The Clocks Are Telling Lies by Book Resume:

Until the nineteenth century all time was local time. On foot or on horseback, it was impossible to travel fast enough to care that noon was a few minutes earlier or later from one town to the next. The invention of railways and telegraphs, however, created a newly interconnected world where suddenly the time differences between cities mattered. The Clocks Are Telling Lies is an exploration of why we tell time the way we do, demonstrating that organizing a new global time system was no simple task. Standard time, envisioned by railway engineers such as Sandford Fleming, clashed with universal time, promoted by astronomers. When both sides met in 1884 at the International Meridian Conference in Washington, DC, to debate the best way to organize time, disagreement abounded. If scientific and engineering experts could not agree, how would the public? Following some of the key players in the debate, Scott Johnston reveals how people dealt with the contradictions in global timekeeping in surprising ways – from zealots like Charles Piazzi Smyth, who campaigned for the Great Pyramid to serve as the prime meridian, to Maria Belville, who sold the time door to door in Victorian London, to Moraviantown and other Indigenous communities that used timekeeping to fight for autonomy. Drawing from a wide range of primary sources, The Clocks Are Telling Lies offers a thought-provoking narrative that centres people and politics, rather than technology, in the vibrant story of global time telling.

Tell Me Lies by Carola Lovering Book Resume:

Soon to be an original series on Hulu! “A twisted modern love story” (Parade), Tell Me Lies is a sexy, thrilling novel about that one person who still haunts you—the other one. The wrong one. The one you couldn’t let go of. The one you’ll never forget. Lucy Albright is far from her Long Island upbringing when she arrives on the campus of her small California college and happy to be hundreds of miles from her mother—whom she’s never forgiven for an act of betrayal in her early teen years. Quickly grasping at her fresh start, Lucy embraces college life and all it has to offer. And then she meets Stephen DeMarco. Charming. Attractive. Complicated. Devastating. Confident and cocksure, Stephen sees something in Lucy that no one else has, and she’s quickly seduced by this vision of herself, and the sense of possibility that his attention brings her. Meanwhile, Stephen is determined to forget an incident buried in his past that, if exposed, could ruin him, and his single-minded drive for success extends to winning, and keeping, Lucy’s heart. Lucy knows there’s something about Stephen that isn’t to be trusted. Stephen knows Lucy can’t tear herself away. And their addicting entanglement will have consequences they never could have imagined. Alternating between Lucy’s and Stephen’s voices, Tell Me Lies follows their connection through college and post-college life in New York City. “Readers will be enraptured” (Booklist) by the “unforgettable beauties in this very sexy story” (Kirkus Review). With the psychological insight and biting wit of Luckiest Girl Alive, and the yearning ambitions and desires of Sweetbitter, this keenly intelligent and supremely resonant novel chronicles the exhilaration and dilemmas of young adulthood and the difficulty of letting go—even when you know you should.

‘I Know Who Caused COVID-19’ by Zhou Xun,Sander L. Gilman Book Resume:

A timely exploration of the global explosion in xenophobia during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through a close analysis of four cases from around the world, this book explores prejudice toward groups who are thought to have caused and spread COVID-19: the residents of Wuhan and Black African communities in China; ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities in the United States, United Kingdom, and Israel; African-Americans in the United States and Black/Asian/mixed ethnic communities in the United Kingdom; and White right-wing groups in the United States and Europe. The authors examine stereotyping and the false attribution of blame towards these groups, as well as what happens when a collective is actually at fault, and how the community deals with these conflicting issues. This is a timely, cogent examination of the blame and xenophobia that have been brought to the surface by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Telling Lies About the Wolves by Ramfis S. Firethorn Book Resume:

Telling Lies About the Wolves is a collection of fourteen short stories by Mason Powell, some of them previously unpublished, most previously uncollected. Those who know the work of Mason Powell primarily from his intense and often frightening novel The Brig may be surprised at this collection of his early, literary, tales. While they primarily deal with Gay characters, their insights about the human condition reach across the boundaries by which humanity too frequently catagorizes itself into us and them, and reveal eternal truths (some of them not very pretty, but nonetheless true) such as are at the heart of all good fiction. There are homoerotic moments, to be sure, but they are handled with a restraint and delicacy which one might not expect from this author. The great surprise of this collection is the variety of the stories. Next to cynicism there is sentiment. Next to the grimly realistic, there is the heroic, which usually emerges in us ordinary mortals only in the most extraordianry circumstances. In some places the author achieves a kind of mystical bond with the reader which can be downright alarming. And there is humor, sometimes subtle, sometimes slapstick; never a thing one associates with a writer most famed for erotica. The short story, as a form, has been out of favor for a while. With the shortened attention span of the average person these days, and art of all kinds coming in bytes rather than banquets, it might very well be that the time for a revival of short reading has come. If so, Mr. Powell1s collection comes at a most welcome juncture. If you have never read any fiction about Gay people, this might be a good place to start. If you have, and your tastes are sharpened, you may find this a feast of many courses. --Olin T. Fredegar

The Cosmic Lady Was Right by Marshall Motz Book Resume:

No ordinary memoir, this book aspires to be more than a mere exercise in narcissism. A street person in a zany California beach town at the end of the author's days provides the theme: planet Earth is the Galaxy Lunatic Training Asylum upon which each of us has been planted with one purpose, namely to rise from the stupidity and the darkness around us into the light, to regain in fact our sanity. Mama Earth is really tired of it all, the Lady opines, and recommends a journey inward. Taking a literary look back at his life, he sees she was right. In a series of poignant vignettes, it becomes clear that he and the whole country have been progressively descending into hopeless lunacy. Ah but theres more; there's an agend here. It seems its all been a macho ego trip---the whole of human history in fact---an unfortunate male mistake, a mere prelude to the new paradigm, the return of the goddess---meaning the spiritual androgyny that Jesus talks about in the Gospel of Thomas. We need to restore the balance between male and female. In a hilarious final chapter set in the aforementioned California city, it all comes together: Mama Earth, the Goddess Sophia and the Cosmic Lady, who is vindicated in an eschatological grand finale. She was right all along.

A Journey to Seeking God, Real or Myth? by Florence Gaspar Muzi Book Resume:

A true story and now a speaker of God’s love and his empowerment bringing one around not only to the love of God but to work towards the image of his son in obedience and love of the Father, the goal is to love one another as he so love’s us, yes, sometimes difficult. I sit here in my little Eden – my backyard, I hear the mockingbird serenading in the background a gift from nature and God who has put joy back into my life and love. I comfortably write these words from witness of my children and myself; it is my hope that everyone that reads and witnesses God’s supernatural will share it with another and another and another; that we will speak freely the full story of witness. Perhaps the atheists who believe they can do it alone and in their last moments of life call for a priest, suddenly there not sure God is real and there. A change of heart is different from a change of mind – – think.

Artful Immorality – Variants of Cynicism by Daniel Scott Mayfield Book Resume:

When a term is overused, it tends to fall out of fashion. Cynicism seems to be an exception. Its polytropic versatility apparently prevents any discontinuation of its application. Everyone knows that cynicism denotes that which is deemed deleterious at a given time; and every time will specify its toxicities – the apparent result being the term’s non-specificity. This study describes the cynical stance and statement so as to render the term’s use scholarly expedient.Close readings of textual sources commonly deemed cynical provide a legible starting point. A rhetorical analysis of aphorisms ascribed to the arch-Cynic Diogenes facilitates describing the design of cynical statements, as well as the characteristic features of the cynical stance. These patterns are identifiable in later texts generally labeled cynical – above all in Machiavelli’s Principe. With recourse to the Diogenical archetype, cynicism is likewise rendered describable in Gracián’s Oráculo manual, Diderot’s Le neveu de Rameau, and Nietzsche’s Posthumous Fragments. This study’s description of cynicism provides a phenomenon otherwise considered amorphous with distinct contours, renders transparent its workings, and tenders a dependable basis for further analyses.

Lying Up a Storm by Julia Cook Book Resume:

A storm is brewing... Whenever Levi doesn't like the truth, he kinda, sorta makes up other stuff to say. One day his mother explains to him that telling lies will damage the trust of his friends and make him very sad. Whenever you tell a lie, your inside sun goes away. Then a lying cloud forms, and glooms up your day. Each time you tell a lie, another cloud starts to form, and before you can stop it from happening, your insides start to storm. This book is a great resource to help children understand not only the consequences of telling a lie, but also how one lie can often lead to telling several more. It will help parents and teachers understand that lying can be a normal and sometimes healthy response for a child and offers tools to help guide children toward truthfulness.

Lying in Early Modern English Culture by Andrew Hadfield Book Resume:

Lying in Early Modern English Culture is a major study of ideas of truth and falsehood in early modern England from the advent of the Reformation to the aftermath of the failed Gunpowder Plot. The period is characterised by panic and chaos when few had any idea how religious, cultural, and social life would develop after the traumatic division of Christendom. While many saw the need for a secular power to define the truth others declared that their allegiances belonged elsewhere. Accordingly there was a constant battle between competing authorities for the right to declare what was the truth and so label opponents as liars. Issues of truth and lying were, therefore, a constant feature of everyday life and determined ideas of individual identity, politics, speech, sex, marriage, and social behaviour, as well as philosophy and religion. This book is a cultural history of truth and lying from the 1530s to the 1610s, showing how lying needs to be understood in action as well as in theory. Unlike most histories of lying, it concentrates on a series of particular events reading them in terms of academic theories and more popular notions of lying. The book covers a wide range of material such as the trials of Ann Boleyn and Thomas More, the divorce of Frances Howard, and the murder of Anthony James by Annis and George Dell; works of literature such as Othello, The Faerie Queene, A Mirror for Magistrates, and The Unfortunate Traveller; works of popular culture such as the herring pamphlet of 1597; and major writings by Castiglione, Montaigne, Erasmus, Luther, and Tyndale.

Mathematical Circle Diaries, Year 2: Complete Curriculum for Grades 6 to 8 by Anna Burago Book Resume:

Mathematical circles, with their question-driven approach and emphasis on problem solving, expose students to the type of mathematics that stimulates the development of logical thinking, creativity, analytical abilities, and mathematical reasoning. These skills, while scarcely introduced at school, are in high demand in the modern world. This book, a sequel to Mathematical Circle Diaries, Year 1, teaches how to think and solve problems in mathematics. The material, distributed among twenty-nine weekly lessons, includes detailed lectures and discussions, sets of problems with solutions, and contests and games. In addition, the book shares some of the know-how of running a mathematical circle. The book covers a broad range of problem-solving strategies and proofing techniques, as well as some more advanced topics that go beyond the limits of a school curriculum. The topics include invariants, proofs by contradiction, the Pigeonhole principle, proofs by coloring, double counting, combinatorics, binary numbers, graph theory, divisibility and remainders, logic, and many others. When students take science and computing classes in high school and college, they will be better prepared for both the foundations and advanced material. The book contains everything that is needed to run a successful mathematical circle for a full year. This book, written by an author actively involved in teaching mathematical circles for fifteen years, is intended for teachers, math coaches, parents, and math enthusiasts who are interested in teaching math that promotes critical thinking. Motivated students can work through this book on their own. In the interest of fostering a greater awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and everyday life, MSRI and the AMS are publishing books in the Mathematical Circles Library series as a service to young people, their parents and teachers, and the mathematics profession.

By the time she was in her early twenties, Bassey was a spoken word artist and traveling with HBO's Def Poetry Jam, channeling her life into art. But beneath the façade of the confident performer, Bassey's mental health was in a precipitous decline, culminating in a breakdown that resulted in hospitalization and a diagnosis of Bipolar II. In I'm Telling the Truth, But I'm Lying, Bassey Ikpi breaks open our understanding of mental health by giving us intimate access to her own. Exploring shame, confusion, medication, and family in the process, Bassey looks at how mental health impacts every aspect of our lives—how we appear to others, and more importantly to ourselves—and challenges our preconception about what it means to be "normal." Viscerally raw and honest, the result is an exploration of the stories we tell ourselves to make sense of who we are—and the ways, as honest as we try to be, each of these stories can also be a lie.

Now a grown woman eleven years later, she and Yappy, the artificial intelligence for the colony, work as a team to keep the place humming smoothly. Except that Wanita may be a mass murderer with Yappy’s help; she isn’t sure. Hele, living in a mansion in a big city, enjoys the comfort of her certainty and wealth; as she says, “I couldn’t kill them. I’m not a monster.” Wait, what? “Sometimes people, sometimes even places, aren’t always what they seem,” says Yappy to Wanita. The mystery unfolds without a detective to unravel clues. Everything means something, maybe just not what you think. Good guys are bad; bad guys are good. Rather than solving a murder, the murders aid in solving the mystery. Foreword by Actress Kim Coles. The U.S. boasts the highest divorce rate of any country in the world and some of the highest relationship dissatisfaction rates. Yet, despite the endless amounts of advice and experts available to us, we continue to experience increasing levels of frustration, conflict, emotional breakdown, and failure in our relationships. What are we missing? What continues to elude us? What is inherently wrong with our understanding of what makes love relationships work? Debrena Jackson Gandy, two-time national best-selling author and founder of The Love Academy addresses these questions and the root causes of this massive breakdown in relationships in our country. Most of the advice and models given to American women only address the symptoms of this epidemic, usually applying simplified how-to techniques that tend to lead to more confusion than resolution. These are band-aids, and ineffective ones at that. The Love Lies delves deeper to unearth ten toxic beliefs that have been instilled in women since pre-school, influencing us through a wide range of ages and trapping us all in a web of illusions. These powerful "Love Lies" manipulate perceptions, create delusions and perpetuate behaviors that unknowingly sabotage our relationships. The Love Lies sets women free from chronic cycles of dissatisfaction and disappointment and offers a proven process to dismantle the lies, heal the mind and heart, and transform the American relationship paradigm forever.

Father James Ennis’s life is fulfilling enough. He’s content to tend to the concerns of his aging parishioners at St. Patrick—including the Brennans, whom he suspects are being swindled—and be a loving, if remote, uncle to his sister Lizzie’s two children. There’s also the matter of coping with the growing insistence of the sinister, unseen presence that has inhabited his life for two decades now. Twenty-seven-year-old Emily Bell is desperate to fit into the rarefied world of her colleagues at the Manhattan auction house where she works. When a weekend jaunt to Newport, Rhode Island, ends in pain and humiliation, it’s too much to bear. On a hot, sticky summer night, Father Ennis gets a phone call that upends more than the routine of his days. It brings Jim and Emily together, marking the start of a friendship between savior and saved that will change them both forever. It also marks the beginning of a battle against evils both ordinary and supernatural. Alive with memorable characters, Ryan’s finely crafted novel explores the ability of love to forge bonds of friendship, to mend broken places, and to summon the courage to face even the most daunting darkness.
