Beyond Diagnosis by Book Resume:

“He who dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the sgadow of the Almighty” Psalm 91:KJV No one can fully capture nor describe what patients go through, especially when they suffer long-term illnesses. At some point, though, we have to change the narrative of care beyond diagnosis and treatment. Since there is no definitive method for caring for loved ones during these times, our love has to be the biggest potential to transform their lives. This book is my personal attempt to go beyond the diagnosis and share MY journey as a caregiver. This is all in an effort to change the perspective of caregiving. I also wanted the views of loved ones who suffered from these debilitating illnesses to be included in this narrative to ensure that you understand that beyond the diagnosis are human beings capable of and in need of being loved and treated with the dignity and respect that every human being deserves. EVERYONE has a story to tell, and NO ONE can tell your story like you can. – Dr. Gillian

She found herself struggling for years, with diagnosis after diagnosis landing on her shoulders. Told repeatedly by doctors that she was dangerous, Alexis tried to become the person the system wanted her to be: someone normal. But it seemed that normal was always just out of reach. Madness in Experience and History

Madness in Experience and History [Pdf/ePub] eBook ISBN-10: 1000469530
Author: Hannah Lyn Venable
Publisher: Routledge
File Size: 1530 KB
File Format: Pdf
Read Count: 3065489

Madness in Experience and History by Hannah Lyn Venable Book Resume:

Madness in Experience and History brings together experience and history to show their impact on madness or mental illness. Drawing on the writings of two twentieth-century French philosophers, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Michel Foucault, the author pairs a phenomenological approach with an archaeological approach to present a new perspective on mental illness as an experience that arises out of common behavioral patterns and shared historical structures. Many today feel frustrated with the medical model because of its deficiencies in explaining mental illness. In response, the author argues that we must integrate human experiences of mental disorders with the history of mental disorders to have a full account of mental health and to make possible a more holistic care. Scholars in the humanities and mental health practitioners will appreciate how such an analysis not only offers a greater understanding of mental health, but also a fresh take on discovering value in diverse human experiences.

Beyond Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome by Institute of Medicine,Board on the Health of Select Populations,Committee on the Diagnostic Criteria for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Book Resume:

Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) are serious, debilitating conditions that affect millions of people in the United States and around the world. ME/CFS can cause significant impairment and disability. Despite substantial efforts by researchers to better understand ME/CFS, there is no known cause or effective treatment. Diagnosing the disease remains a challenge, and patients often struggle with their illness for years before an identification is made. Some health care providers have been skeptical about the serious physiological - rather than psychological - nature of the illness. Once diagnosed, patients often complain of receiving hostility from their health care provider as well as being subjected to treatment strategies that exacerbate their symptoms. Beyond Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome proposes new diagnostic clinical criteria for ME/CFS and a new term for the illness - systemic exertion intolerance disease(SEID). According to this report, the term myalgic encephalomyelitis does not accurately describe this illness, and the term chronic fatigue syndrome can result in trivialization and stigmatization for patients afflicted with this illness. Beyond Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome stresses that SEID is a medical - not a psychiatric or psychological - illness. This report lists the major symptoms of SEID and recommends a diagnostic process. One of the report's most important conclusions is that a thorough history, physical examination, and targeted work-up are necessary and often sufficient for diagnosis. The new criteria will allow a large percentage of undiagnosed patients to receive an accurate diagnosis and appropriate care. Beyond Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome will be a valuable resource to promote the prompt diagnosis of patients with this complex, multisystem, and often devastating disorder; enhance public understanding; and provide a firm foundation for future improvements in diagnosis and treatment.

Diagnosis as Cultural Practice by Judith Felson Duchan,Dana Kovarsky Book Resume:

This book is about the doing and experiencing of diagnosis in everyday life. Diagnoses are revealed as interactive negotiations rather than as the assigning of diagnostic labels. The authors demonstrate, through detailed discourse analyses, how the diagnostic process depends on power and accountability as expressed through the talk of those engaged in the diagnostic process. The authors also show that diagnostic decisions are not only made by professional experts trained in the art and science of diagnosis, but they can also be made by anyone trying to figure out the nature of everyday problems. Finally, diagnostic reasoning is found to extend beyond typical diagnostic situations, occurring in unexpected places such as written letters of recommendation and talk about the nature of communication. Together, the chapters in this book demonstrate how diagnosis is a communication practice deeply rooted in our culture. The book is interdisciplinary and unusually broad in its focus. The authors come from different experiential scholarly backgrounds. Each of them takes a different look at the impact and nature of the diagnostic process. The diagnoses discussed include autism, Alzheimer’s disease, speech and language disorders, and menopause. The focus is not only on the here and now of the diagnostic interaction, but also on how diagnoses and diagnostic processes change over time. The book can serve as an undergraduate or graduate text for courses offered in various disciplines, including communication, sociology, anthropology, communication disorders, audiology, linguistics, medicine, and disability studies.

The Conflict Resolution Toolbox by Gary T. Furlong Book Resume:

PRAISE FOR THE CONFLICT RESOLUTION TOOLBOX SECOND EDITION "I have been using and recommending The Conflict Resolution Toolbox since its first edition. It is rare to find a resource with such practical tools in a field that is so concrete, but often struggles to bridge theory and practice. In this increasingly complex world, it is vital to have models to resort to when we reach impasse in conflict. I recommend The Conflict Resolution Toolbox to anyone engaged in resolving conflicts in any discipline." —Martha E. Simmons, JD, LLM, PHD, Academic Director, Winkler Institute of Dispute Resolution and Director, Mediation Clinic and Intensive Program, Toronto, Canada "We all know one thing about conflict: It is messy! Furlong's models offer mediators, facilitators, lawyers, psychotherapists and others 'a leg up' in more swiftly figuring out what is going on and what is needed. Furlong does not offer up a single 'truth', style or theory, so much as a collection of effective tools that professionals, groups and families can use to better understand what they are experiencing and how they can approach achieving better results. Highly recommended!" —James C. Melamed, JD, CEO, "Gary Furlong has done it again! A long-time leader in the conflict resolution field, Gary has added two new 'power tools' to what was already the essential conflict resolution toolkit. His new chapters in this Second Edition deal with 'The Law of Reciprocity' and 'Loss Aversion Bias'. I am proud and thankful to add this book to my already growing conflict resolution bookcase, knowing that this is a volume I will go to again and again. I highly recommend it for anyone in the field." —Rick Weiler, Mediator, Arbitrator, Weiler ADR Inc., Ottawa, Canada "Gary Furlong uniquely provides invaluable, practical tools that help in understanding, preventing, and resolving conflict. This is a must-have reference book for anyone who cares about mitigating the role destructive conflict plays in our professional and personal lives and finding strategic benefit in tools that work. Gary has created a book that is both aspirational and practical. It's so challenging to create simple-to-use tools supported by complex concepts and Gary does this better than anyone." —Joshua A. Gordon, JD, MA, Arbitrator for the Court of Arbitration of Sport, Senior Practitioner at the Sports Conflict Institute, and Woodard Family Foundation Fellow Senior Instructor of Sports Business at the University of Oregon Lundquist College of Business

Treating Trauma-Related Dissociation: A Practical, Integrative Approach (Norton Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology) by Kathy Steele,Suzette Boon,Onno van der Hart Book Resume:

Winner of the 2017 International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD) Pierre Janet Writing Award. Establishing safety and working with dissociative parts in complex trauma therapy. Therapists around the world ask similar questions and struggle with similar challenges treating highly dissociative patients. This book arose not only out of countless hours of treating patients with dissociative disorders, but also out of the crucible of supervision and consultation, where therapists bring their most urgent questions, needs, and vulnerabilities. The book offers an overview of the neuropsychology of dissociation as a disorder of non-realization, as well as chapters on assessment, prognosis, case formulation, treatment planning, and treatment phases and goals, based on best practices. The authors describe what to focus on first in a complex therapy, and how to do it; how to help patients establish both internal and external safety without rescuing; how to work systematically with dissociative parts of a patient in ways that facilitate integration rather than further dissociation; how to set and maintain helpful boundaries; specific ways to stay focused on process instead of content; how to deal compassionately and effectively with disorganized attachment and dependency on the therapist; how to help patients integrate traumatic memories; what to do when the patient is enraged, chronically ashamed, avoidant, or unable to trust the therapist; and how to compassionately understand and work with resistances as a co-creation of both patient and therapist. Relational ways of being with the patient are the backbone of treatment, and are themselves essential therapeutic interventions. As such, the book also focused not only on highly practical and theoretically sound interventions, not only on what to do and say, but places strong emphasis on how to be with patients, describing innovative, compassionately collaborative approaches based on the latest research on attachment and evolutionary psychology. Throughout the book, core concepts—fundamental ideas that are highlighted in the text in bold so they can be seen at a glance—are emphasized. These serve as guiding principles in treatment as well as a summing-up of many of the most important notions in each chapter. Each chapter concludes with a section for further examination. These sections include additional ideas and questions, exercises for practicing skills, and suggestions for peer discussions based on topics in a particular chapter, meant to inspire further curiosity, discovery, and growth.

Testing and Diagnosis of Analog Circuits and Systems by Ruey-wen Liu Book Resume:

IS THE TOPIC ANALOG TESTING AND DIAGNOSIS TIMELY? Yes, indeed it is. Testing and Diagnosis is an important topic and fulfills a vital need for the electronic industry. The testing and diagnosis of digital electronic circuits has been successfuIly developed to the point that it can be automated. Unfortu nately, its development for analog electronic circuits is still in its Stone Age. The engineer's intuition is still the most powerful tool used in the industry! There are two reasons for this. One is that there has been no pressing need from the industry. Analog circuits are usuaIly small in size. Sometimes, the engineer's experience and intuition are sufficient to fulfill the need. The other reason is that there are no breakthrough results from academic re search to provide the industry with critical ideas to develop tools. This is not because of a lack of effort. Both academic and industrial research groups have made major efforts to look into this problem. Unfortunately, the prob lem for analog circuits is fundamentally different from and much more diffi cult than its counterpart for digital circuits. These efforts have led to some important findings, but are still not at the point of being practicaIly useful. However, these situations are now changing. The current trend for the design of VLSI chips is to use analog/digital hybrid circuits, instead of digital circuits from the past. Therefore, even Ix x Preface though the analog circuit may be small, the total circuit under testing is large.

Lean on Me by Kathryn Lynn Davis Book Resume:

The prognosis you give yourself is the only one that's important. You can't allow yourself to become the victim of a negative prognosis. At the young age of thirty-three, Nancy Davis was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The finality of the neurologist's prognosis was devastating: "There is nothing you can do. Go home and go to bed...forever." Nancy left her doctor's office in shock and despair. How could it be that within a year she would be confined to her bed, at best able to push the buttons on her television's remote control? She had plans. She had a family. She had a life that she desperately wanted to live. Nancy made a choice. Rather than accepting this hopeless prognosis, she began to educate herself, to create an effective health regimen, and to expand her range of therapeutic options. She literally reinvented her prognosis and in doing so she created a healthy new life. Lean on Me couples Nancy's deeply personal story with a step-by-step guide to empower anyone to take charge of his or her own health care in the face of any life-threatening disease: Step One Embrace Change Step Two Fear Less Step Three Never Take No for an Answer Step Four Find Your Dr. Right Step Five Build Your Health Team Step Six You Are What You Ingest Step Seven Let's Get Physical Step Eight Explore Alternative Therapies Step Nine Tame the Health Care Monster Step Ten Give Back Life-altering diseases often come with a list of "can'ts," "won'ts," and "no's." Nancy teaches readers how to move beyond these negative concepts and focus on what they personally can and will do to improve their health. Each of these steps offers readers the strategies and strength to carry on when they're feeling overwhelmed, and the concrete tools for actively seeking and receiving the best treatment. Lean on Me is the health advocate that each of us needs to adopt in the face of a medical crisis. It is a book that shows how to navigate the health care waters, to find hope, to take positive action, and to celebrate progress -- all kinds, every day. It provides the knowledge and power to make good choices. It supplies the authoritative information that can enable you to save your life or the life of a loved one.

Advances in Animal Disease Diagnosis by Suresh Kumar Gahlawat,Sushila Maan Book Resume:

Advances in Animal Disease Diagnosis: Infectious animal diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses threaten the health and well-being of wildlife, livestock and human populations, limit productivity and significantly increase economic losses to each sector. Pathogen de-tection is an important step for the diagnosis and successful treatment of animal diseases as well as control management in farm and field conditions. The conventional techniques employed to diagnose pathogens in livestock species are time-consuming and sometimes give inconclusive results. On the contrary, molecular techniques have the potential to diag-nose known pathogens/conditions quickly, reliably, and unequivocally as well as for novel pathogen detection. New advances in diagnostics and vaccine design using genomics have developed powerful new methods that have also set the stage for the enhanced diagnosis, surveillance, and control of infectious diseases. High-throughput sequencing (HTS), for ex-ample, uses the latest DNA sequencing platforms in the detection, identification, and detailed analysis of both pathogen and host genomes. This book will explore some key opportunities in the context of animal health, such as the detection of new microorganisms and the development of improved diagnosis of emerging or re-emerging diseases and other clinical conditions, viz. biosensors, nanotools, and omics technologies. Features • Details comprehensive knowledge on the latest molecular techniques for animal disease diagnosis and management • Examines how DNA-based diagnostic techniques will assist international efforts to control the introduction of exotic diseases into new geographic areas • Describes the latest molecular assays for the rapid and accurate detection of pathogens • Helps in working towards meeting the global challenge for sustainable food production and the eradication of poverty • With new biotechnological developments, this fully updated book is a treasure trove of the latest information in animal and medical science
