these events through the eyes of those ancient Greeks, whose weird yet fascinating fables peopled the mountains and seas with gods and goddesses; over whom proud Zeus or Jupiter ruled on the dread Mount of Olympus, from whence he hurled his awful thunderbolts, and shook the earth and heavens in his wrathful moods, when gods or mortals had dared to defy his imperial will. Agamemnon, king of Mycen¾, was the commander of all the Grecian hosts which for these nine years had surrounded the walls of Troy. The cause of the quarrel may be thus briefly stated:Ñ Priam was the richest and most powerful of all the kings of Troy. His wife, Queen Hecuba, had dreamed that one of her children should become a firebrand which should consume the whole city. Whereupon, Priam was so alarmed, that he ordered that her next child should be exposed in a desert place among the mountains, and left to perish. Paris was this child, and when an infant, was hidden by his mother, that he might not be thus destroyed. Paris grew to be a youth of marvellous beauty, and was at length brought by his mother to the court of Priam. The king was so charmed by his beauty and accomplishments, that Paris ventured to make himself known, and was received by Priam, his father, with great kindness; for he was so pleased with the noble youth, that he ceased to remember the evil dream. This dream, however, was very strangely fulfilled years afterwards. Paris made an expedition into Greece, which country was at that time divided into many small kingdoms or states, each governed by its own king. Agamemnon was king of Mycen¾, and his brother MenelaŸs was king of Sparta. Agamemnon and MenelaŸs were the sons of Plisthenes; but as their father died when they were very young, their mother A‘rope was afterwards married to Atreus; and these two brothers were brought up by their step-father as his own children, to whom his name was given, as they were called Atrid¾. Atreus was afterwards murdered, and AgamemnonÕs uncle Thyestes ascended the throne of Mycen¾. Agamemnon and his brother MenelaŸs then fled to Sparta. The king of Sparta agreed to recover the kingdom for Agamemnon, if he would marry his daughter Clytemnestra, and make her his queen. To this Agamemnon consented, and with the aid of Tyndarus, king of Sparta, he recovered his own kingdom, and married Clytemnestra. His brother MenelaŸs afterwards became king of Sparta.

The Secrets of Humankind by Divine Design, the Gateway to Mindfulness and Self-awareness (Spiritual warfare series book 2) by Eleazar Ben Michael Book Resume:

Many have been puzzled for centuries at the biological creature that science calls homo sapience (humankind). Most people often question what constitutes man’s true spiritual nature, which is invisible to our sense of sight. There is the quest to know what constitutes the mind, consciousness, the soul, and the essence of our spirit-soul personality. Many still believe that there may be no definitive answers which will provide the necessary satisfaction about this incorporeal essence of the soul and life of humanity. But how come God made humans the most advanced biological rational beings on the earth plane? Our modern sciences have tried to resolve this great mystery, and they have only successfully unveiled the mortal body(the outer self) but yet to understand the inner spiritual nature. The psalmist David wrote many centuries ago, asking the same significant question that has plagued humanity throughout time. As King David reflected upon this unique being (humanity), he asked this central question: What is man [humankind] that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you cared for him? Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honour. (Psalm 8:4-5. ESV) How is he a spiritual being imprisoned in flesh and bones with skin on the outside? How does his soul consciousness work in harmony with his body and mind? You may be asking if we are a soul as an entity or as a material object that we could carry around. How does man’s inner spiritual body help him to relate to the material universe? This book is the second book in the soul trilogy series, and it is a must-read resource on the subject of spirituality, mindfulness, and the nature of the inner human spirit Soul. It hopes to guide readers to discover the mystery of the inner self and its relationship to the spirit world.

This study contends that Christians in Western democracies should champion free expression, not only for their own wellbeing but also for the good of their societies. The book presents a theology of free expression and examines a paradox: why censorship is dangerous, and why it remains present even in vibrant democracies.

The Myths Of The New World by Daniel G. Brinton Book Resume:

What are man’s earliest ideas of a soul and a God, and of his own origin and destiny? Why do we find certain myths, such as of a creation, a flood, an after-world; certain symbols, as the bird, the serpent, the cross; certain numbers, as the three, the four, the seven—intimately associated with these ideas by every race? What are the laws of growth of natural religions? How do they acquire such an influence, and is this influence for good or evil? King James Bible by Oxford University Press Book Resume:

This 400th anniversary edition of the King James Version of the Bible is a reprint of the 1611 text, in an easy-to-read roman font instead of the black-letter type of the original. The original capital letters, many of which are pictorial, have been restored to each chapter in order to replicate the visual appeal of the early editions. The 1611 text is followed page-for-page and line-for-line, and all misprints are reproduced rather than corrected. The large body of preliminary matter, which includes genealogies, maps, and lists of readings, is also included. The text of the 1611 edition differs from modern editions of the King James Version in thousands of details, and this edition is the most authentic version of the original text that has ever been published. The volume concludes with an essay by Gordon Campbell on the first edition of the King James Bible.

Lifelode by Jo Walton Book Resume:

Lifelode is the Mythopoeic Award Winning novel from Hugo, Nebula and World Fantasy Award winning author Jo Walton. It was published in hardcover in 2009 by NESFA Press and is now available for the first time as an ebook. At its heart, Lifelode is the story of a comfortable manor house family. The four adults of the household are happily polygamous, each fulfilling their ‘lifelode’ or life’s purpose: Ferrand is the lord of the manor, his sweetmate Taveth runs the household, his wife Chayra makes ceramics, and Taveth’s husband Ranal works the farm. Their children are a joyful bunch, running around in the sunshine days of the harvest and wondering what their own lifelodes will be. Their lives changed with the arrival of two visitors to Applekirk: Jankin the scholar and Hanethe, Ferrand’s great grandmother and the former lord of the manor, who has been living for many generations in the East, a place where the gods walk and yeya (magic) is so powerful that those who wield it are not quite human.

Grimoire of Aleister Crowley by Rodney Orpheus,Aleister Crowley,John Dee Book Resume:

Group ritual has been a cornerstone of spiritual practice since time immemorial, yet its history and importance have often been overlooked by occultists of the modern age. This book is the first comprehensive presentation of group-oriented rites for modern magicians inspired by the works of Aleister Crowley. It contains rituals written by Crowley for his own magic circles, many of them unpublished during his lifetime, plus rare ancient texts that were Crowley's own inspiration. The rituals are newly edited and explained by Rodney Orpheus, who brings to this volume decades of experience in performing and teaching Aleister Crowley's rituals within Crowley's magical order Ordo Templi Orientis. He introduces each ritual with a clear overview, setting each in its historical context and explaining its function and mode of operation, and includes detailed notes on the setting and performance of each one. Whether absolute beginner or seasoned expert, magicians of all paths will find this volume to be an eminently workable and extremely powerful grimoire spanning centuries from ancient Mithraic and Bacchanalian rites, Goetia, and Gnosticism, right up to present day Crowleyan invocations and sexual magick.
