They were fearless; men of honor who have been known throughout history by different names: Spartan, Viking, Samurai. Today, men like these still strike from the shadows. They are highly prized intelligence agents, military operatives, and assassins. One man is all three. Two days ago, that man was crossed—badly. Now, far from home and surrounded by his enemy, Scot Harvath must battle his way out. With no support, no cavalry coming, and no one even aware of where he is, it will take everything he has ever learned to survive. But survival isn’t enough. Harvath wants revenge. Understanding the Backlash Against Affirmative Action by John Fobanjong Book Resume:

Affirmative action remains one of the most divisive issues in America, remaining unsolved since the 1960s civil rights legislation. Though many works have attempted to solve the dilemma, none have tried to identify the underlying causes of the backlash against the policy. In order to understand affirmative action's future, one must understand its evolution, its opposition, and its application both in America and in other nations. In a multi-disciplinary approach, this book examines affirmative action from comparative, historical, policy, and sociological perspectives. Also included is a list of Supreme Court rulings on affirmative action.

White Backlash and the Politics of Multiculturalism

White Backlash and the Politics of Multiculturalism by Roger Hewitt Book Resume:

The murder of Stephen Lawrence led to the widest review of institutional racism seen in the UK. Sections of the white working-class communities in south London near to the scene of the murder, however, displayed deep hostility to the equalities and multiculturalist practice of the local state and other agencies. Drawing on extensive ethnographic research, this book relates these phenomena to the 'backlash' to multiculturalism evident during the 1990s in the USA, Australia, Canada, the UK and other European countries. It examines these within the unfolding social and political responses to race equalities in the UK and the USA from the 1960s to the present in the context of changes in social class and national political agendas. This book is unique in linking a detailed study of a community at a time of its critical importance to national debates over racism and multiculturalism, to historically wider international economic and social trends.

Revolutionary Backlash

Backlash Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Revolutionary Backlash by Rosemarie Zagarri Book Resume:

The Seneca Falls Convention is typically seen as the beginning of the first women's rights movement in the United States. Revolutionary Backlash argues otherwise. According to Rosemarie Zagarri, the debate over women's rights began not in the decades prior to 1848 but during the American Revolution itself. Integrating the approaches of women's historians and political historians, this book explores changes in women's status that occurred from the time of the American Revolution until the election of Andrew Jackson. Although the period after the Revolution produced no collective movement for women's rights, women built on precedents established during the Revolution and gained an informal foothold in party politics and male electoral activities. Federalists and Jeffersonians vied for women's allegiance and sought their support in times of national crisis. Women, in turn, attended rallies, organized political activities, and voiced their opinions on the issues of the day. After the publication of Mary Wollstonecraft's A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, a widespread debate about the nature of women's rights ensued. The state of New Jersey attempted a bold experiment: for a brief time, women there voted on the same terms as men. Yet as Rosemarie Zagarri argues in Revolutionary Backlash, this opening for women soon closed. By 1828, women's politicization was seen more as a liability than as a strength, contributing to a divisive political climate that repeatedly brought the country to the brink of civil war. The increasing sophistication of party organizations and triumph of universal suffrage for white males marginalized those who could not vote, especially women. Yet all was not lost. Women had already begun to participate in charitable movements, benevolent societies, and social reform organizations. Through these organizations, women found another way to practice politics.

Backlash against Welfare Mothers

Backlash Pdf [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Backlash against Welfare Mothers by Ellen Reese Book Resume:

Backlash against Welfare Mothers is a forceful examination of how and why a state-level revolt against welfare, begun in the late 1940s, was transformed into a national-level assault that destroyed a critical part of the nation's safety net, with tragic consequences for American society. With a wealth of original research, Ellen Reese puts recent debates about the contemporary welfare backlash into historical perspective. She provides a closer look at these early antiwelfare campaigns, showing why they were more successful in some states than others and how opponents of welfare sometimes targeted Puerto Ricans and Chicanos as well as blacks for cutbacks. Her research reveals both the continuities and changes in American welfare opposition from the late 1940s to the present. Reese brings new evidence to light that reveals how large farmers and racist politicians, concerned about the supply of cheap labor, appealed to white voters' racial resentments and stereotypes about unwed mothers, blacks, and immigrants in the 1950s. She then examines congressional failure to replace the current welfare system with a more popular alternative in the 1960s and 1970s, which paved the way for national assaults on welfare. Taking a fresh look at recent debates on welfare reform, she explores how and why politicians competing for the white vote and right-wing think tanks promoting business interests appeased the Christian right and manufactured consent for cutbacks through a powerful, racially coded discourse. Finally, through firsthand testimonies, Reese vividly portrays the tragic consequences of current welfare policies and calls for a bold new agenda for working families.

Authoritarian Backlash by Professor Thomas Ambrosio Book Resume:

Authoritarian Russia has adopted five strategies to preserve the Kremlin's political power: insulate, bolster, subvert, redefine and coordinate. Thomas Ambrosio examines each of these in turn, all of which seek to counter or undermine regional democratic trends both at home and throughout the former Soviet Union. Policies such as these are of great concern to the growing literature on how autocratic regimes are becoming more active in their resistance to democracy. Through detailed case studies of each strategy, this book makes significant contributions to our understandings of Russian domestic and foreign policies, democratization theory and the policy challenges associated with democracy promotion.

Upland bird hunters will learn how to dispose of the bodies of dead woodcock and the sportsman's program for resolving the Near East Israel - Palestinian crisis has already been forwarded to the State Department (and completely disregarded). It has received appropriate recognition from recognized literary masters. "The BACKLASH tales are classics. They will command a place in outdoor literature for weeks." William Shakespeare "All of these stories have been stolen from THE COMPLEAT ANGLER. You will hear from my attorneys in the morning." Isaak Walton "BACKLASH is entirely responsible for the degree of interest I have in hunting and fishing." Oscar Wilde About the Author An attorney, Galen Winter lived in Latin America and, for fifteen years, specialized in international law. He became a corporation counsel in Milwaukee, then in Chicago and, finally, engaged in the private practice of law in northern Wisconsin where, he says, "A man can associate with dogs and shotguns without arousing too much suspicion." Winter began writing about his passions - hunting and fishing - in 1981, contributing many articles to several national and regional outdoor magazines. He compiled a wild game cookbook, and wrote two novels. BACKLASH is one of his six volumes of outdoor humor. Winter has hunted and fished all over the western hemisphere - in arctic islands north of Canada's Nunavut Territory, in the Amazon basin, Cuba, Ecuador, Nicaragua, the Argentine Patagonia, Uruguay and various places within the United States where game birds are found. Poised for Harvest, Braced for Backlash by Timothy Miller Book Resume:

What are the true implications of the Holy Spirit backing up the gospel with power? What if you only had a short amount of time to train new disciples due to an outbreak of persecution? What would you need to deposit in a first round of disciples in order to catalyze a rapidly-expanding, New Testament-caliber movement whose adherents stay faithful to Jesus through trials and opposition? Drawing on his experiences in the Muslim world and other ministry contexts, Tim Miller examines these questions and more in Poised for Harvest, Braced for Backlash. "This book presents a strategy of mission that is far from new-it simply goes back to the model gleaned from the New Testament. I earnestly desire that my students lay hold of what Tim Miller is communicating in this book. Kenneth Krause, Director, Bethany College of Missions "Inspiring, a fresh look at modern missionary approaches in the context of catalytic church planting movements. Written from thoughtful reflection and passionate practice." Daniel Lim, Chief Executive Officer, IHOP Missions Base "This book is explosive, born not out of theory but by the Spirit and practice. If you truly want to make disciples of all nations as Jesus commanded, this book is a must read." Jaeson Ma, Founder, Campus Church Networks "Tim Miller has described an approach to mission among resistant people that I believe is biblical, effective, and sensitive to the cultural context. It often sounds like the book of Acts." Paul Pierson, Dean Emeritus, School of Intercultural Studies, Fuller Theological Seminary Timothy Miller has served as a church planter in various contexts and on staff at the International House of Prayer in Kansas City. He and his family continue to serve Jesus among the nations, and have a passion for the convergence of prayer, missions, and business.

Multiculturalism Backlash

Multiculturalism Backlash by Professor of Transnational Anthropology Steven Vertovec,Steven Vertovec,Susanne Wessendorf Book Resume:

In a relatively short time, many European governments have been purposefully dropping the notion ‘multicultural’ or other references to cultural diversity in their policy vocabularies. More and more politicians and public intellectuals have criticized a perceived shift towards ‘too much diversity’. This volume goes beyond the conventional approaches to the topic offering a careful examination of not only the social conditions and political questions surrounding multiculturalism but also the recent emergence of a ‘backlash’ against multicultural initiatives, programmes and infrastructures. Featuring case-study based contributions from leading experts throughout Europe and North America, this multidisciplinary work seeks to assess some of these key questions with reference to recent and current trends concerning multiculturalism, cultural diversity and integration in their respective countries, evaluating questions such as Is there is a common ‘sceptical turn’ against cultural diversity or a ‘backlash against difference’ sweeping Europe? How have public discourses impacted upon national and local diversity management and migration policies? Are the discourses and policy shifts actually reflected in everyday practices within culturally, linguistically and religiously diverse settings? The Multiculturalism Backlash provides new insights, informed reflections and comparative analyses concerning these significant processes surrounding politics, policy, public debates and the place of migrants and ethnic minorities within European societies today. Focusing on the practice and policy of multiculturalism from a comparative perspective this work will be of interest to scholars from a wide range of disciplines including migration, anthropology and sociology.
